About this listing

A small room in a great house in an interesting neighbourhood. Shared space with 3 girls, a guy, a dog and a cat! We took some time away from airbnb - but we're back and better than ever! (A new dishwasher goes a long way. You may also have seen references in our reviews to a rock to hold the bedroom door closed. Old houses shift and ill-fitting doors are just one of the quirks! Thankfully, a latch has now been installed so it's all good. )

The space

We are offering a private bedroom in a vibrant shared house in central Halifax. The house has a sunny south facing backyard, large family kitchen, living room and bathroom with a deep claw foot tub. All linens can be provided if you need them. Street parking is available and wireless internet is provided as well.

The house is located in the heart of Halifax, within 15 minutes walking distance of Citadel hill, the Halifax Metro Centre, Neptune theater, Alexander Keith’s brewery and shopping on Spring Garden Road. Walk towards the water and within 5 minutes you can be on the Halifax waterfront, breathing the sea air or visiting one of the many shops or restaurants in the Historic Properties area, including the Hart and Thistle Gastropub or Cow's Ice cream! Fifteen minutes in the other direction will take you to the historic Hydrostone area. If you are up for a 30 minute walk along the waterfront (or 10 minute drive) you will arrive at the Seaport farmer’s market and historic Pier 21.

Your hosts are a young professional couple, our room mate and our two dogs, a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Basset Hound, Hudson and Roy! The pups are Very loveable and won't go in your room unless you invite them in - how could you resist? Together we enjoy cooking using fresh, local ingredients. We are passionate about entertaining in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.

If you have any questions or are looking to stay longer than one or two nights please feel free to get in touch with me. Thanks!

Interaction with guests

My husband and I work full time but feel free to interact with us when we are around. If you have any questions, feel free to call/text or leave a question on the island in the kitchen - we'll see that right away!

Other things to note

This is a shared house with 2 univeristy students that may be on a different schedule and my husband and I or you as a guest. They are very quiet and respectful; however, please do not be alarmed if there are people coming and going! Feel free to ask for more detail on this if interested.

Also, there is a large Bernese Mountain Dog and a cat in the house. They are very docile and friendly but not especially cuddly. Sort of a live and let live situation.

Laura and Chris are both very nice people and great hosts. Laura's place was good for the night we had in Halifax however the house is extremely old and smelled of their dog everywhere. The room was extremely small without a lock so when we were not there we had to stop the door from opening using suitcases. The free parking on the street in front of their house is great.

I did not have a chance to meet Laura. Her door doesn't require a key to open so we could arrive at anytime. We arrived at 3 when Laura was still at work and she hadn't had time to clean the room from the previous guest so we couldn't really lay down after being on the road for many hours. We also received a parking ticket because there is no overnight parking on Thursday nights. We missed that street sign, so we ended up with a $25 ticket. Laura said they had that problem in the past but she didn't think I would have to pay the ticket because I don't have a Nova Scotia license plate. It would be nice if Laura could be more descriptive about parking near their house for their future guests and make sure to add in that there is no overnight parking on Thursday nights. There is also a VERY STRONG ODOUR when you enter the house. If you have a sensitive nose this might not be the place for you. The house is in the north end of Halifax. It was walking distance to the harbour and most of the main attractions. The north end isn't the safest area but the city is currently working on cleaning it up. Overall we had a pretty good experience at Laura's 18th century fixer upper house.

This house is in a great spot. The bed was comfortable, but the room would be tiny for two people. Despite arriving at or after the check in time, the room hadn't been changed over from the previous guest when I got there. The door closes via a latch on the inside, so you can't close the door from the outside. Given that this was a problem in prior reviews, I'm not sure why they didn't put a proper knob on instead of the make shift latch. The bathroom was not clean. I didn't even want to use the shower because of the dirty tub and stained shower curtain. I only stayed one night so it wasn't a huge deal, but if i'd been staying longer, I'd have had an issue.

Flexibility was appreciated for the entrance in the house. Great location, 10-15 minutes from downtown. Laura and Chris are very kind hosts and have a nice dog also.
