Chicago Skyline, German Hospitality

Apartment - Entire home/apt · E Erie St, Chicago, IL 60611, United States

The Space

This 750 square foot, 33rd floor, one bedroom apartment nestles itself up against a backdrop of splendor: floor to ceiling windows showcase the dazzling downtown high-rise architecture with a sliver of sparkling blue Lake Michigan peering at the end of the canal-like busy city streets below.

The apartment is simple and casual-comfy. The kitchen has a breakfast bar, brand new stove and oven, microwave, refrigerator... The hallways has a lot of closet space. The bathroom is sparkling clean with a shower/tub and vanity. The bedroom is closed off by a door (this is not a loft, the ceilings go all the way up for privacy between rooms); a brand new wood and leather sleigh bed adorned with designer silk duvet cover and Tommy Hilfiger sheets is the only furniture in the spacious room other than a beautiful wood dresser from Bloomingdales that allows guests to stow their belongings in safely and conveniently. The walk-in closet has a washer/dryer for your use and hangers as well. The building has 24/7 doormen and security cameras, entry-access by keys and fobs only. There is a beautiful and spotless gym on the 40th floor that overlooks the Tribune building among other things, right next door to the gym is the ENORMOUS rooftop deck overlooking the loop and west side of the city. It is breathtaking at night and at sunrise. It has grills for public grilling and lounge chairs for sun bathing.

There is a very popular bistro in the building as well as package delivery and a dry cleaners for your convenience.

We are walking distance to the city's best shopping, bars and transportation is a snap.

Parking is tricky downtown but it can be arranged in advance for an additional daily fee.

Your host is a wonderful, quirky German-born man nearing his silver years, named Ralf. He operates the bistro downstairs/in the building and was once an internationally recognized model. No joke. He has been in America over half his life now and in Chicago since the 1970's. He knows EVERYONE in the Windy City, and they know him!!! He is an excellent person to hook you up with passes into the city's best nightclubs, restaurants and jazz clubs. His stories of the old days are HYSTERICAL and his disposition, though seemingly abrupt at first is very genuine and good-hearted. He is well-liked and very memorable. ***This description is written by a woman who was his partner in life for ten years and though not romantically with him anymore, still loves him deeply, like the family that he is... and is his next door neighbor! It is a very unusual situation but very endearing once you meet us. :)

  • Location, location, location… the place is perfectly situated, 2B from magnificent mile. Thank you to Erin and Ralf. Very friendly and very accommodating
This was my first experience with airbnb and I was really impressed how easy it was to set up things. I have to say that Erin provided all the information needed by emails and texts and was answering promptly and efficiently my questions and requests . The condo was absolutely clean which is crucial in OC type of person (me). Ralf was very nice and also very helpful. I had a very busy weak in Chicago and being in such good conditions impacted positively my stay.
I would definitely recommend this place for anyone seeking either vacation or work in Chicago
Thanks again to Erin and Ralf

  • Yes, the location of the condo was perfect and yes, the condo was perfect itself as it is shown in the photos without any bad surprises. However, you should rent this place just to meet Erin.. Besides being a good host, she is a type of person whom you would like to keep in your life as a friend forever..she is a fun, energetic and gorgeous lady with outstanding voice and stage performance.. Briefly, even if Erin rents a place in the middle of nowhere, i am in..

  • Wonderful property! This condo was immaculate upon arrival and well kept. The kitchen had eating utensils and cookware making it very convenient to have some meals at home. It had a dish washer making clean-up super easy. The unit was also equipped with a washer and dryer, which we felt was a bonus. The view from the living room was stunning!

This property was perfectly situated for us; walking distance from navy pier, mag mile and wonderful restaurants.

Erin and Ralf were great hosts. Although we did not have the chance to meet Erin, she ensured we were well taken care of. Ralf, thank you for having drinks with us at Bijan’s. It was wonderful getting to know you and hearing your AMAZING stories! We will definitely be in touch the next time we are in Chicago :-)

  • You cannot do better when traveling to Chicago for business, shopping, or any sort of getaway of the family or romantic kind. I am in Chicago for business often and know many locals. I must say that Erin and Ralf, and their approach to the art of being hosts, are beyond compare. If you want to be left alone to do whatever you thought you wanted to come to Chicago for, I'm sure both Erin and Ralf would oblige. They are both quite cognizant of your space and right to privacy. However, if you are interested in seeing Chicago from either or both of their eyes and perspective, they will be happy to point you in the direction of your life. They are like very few Chgicagoans I have ever encountered, if any. I was fortunate to have a tour of Erin's other AIRBNB listings at the same location. No matter which one you chose, you will not be sorry. Erin has a flair for style and a longing to make her guests feel at home. If you get a chance to see one of Erin's vocal performances (which I HIGHLY recommend), you will be amazed that someone with such talent can be such an other oriented person in her dealings with her guests. The Bistro Ralf manages is not only flush with a classy and comfortable atmosphere but serves excellent cuisine as well (try the calamari). You should try to make at least one stop there part of your plans. If Ralf is there when you go, and I suggest you try to work that out, he will make sure your experience there equals that of your time as a guest in his home. Be good to these people. They will certainly be good to you.

  • Erin was very accommodating, and friendly host. The place was in great condition, spare towels, a bottle of wine by the bed, very clean. All in all an excellent experience. I'd stay there again.

  • This was a beautiful apartment and exactly as advertised. Ralf and Erin were very helpful with check in, and left helpful notes and guides for our use. They also left a bottle of wine (though we were in town for a wedding and didn't have a chance to crack it open!), which was a nice gesture.

The view was great, and the location is unbeatable in Chicago. Definitely would recommend.

  • Our stay in Chicago was fantastic! Ralf and Erin are great hosts. The apartment is close to everything - we walked or took the L everywhere. The Bistro downstairs is a great late night spot and the view from the rooftop (and inside the apartment) is amazing. We hope to come back one day!

  • The apartment was exactly as advertised and Erin and Ralf were extremely easy to deal with. You could not fault the location and some great restaurants nearby. We would definitely stay again if we are lucky enough to visit Chicago in the future. Great City.

  • Great location! Erin and Ralph were very friendly, responsive to texts and emails. The place is so cosy, comfortable and warmful. I'd definitely stay here again and do recommend it to visitors to Chicago. Thank you so much. Our stay in Chicago - and in Erin's apt - was awesome !

About
Hi, I'm a Chicago-based professional jazz musician with several albums out and a really gorgeous condo that is super-expensive to live in. Hello, airbnb! I'm an excellent hostess and have dozens of testimonials on this site to back up that claim, so, please make your stay in Chicago with me and make a new friend in the process? Random tid-bits: I love great wines, particularly full-bodied red wines. And I love to share a great bottle with someone who has great insight to share. I love thunderstorms and snowstorms-- I guess because they can mirror the tempestuous soul. I detest smoke and find drug-use a huge turn-off; it just depresses me. Neither are acceptable in my home or propinquity. Can't cook. Won't try. Great at ordering take-out, though. Hate the sound of clashing silverware. Love children more than anything (!!!!) but I don't have a child-friendly condo. Would rather have terminal cancer than a broken heart. Jazz snob-- no, I don't think Norah Jones is a jazz singer, stop asking me to sing her stupid songs. (Sorry) You will hear plenty of Chet Baker, Monk, Anita O'Day, Ben Webster, Cannonball Adderly, Wes Montgomery, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson... you catch the drift, I'm a jazz-baby. Love lots of genres of music (Blues, Celtic, Classical, folk, Middle Eastern, French cabaret, classic rock...) but really cannot tolerate rap or the current definition of R&B/soul. Most pop past the 90's sucks. (LOL... I am so making enemies here...) I have more *friends* (not acquaintances-- FRIENDS) than anyone you may ever meet! Literally. It's a blessing. My loyalty is deep and wide to people who are heartfelt and kind. ;) Often, I like to have a few people over for wine, cheese, political discussions, chats about matters of the heart... Quiet company time is a favorite past time of mine. I prefer the city-scape to the prairie. I love a full moon. I wear stilettos like an infant wears diapers- ALWAYS. ;-)) I love poetry and people who live poetic lives. I am hopeless with most technology and miss things like phones with buttons. My iphone is an irritation to me more than a beloved treasure. People say I was born in the wrong era. I agree. Nothing better than a person with a quick and unique sense of humor and a compassionate, fearless heart. People show their true character when they think no one is looking. Sports bars have taken over America. That isn't a good thing. There's nothing sexier than humility. I'd rather be trusting and mistaken than safely pessimistic. If you can make grilled cheese you might as well be Charlie Trotter in my world. Good parents are my favorite people. Fashion is an expression of personality, but real beauty comes from within. I am intolerant of intolerance. Racism is the most disgusting characteristic of man. I like to box with my trainer in my pink boxing gloves, yet I was a ballet dancer more than half my life. I'm allergic to most animals. It's ridiculous how bad my allergies are. So the cruel irony is I love animals but I avoid them like the plague or I'm sick for days. Strangers on airplanes usually become friends with me-- or hate it when I fall asleep on their shoulder as they try to read... or sit comfortably in their own space. (LOL) A goal is to learn several languages. Old people make my heart melt, and I often want to snuggle them like grandparents. The lineage of history that dwells inside their eyes is a reminder to live a good, productive, grateful life. I prefer baths to showers and candlelight to sunlight. I think Reality TV is one of the country's biggest embarrassments and teachers should earn what basketball players make in a career. I'm in awe of people who can draw, paint, sculpt, sew, build things... I do not know the difference between a baseball and a football. (Kidding- but only slightly). If it's a choice between a tellurian wine bar/cafe OR the hot new stand-in-line for an hour nightclub?: Wine bar. Even if I have VIP passes, free drinks all night, celebrity hosts-- those "scenes" of pick up joints and crowded clubs make me disengaged. I prefer a half empty room at closing time with deep conversation. I have bouts of insomnia. But I typically write in those times. I like to clean and scrub the apartment-- it's cathartic. I like people who are thoughtful, witty, compassionate and honest. Clean and respectful is appreciated too. People with dreams are common. People that follow their dreams and sacrifice their comfort to pursue their deeper passions, with focused tenacity: they are the spice of life that inspires. You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat a waiter, a doorman, a busboy, a janitor and an assistant. Money doesn't buy class. Or good taste. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone is someone's child. Everyone has a gift. Music, at it's best, is a healer. One genuine smile can change a stranger's entire day. I'd rather be remembered as a loving person than an attractive one.
