Amazing Dome, Private Suite/Seaview

House - Private room · Arbutus Avenue, Maple Bay, Duncan, British Columbia V9L5X5, Canada

The Space

The whole East wing of a one-in-a-million owner-built home in picturesque Maple Bay. We have spent nearly forty years creating our home, and now we would love to share it with you.

We live in the 32 foot diameter geodesic dome.

Built on to it is a large hexagonal wing; this will be all yours. There is a connecting conservatory; this is where you have your breakfast, with a view out over the bay.
There is a microwave oven, fridge, toaster, coffee maker and kettle; we provide a Continental breakfast of cereals, bread, croissants, jams and yoghurt, and we will clean your dishes!
On the lower floor is a pretty bedroom (with a queen-sized bed) looking out over a landscaped garden, with a view across the sea to Saltspring Island.
The morning sun comes up over the mountain in the distance, and when the moon is up, it shines into the bedroom window.
Next to the bedroom is the full private bathroom with shower. A hair drier is provided, as well as towels, soap etc. of course..
On the top floor is the living room, which doubles as a dance and art room, with a large open wooden floor , and a wood stove for chilly nights (please ask us to light the fire for you!). There is a big-screen T.V. and a complete sound/video system.
This whole area will be your private suite.

We also love to travel, and have stayed in some wonderful homes through Airbnb; we are sure you will enjoy your visit to our house, and the friendly Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.

We are within striking distance of the capital of Victoria,as well as Nanaimo, Cowichan Bay, Chemainus and its murals, Lake Cowichan and Saltspring Island. (The ferry to Saltspring is only 10 minutes away). The West Coast and Tofino are a within reach on a morning's drive.
There are a dozen wineries in the Cowichan Valley and several golf-courses within a 20 minute drive.
Kayaks are for rent in Maple Bay. There are whale-watching tours in Cowichan Bay, as well the ancient lawn tennis club (1887), about 12 minutes away.

There is a regular seaplane service flying in to Maple Bay; a quick 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver. There are also local public tennis courts just down the road.

Maple Bay is a very quiet village about 8 kilometres from the local town of Duncan, the City of Totems. There is a bus service to Duncan.

From our living room we can see a Bald Eagle's nest. Deer on the lawn, raccoons sneaking around at night, and even an otter visits occasionally and checks out our swimming pool!

The house is surrounded by about an acre of landscaping; lawns and flowers and rockeries, and behind the house is Maple Mountain Park and its hiking trails.
A short walk down to the local pub, or a short drive to excellent neighbourhood restaurants....it's all here!
We look forward to meeting you!

Please contact us about availability before booking and please tell us a little about yourself.
Sometimes it is possible to open up a day that is marked as unavailable.
We teach Argentine tango locally; lessons are available in our house for $40 per hour. We love to introduce people to our passion for the REAL tango!

Guest Access

Guests have the whole addition to themselves; almost the size of a regular house. There is a separate entrance, and you will have the key.

Interaction with Guests

We love to meet and chat and to get to know our guests, but of course we leave it up to you as to how much...............

The Neighborhood

We've lived here for 40 years, and have traveled to most places on Vancouver Island, but we have never found a place where we would rather live; we think this is the prettiest area of all, and the little town of Duncan (10 minutes away) has all the facilities that we need.
Living on a very quiet dead-end street, with a beautiful view of the sheltered sea, gives us a wonderful, peaceful life.

Getting around

There is an occasional bus from Maple Bay to Duncan, but really, a car is needed to see the area properly.

  • We couldn't have asked for a better first experience with Airbnb. John and Linda were exceptional hosts and their beautiful and unique home is really something to marvel at. From the spectacular view of the bay to the warm breakfast of homemade croissants, jams and granola we felt like were in the epicenter of tranquility the whole time. I particularly enjoyed watching the birds and Linda's feeders and sitting by the wood stove in the guest house. John and Linda also gave us some fantastic recommendations for places to eat in things to see in the area. If you're looking for a truly unique B&B experience definitely do not pass up a chance to stay at the amazing dome!

Thanks Jayme.............it was a real pleasure to have you both here.

  • Best airbnb stay EVER! From the beautiful surroundings, to wonderful John and Linda, to the homemade croissants in the mornings.. it doesn't get better than staying with John and Linda! Maple Bay is gorgeous, refreshing, quaint and peaceful. The view from the room is beyond spectacular, it overlooks an amazing garden, tall trees, and the beautiful sea. The bed is very comfortable and the breakfast is delicious!!

John and Linda are the dream hosts. So welcoming and friendly and helpful. It was a delight getting to know them and spending some time with them. The dome is sensational and pictures don't even do it justice. Our stay was everything we dreamed of and more. A true gem of a find on airbnb!

  • Staying at Linda and John's home is an inspiration for your imagination! From the ride up the driveway to the arched entrance gate is spectacular. The view is breathtaking. There were deer in the yard at night. One morning while writing in my journal I saw a flock of pigeons flying in circular formation thanking John for breakfast. A sight to behold. John and Linda love sharing their home and stories, one favorite is the idea they had to blast the mountain for a swimming pool for their children as they were growing up. Linda served me the biggest warm croissant's I have ever had with fresh picked blackberries in their backyard! YUM I wish I could take all my friends and family to visit them. I will send them because it was magical meeting them and sharing their sacred space.a

  • There is so much to say about this truly remarkable home. John built this house with his own hands. How cool is that? And, on top of that, it's a dome house! With a great view of Maple Bay!

Each morning you are treated to a great breakfast with homemade baked goods. Croissants, bread, granola. There's a great assortment of local teas and coffee. You can take your breakfast out onto the front patio that looks out over the water, or out back by the pool.

John and Linda are such great hosts. So kind. And such excellent Tango dancers! They will help you find fun local events and other great destinations. I recommend the tea farm!

Duncan is only ten minutes away. And they've got most things you might need. Good restaurants and all that. You're about an hour away from Victoria, which isn't bad. But, if you're like me, you won't want to leave the house. I feel comfortable saying that it is the most amazing home I have ever seen. I not only recommend that you stay here — I insist upon it! Go out of your way, and come visit!

  • Where do we begin with accolades for the most beautiful place to stay; for the warmest welcome; for yummy home-made granola; for an extraordinarily tranquil and serene night’s sleep and two wonderful
    hosts.

The photos do not do this ‘perfect patch of paradise’ justice. The scenery is breathtaking; the breakfast nook is softly decorated and inviting. The bedroom looks down on a garden filled with beautiful perennials; butterflies, deer and a family of quail. Of course, we were greeted by the sunrise over Maple Bay peeking through an enormous Cedar each morning. The swimming pool – you just have to see it to believe it!

Any special requests; John and Linda were quick to research and send us off with options of places to see, things to do and especially places to eat and people to meet!

Their passion – The Tango! Take your dancing shoes and go with the flow…

We’re not sure that we want to share all our enjoyment because it might make it more difficult for us to get reservations when we want to return!! We thank you for a wonderful few days in your charming geodesic-dome-home!

  • John and Linda are incredibly warm hosts. We instantly felt very welcome. We were having such a great time we had to book another night. Plan for at least three nights, as there is plenty to see and do in the area. Be sure to leave time, however, to simply stay home. John and Linda have created a paradise. From sitting poolside to eating delicious homemade granola, our stay was perfect. Don't miss out!

  • The dome is amazing and so are John and Linda.
They made me feel very welcome and oriented me to the area with great suggestions for restaurants, bike trails etc.
The home and swimming pool are exceptional. A slice of paradise.

  • You must stay here and meet John & Linda! They are very warm and welcoming and the dome experience is so unique. The views are lush and peaceful, the bed comfy, the upper room with sofa, fireplace, desk and yet more views are just fabulous. Linda made us her delicious homemade muffins for breakfast - so very appreciated! Maybe next time Baxter, the cat, will have gotten used to having people visiting his house and will spend some time with us.

  • My parents stayed at John and Linda's for four nights; they were amazing hosts, and felt like they were staying with old friends. John and Linda were very accommodating and kind (even when my dad had to go to a walk-in clinic). Their place was amazing, quiet and peaceful. They will definitely recommend staying here; the hosts, home and surroundings are beautiful.

  • Wow - John and Linda live in the most amazing place! The directions to get here were spot on, and as I wound the car down towards the Maple Bay sea I knew this would be a very special place to stay.

John and Linda made me feel extremely welcome, it really was like being part of their family. Such a vibrant and energetic couple, they introduced me to life on Vancouver Island and shared really interesting and useful information about what to see and do.

The room / suite is really stunning, with one the best views from a bed I've ever seen! Watching the sun rise and the moon over the water in the evenings was very special and something I won't forget. I only wish I had more than a couple of days there to explore and enjoy.

I can highly recommend this unique property with a very warm welcome - John and Linda really went above and beyond their role to make it a stay I'll always remember.
