Sweet 1930s Cottage (lake, woods)

House - Entire home/apt · Old Queechy Rd, Canaan, NY 12029, United States

The Space

Hark back to an earlier time, a quieter pace, far away yet close to everything!

Experience the beauty of the Berkshires at our little red cottage in the woods: 2BR (1-full main level, 1-queen upstairs), 1 full bath, sleeps 3 comfortably, 4 max.

Smallpeace Cottage boasts a newly renovated, modern country kitchen with a cheerful skylight that lets the sun stream in. The rest of the house retains its retro 1930s character, and sits on a hill above a quite road, offering privacy without being too remote. Old growth pines and a quaint old outhouse are also on the property.

Pretty mountain views and easy access to hiking trails, skiing, leaf peeping, and nearby Queechy Lake give vacationers plenty to do. Protected wetlands provide an ideal setting for birders and nature enthusiasts. For more info about local outdoor activities, check out the Columbia County Land Conservancy website.

Nestled at the base of the Taconics and a stone’s throw from the Berkshire County border, Smallpeace Cottage is an easy 15 - 45 minutes drive from, well, just about everything: Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, Apple picking, museums, wine tasting, outlet shopping, antiquing, and great restaurants.

Amenities include:

• Washer/Dryer
• Towels, linens, paper goods, kitchen condiments, cleaning supplies provided
• Dishwasher

*Note: Garden stairs up to the cottage, as well as a narrow, partially open stairway to the second-level bedroom may be a safety consideration for some. Potential renters with little ones should note that the house has not been child-proofed and cannot accommodate child gates.

CHECK IN/OUT times are flexible as long as they are compatible with our other reservations, and if communicated in advance. Please let us know your arrival and departure times (if known) when inquiring about the cottage.

Guest Access

Guests should make themselves at home by using linens, towels, books, music doc, and basic kitchen spices/condiments, but are expected to bring their own food and drink and respect all personal items set away in marked drawers and closets.

Interaction with Guests

We really appreciate knowing a bit about anyone who stays in our home, so an initial email or telephone conversation is important. On the occasions when we cannot be there to greet our guests in person, we appreciate a text or telephone call to say they arrived. We are generally quite available by telephone if there are ever questions or concerns.

The Neighborhood

Canaan is a picturesque town in upper Columbia County, New York, and nestled in the foothills of the Taconic Mountains. Queechy Lake is the jewel in the crown of this pretty community. The area feels quite rural, but is within 10 miles of several lovely towns, including Chatham, West Stockbridge, Lenox, MA, and New Lebanon. The town of Hudson is an easy 1/2 hour drive west on RT 295.

Getting around

Car services can be called in an emergency, but personal transportation is necessary. Closest train stations are in Hudson and Wassaic.

  • Michele's home is always a great place to stay! It was freezing outside, but very cozy indoors. We had a lovely weekend just relaxing, cooking and watching movies. We will definitely be back!

  • This is a delightful cottage for anyone who wants a quiet location. It is full of old world charm but is modern as well. Michele and Ber were easy to deal with and made sure that our stay was happy. They even left fresh milk in the fridge to get us off to a good start after a long journey.

Thank you for your feedback, Peter. We were happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. You and your family are welcome to come back anytime. We especially appreciated how very tidy you left the place!

  • Thinking about 1930 cottage and only one word comes to mind : perfect. We happened to stay in rediculously many places all over the wold not just in Berkshires. Lodging in different countries and cities as well as lodging in resorts and rural areas must be judged separetly as different genres of paintings, let us say, must be compared to its own kind. Yet, great work of art as well as great place to stay is obvious no matter size or style. Sweet 1930 cottage is a masterpiece. It is in the exceedingly rare bucolic location, yet perfectly situated to all Berkshires has to offer. Small but fantastically comfortable with minimal and tasteful furnishings and most generous cooking equipment.Copper pans? Sharp knives!! And much much more. It's a rarity that I would even look at books in rental places, becase its usually some trush owners decided to use as decorations. Here I even read a bit. I respect Michelle for making so many smart decisions, her taste and her style. We did not meet or even talked on the phone just exchanged messages., yet, with few words she made us feel at home and welcome. I know that she is Warm, intelligent and deliciously tasteful like the place she shared with us!

    Response from Michele:

One of the unexpected delights of renting our beloved cottage is the adventure of discovering just who finds his/her way to our door. Simply through texts and email exchanges, I quickly concluded that David and his wife must be interesting, interested life travelers. Considerate and complimentary, David seemed to enjoy Smallpeace for all that it is (a big plus in our eyes), and, by all accounts, took terrific care of the place. They are welcome to return anytime.

  • We found our stay at the cottage in a word, perfect. The house is well situated for Hudson, Lenox and Becket, which provides easy access to restaurants, Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, and theater. While it is in the woods and certainly quiet, it is not isolated by any means. There are farmer's markets nearby for shopping and a general store down the street. The house was very clean and had everything we needed to cook, listen to music or read.

It would be our first choice when returning to the area.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. Hope to see you again soon!

  • Michelle was an excellent host and very responsive to emails and texts. Her cabin was truly peaceful with every possible need thought about beforehand. The house is extremely well designed and the kitchen was delightful to cook in. The pictures don't do the upstairs loft justice because it was even more cozy and spacious in person. Thanks for having us over!

  • We really enjoyed our stay. Michelle was easy to communicate with and had great tips on what to see and do in the area. We loved the house and hope to visit again.

    October 2013
  • It's a sweet and lovely cottage, with great views all around, everything you need, private but not isolated--there's a cute rotary phone, but everything else is up to date! Michele put together a really helpful guidebook to hiking places, grocery stores, restaurants, etc. The nearby Queechy Lake is gorgeous. I hope to go back!

I'm a freelance writer and a publishing industry professional. I am also pursuing a graduate degree in creative writing. The handsome Irishman you see in this photo is my husband Ber. We divide our time between our shabby chic apartment in Queens and this cozy little cottage we call Smallpeace. Here in the country, we’ve learned to slow down, be more creative, cook incredible meals, nurture our spirits, and connect with nature. We invite like-minded people to do the same.
