This luxurious and private suite is designed to suit all travelers but especially notable for birders and nature enthusiast.
The Birds Nest room includes full bath, queen size bed, comfy sitting area and storage. With it's own private entrance separate from the main house, this room offers the utmost in privacy. The room is attached by a large common area to a well appointed 4 bedroom home remodeled in 2006. The home has hardwood and satillo tile floors, 3 gorgeous patios, large open windows and beautiful details.
We have two other bedrooms in the house and still off of this master patio, please ask if you have a large party.
The common area has everything you could possible need for a long or short stay including a fridge and kitchen cupboard for food storage, coffee and tea service, toaster, Forman's grill and more. An ample continental breakfast and other goodies are provided daily.
Located in the heart of the McAllen, this full acre property is surrounded by a brick fence making it a lovely oasis in the city.
We are birders and our neighborhood is often on the birding festival tours with lots of mature trees and natural habitat. We have a bird condo on the property (essentially a dead palm with holes bored out for birds' nests) that houses innumerable bird species including -- swear it -- a pair of Red-crowned Parrots (seasonal), not Parakeets. Birders need not venture far to get life lists. My official Backyard Bird Count currently stands at over 30 different species; some of which are South Texas specialities like Green Parakeets, Kiskadee, and Chachalaca.
We have a 3" Celestron Telescope that we are happy to share with guest for some close up birding and if you are lucky and we get clear skies, we might be able to do some deep sky observing.
Birding festivals are ongoing here; South Texas is the New Birding Mecca. With massive migratory periods. We also have butterfly and dragonfly festivals throughout the year, plus The World Birding Center with excellently managed nature centers too numerous to list. Your host knows them all.
Winter is simply stunning here! McAllen is close to South Padre Island, for excellent fishing, kite boarding and more. Many well known ranches in South Texas offer private day trips for phtographers. Our area is a vibrant, growing metro with access to many activities and shopping galore.
Don't waste your time looking anywhere else, this is THE PLACE you want to be!
Your host is a blogger, The Urban Birder, for the McAllen Convention and Visitor's Bureau. You can read about my exploits in urban birding on my (email hidden), (website hidden) at UrbanBirderMcAllen, and on (website hidden) at UrbanBirderST, (website hidden) + Urban Birder

Smoking is allowed outside. We do have A friendly dog, she is an outdoor dog.
We are generally very liberal and basically have no hard and fast rules -- if in doubt, ask.
If it is growing season we will have a small vegetable garden and you are welcome to pitch in and/or enjoy the area. If you work the garden, we can arrange some fresh vegges as payment.
Texas, oh Texas! We have an official Backyard Bird Count of about 30 species. What more could you possibly need?
Warm welcome by Rhonda with a tour of the space for our use. A refreshing cucumber-lime blender drink was left for us in the refrigerator. The one-acre property is a birder's joy. Before we even unloaded our car, we sat on the back patio and spotted 3 birds new to us: Great Kiskadee, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Chachalaca. Most days we took advantage of the patio at some point to enjoy the birds and the yard.
Before we arrived, Rhonda checked w/us to find out the types of foods we preferred for breakfast. The provisions were laid out and the refrigerator stocked with options the night before by our host. This way, we could have breakfast at our leisure before we took off on our daily birding adventures.
Much of the communication w/our host was done by texting as we were out and about. The hosts were sensitive to giving us space as needed. Our conversations w/them were warm and interesting. Rhonda provided us w/information on several local restaurants that she thought we would appreciate and kept us apprised of the crazy weather threats that TX was experiencing during our stay.
There were many nice extra touches such as refreshing drinks in the afternoon, tea and cookies, suggestions for what to do on a rainy day, making space for us to pull our car under shelter when hail was threatening, letting us use their microwave to heat leftovers, and more.
We especially recommend this place for birders and would stay here again.
We had a fantastic time at the Birding Metropolis! Rhonda and Oscar are perfect hosts, taking care of every detail for a relaxing and rewarding experience. The breakfast was just what we wanted, fresh and healthy. Very quiet neighborhood, yet close to many restaurants that Rhonda had recommended, (which were also excellent choices!). Both hosts were knowledgeable of the local birds and where to find them. The cozy and comfortable room was off the main house with it's own entrance and had everything we needed. I would highly recommend this booking for anyone staying in the Rio Grande Valley for birding or any other reason! I would be remiss not to mention Maddy the dog who greeted us with such enthusiasm at the beginning and end of each day!
My stay with Rhonda was as relaxing and enjoyable as I expected it to be. This was my second stay with her, and I will be back for more in the future! Her easygoing hospitality is just right for the visitor who is looking for either privacy or friendly conversation and local suggestions. The suite is quiet, comfortable, and I loved sitting on the back porch as my 'office away from home.' Rhonda's happy to stock what you want for breakfast, and there are always a few extras to enjoy as well for snacking. Highly recommended!
Oscar and Rhonda are fantastic hosts. Their home and property is lovely and both were more than accommodating and kind.
The room is well appointed and fit our needs in every way.
They were especially sweet with my 5 year old and even went as far as quickly mailing back the favorite stuffed animal he had accidentally left behind!
My only hope is that we are able to visit again in the spring and fall to check out the beautiful birds that make this destination their seasonal home!
You could not ask for better hosts! Their knowledge of birds, world birding sites and sharing some of their personal photos made it a very special trip. I had a health issue whilst I was visiting and Rhonda was able to connect me with a doctor right away. She saved the day! The outside patio area and the swing in their backyard were very welcoming places to return to after a long day of birding. If you are a birder, this is a 'must stay' place. We hope to return there next year!
I have nothing but good things to say about my stay. Way better than staying at a hotel, and my hosts, Rhonda and Oscar, are great people, very friendly and accommodating.
