The Space

This luxurious and private suite is designed to suit all travelers but especially notable for birders and nature enthusiast.

The Birds Nest room includes full bath, queen size bed, comfy sitting area and storage. With it's own private entrance separate from the main house, this room offers the utmost in privacy. The room is attached by a large common area to a well appointed 4 bedroom home remodeled in 2006. The home has hardwood and satillo tile floors, 3 gorgeous patios, large open windows and beautiful details.

We have two other bedrooms in the house and still off of this master patio, please ask if you have a large party.

The common area has everything you could possible need for a long or short stay including a fridge and kitchen cupboard for food storage, coffee and tea service, toaster, Forman's grill and more. An ample continental breakfast and other goodies are provided daily.

Located in the heart of the McAllen, this full acre property is surrounded by a brick fence making it a lovely oasis in the city.

We are birders and our neighborhood is often on the birding festival tours with lots of mature trees and natural habitat. We have a bird condo on the property (essentially a dead palm with holes bored out for birds' nests) that houses innumerable bird species including -- swear it -- a pair of Red-crowned Parrots (seasonal), not Parakeets. Birders need not venture far to get life lists. My official Backyard Bird Count currently stands at over 30 different species; some of which are South Texas specialities like Green Parakeets, Kiskadee, and Chachalaca.

We have a 3" Celestron Telescope that we are happy to share with guest for some close up birding and if you are lucky and we get clear skies, we might be able to do some deep sky observing.

Birding festivals are ongoing here; South Texas is the New Birding Mecca. With massive migratory periods. We also have butterfly and dragonfly festivals throughout the year, plus The World Birding Center with excellently managed nature centers too numerous to list. Your host knows them all.

Winter is simply stunning here! McAllen is close to South Padre Island, for excellent fishing, kite boarding and more. Many well known ranches in South Texas offer private day trips for phtographers. Our area is a vibrant, growing metro with access to many activities and shopping galore.

Don't waste your time looking anywhere else, this is THE PLACE you want to be!

  • You could not ask for better hosts! Their knowledge of birds, world birding sites and sharing some of their personal photos made it a very special trip. I had a health issue whilst I was visiting and Rhonda was able to connect me with a doctor right away. She saved the day! The outside patio area and the swing in their backyard were very welcoming places to return to after a long day of birding. If you are a birder, this is a 'must stay' place. We hope to return there next year!

  • I have nothing but good things to say about my stay. Way better than staying at a hotel, and my hosts, Rhonda and Oscar, are great people, very friendly and accommodating.

  • We finally are back in Alaska after a month long trek though several states. An outstanding highlight of the trip was the chance to spend a few days at Rhonda and Oscar Gomez's Luxury Birding Suite in McAllen,Texas on our first visit to the Lower Rio Grand Valley. What a delightful place. Unfortunately Rhonda could not be there at the time of our visit, but Oscar was the perfect host in making our stay there most memorable. The accommodations provided privacy yet were convenient for coming and going or just birding on the grounds that provided excellent onsite birding opportunities, Oscar also was extremely helpful in directing us to many nearby State Parks and other birding sites in the region. Another highlight was Oscar sharing with us photos he and Rhonda took last spring during a fallout of neo-tropical migrants at South Padre Island. They must have taken excellent photos of 15 or 20 different warblers in addition to many other passerine migrants during the fallout. A collection of outstanding photos! We enjoyed our stay in McAllen very much and hope to have a chance to go back soon.

  • Rhonda and her husband will help you feel welcome at the Bird's Nest. My friend and I stayed in the nest for 6 nights and were delighted with our stay. Breakfast was perfect.....fast....and well balanced. One morning we hired a guide and Rhonda made sure that we had plenty of food to take with us on our early morning. While rain and cold weather prevailed......Rhonda and her husband were great for our spirits! After a couple of cold days, we had extra rain coats, jackets, and hats hung out for us to use! We stayed warm and dry thanks to Rhonda. Thanks for making this a great location to bird!

  • Nice room, friendly, helpful hosts, cuddly dogs, great yardbirds! Rhonda and Oscar helped us find nice restaurants, advised us on where the rare bird was, all in all bent over backwards to make our stay as good as possible. We took great videos of the Green Parakeets and Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks as they checked out the nesting condo. The Yellow-Crested Night Herons nesting in the tree in the next yard were a bonus.

  • We were extremely satisfied with our stay at this centrally located and well equipped home. Our hosts were most accommodating to our needs and requests. We could fix our ample continental breakfast as early as we wanted and come back from a day of birding to snacks and refreshments. Best of all we had green parakeet and red fronted parrot right in the yard.
