We welcome you to your private suite in our home by the sea.
We live in the picturesque community of Maple Bay, on Southern Vancouver Island.
Close to seaside villages and country towns, and 1 hour from the capital city of B.C., Victoria.
The whole East wing of a one-in-a-million owner-built home in picturesque Maple Bay. We have spent over forty years creating our home, and now we would love to share it with you.
We live in the 32 foot diameter geodesic dome, but the hexagonal addition is almost like a separate house and will be all yours.
There is a connecting conservatory; this is where you have your breakfast, with a view out over the bay.
There is a microwave oven, fridge, coffee maker and kettle; we provide a Continental breakfast of homemade granola, croissants, homemade jams, and yoghurt, and we will wash your dishes!
On the lower floor is a pretty bedroom (with a queen-sized bed) looking out over a landscaped garden, with a view across the sea to Saltspring Island.
The morning sun comes up over the mountain in the distance, and when the moon is up, it shines into the bedroom window.
Next to the bedroom is the full private bathroom with shower. A hair drier is provided, as well as towels, soap, shampoo etc.
On the top floor is the living room, which doubles as a dance and art room, with a large open wooden floor, with a big screen T.V. and DVD player.
We too love to travel, and have stayed in some wonderful homes through Airbnb; we are sure you will enjoy your visit to our house, and the friendly Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.
We are within one hour's drive of the capital of Victoria,as well as Nanaimo, Cowichan Bay, Chemainus and its murals, Lake Cowichan and Saltspring Island. (The ferry to Saltspring is only 10 minutes away). The West Coast and Tofino are a within reach on a morning's drive.
There are a dozen wineries in the Cowichan Valley and several golf-courses within a 20 minute drive.
Kayaks are for rent in Maple Bay. There are whale-watching tours in Cowichan Bay (mention that you are staying with us and you will get a 10% discount), as well the ancient lawn tennis club (1887), about 12 minutes away.
There is a regular seaplane service flying in to Maple Bay; a quick 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver. There are also local public tennis courts just down the road.
Maple Bay is a very quiet village about 8 kilometres from the local town of Duncan, the City of Totems. There is a bus service to Duncan.
From our living room we can see a Bald Eagle's nest. Deer on the lawn, raccoons sneaking around at night, and even an otter visits occasionally and checks out our swimming pool!
The house is surrounded by about an acre of landscaping; lawns and flowers and rockeries, and behind the house is Maple Mountain Park and its hiking trails.
A short walk down to the local pub, or a short drive to excellent neighbourhood restaurants....it's all here!
We look forward to meeting you!
Please contact us about availability before booking and please tell us a little about yourself.
Sometimes it is possible to open up a day that is marked as unavailable.
We teach Argentine tango locally; lessons are available in our house for $40 per hour. We love to introduce people to our passion for the REAL tango!
Guests have the whole ADDITION to themselves; almost the size of a regular house. There is a separate entrance, and you will have the key; we live in the main house and will be happy to show you around the dome.
Interaction with Guests
We love to meet and chat and to get to know our guests, but of course we leave it up to you as to how much...............
We've lived here for over 40 years, and have traveled to most places on Vancouver Island, but we have never found a place where we would rather live; we think this is the prettiest area of all, and the little town of Duncan (10 minutes away) has all the facilities that we need.
Living on a very quiet dead-end street, with a beautiful view of the sheltered sea, gives us a wonderful, peaceful life.
There is an occasional bus from Maple Bay to Duncan, but really, a car is needed to see the area properly.
Please remove outdoor shoes when entering.
Please maintain the quiet atmosphere of the house.
Our driveway would not be suitable for a large RV.
Continental style breakfast so that you can serve yourselves when you are ready.
Please turn off the lights when not needed and keep the downstairs doors closed to maintain room temperatures. Thank you.
Please do not light the wood stove without checking with us first.
Sorry, no children, and no pets.
Babes in arms OK.(ie non-mobile babies)
Please contact us about availability before booking, and please make sure that you have a profile picture and a few lines about yourself in your membership sign up page. Thank you.
This leg of our trip was amazing thanks mostly to John and Linda's hospitality and the absolutely breathtaking setting. Fresh croissants, tea and coffee, and ample breakfast was waiting for us every morning. John and Linda often checked in to make sure we didn't need anything and offered plenty of suggestions for places to go and things to do. The section of the house where we stayed was very private and peaceful overlooking Maple Bay. We would strongly recommend staying here for anyone wanting to experience this beautiful part of BC.
The previous reviews of John and Linda's home say it all. Our vacation in the Maple Bay area was an exceptionally memorable experience because of their hospitality. John and Linda's home is truly unique and magical. We are so grateful to them for sharing it with us.
It was the best air BnB experience we've had! John and Linda, you are absolutely great! Thank you for all your tips what to do and see in Maple Bay, for the awesome breakfast and just for having us over in your amazing house.
We loved our stay in the amazing dome. John and Linda were warm and welcoming hosts- very available to answer questions, but respectful of our privacy. Both were eager to share their love of the area and offered many suggestions for things to see. They had the fridge stocked with some essentials- juice, muffins, homemade granola, and offered buttery croissants with homemade jam every morning for breakfast.
The living room was gorgeous, with a spectacular view that went on for miles. It was the perfect spot to relax after a long day or do a little yoga before heading out for a day of adventure. The bedroom was cozy and comfortable. The sheets were soft, and the blankets and towels were fluffy. Everything was spotlessly clean and well tended.
The location is great- John and Linda gave good directions around the twists and turns of the neighborhood. From their house, it is easy to head north towards Nanaimo or south towards Victoria. A great way to explore the area!
We highly recommend staying at the dome, and we would stay there again.
We had such an amazing time at John and Linda's beautiful home! It was everything we thought it would be and more. So individual, phenomenal views and what a story to go along with the house! Thank you so much for being such friendly and approachable hosts, and for telling us about the history of the house. The breakfast was also totally delicious and we can't wait to try the granola recipe. We've left with such happy memories of staying at the dome and exploring the area around it!
We had a wonderful stay with John and Linda in their beautiful and unique home! They were very friendly, gracious and helpful ( I took their advice on where to eat and where to go walking and such and was very happy). The suite is private, but if you need anything John and Linda are close by, also waking up to that view is a great way to start the day (followed by a yummy breakfast!). The location is perfect for exploring nearby quaint ocean-side villages, wineries and the beautiful scenery of the Cowichan Valley. Thank you for our wonderful stay, we had a beautiful weekend!
John and Linda made us feel very welcome in their dome. Their selfbuilt home is amazingly beautiful and so is the area (we ran into some squirrles, chipmunks and deer). You have a lot of room as a guest and it's all clean and comfy.
We loved the croissants and muffins Linda baked for us. John and Linda also gave us some great advice on what to do and see and they had a lot of information folders on the area there for us.
We had a great stay!
Originally from England, where we met at the BBC, Linda and I are a couple in our 60s.
We love to travel, and to dance Argentine Tango wherever we go.
We also enjoy encouraging beginners to take up tango, and are always available to give private lessons in our dance room. We have two children, and two grand-children.
