The space

Gagakuan is a 100- old- Machiya (townhouse) which I renovated inside into a modern house, convenient for living with high-tech facilities and using creative materials from all over the world.

It is located 5 min by taxi, 1 stop by subway from Kyoto station. It is very central of city but it is very quiet because it is off of main road.
After having a long day sightseeing you can relax and feel home even you are away from home.

Mako is an excellent host and Gagakuan a comfortable and peaceful sanctuary from which to explore Kyoto. While the house is near a busy street and a school, it was always fairly quiet and the house has a calm and relaxing atmosphere. We found the environment and space in the house to be nicer than the photography in the listing led us to expect. While not right in the heart of all the biggest Kyoto attractions, Gagakuan is convenient to walk downtown or get the subway, train or bus anywhere. We found it preferable to stay just a little outside the most tourist focused areas. Overall, we had a wonderful stay and would likely stay at Gagakuan again in future visits to Kyoto.

Mako was such a great hostess. Her attention to details at everything is very much appreciated. The house is in quiet neighborhood and easy walk to the train station. It is very roomy and got enough separation if you have more than 2 people. We had coffee and tea every morning which is quite nice. Everything in the house works well and clean. We love the design of the place too.

Old world charm meets modern conveniences. That's how I would describe Mako place. Besides being such a wonderful place to stay, modern, charming and comfortable our host Mako was so nice and welcoming. She welcomed us with yummy Kyoto treats, breakfast for the next day and gave us insights on Kyoto. The place is actually quite roomy for our family. There is one bathroom upstairs and one downstairs. I love the clean and modern bathrooms. We all slept upstairs but there is a small room downstairs that can be used as a bedroom also. The place is very warm with heated floors if you want to use them. Even though it was quite cold in Kyoto the home was warm. The place is very convenient also. Minutes away from supermarket, shops, restaurants, bus stops and subway station. An easy 15 min walk to Kyoto Station or one stop to Gojo karasuma Station from Kyoto station. I would love to stay here again on our next trip to Kyoto if we are lucky and Mako's place is available. Thank you Mako again for being special and gracious host!

Mako is the best Airbnb host we've ever had. She is very communicative and so helpful. We had a little difficulty finding the correct unit but were able to call her and get things figured out right away. She set up a birthday dinner reservation for my husband and I, and delivered a cake and gifts to the restaurant for us! It was so sweet, and unexpected. We did self check in, but we hope to meet Mako one day! Taking a taxi from Kyoto station using Mako's provided Japanese instructions were perfect. I actually used the same instructions other nights we went out and took a cab back to the house. The house is gorgeous and has everything you need. We were thankful for the washing machine since we had been traveling in Japan for a while. Mako's recommendations for restaurants and bars are great! We rented bikes to get around the city and took the trains (there's a station pretty close by). The a/c works very well in the house and was appreciated on hot days. The bed is so comfy! Mako made our Kyoto experience very memorable and we are so thankful for her opening her home to share! We will be back! Thanks!

Mako made us feel at home right away. She was the most hospitable host that that I have encountered in a long time. She was extremely helpful in finding great restaurants, nice bars, and making the rest of our itinerary less stressful by recommending us to reduce the amount of luggage that we were carrying and have it sent to Osaka The Machiya was immaculate. I have found a new way to view luxury. The Machiya is the best utilization of minimal space that I have ever come across. It is the most well thought out, well designed, harmonious blend between ancient hardware and high tech software, that I have ever (URL HIDDEN) almost poetic, truly a piece of art. It throws out the notion that luxury must be big and excessive, and introduces, at least to me, that luxury can be defined as everything that we need and nothing that we don't need. Hat's off to Mako, the proprietor and designer of this wonderful Machiya. I kept discovering new facets about it that amazed me during my stay. Thank You Mako for making our stay in Kyoto one to remember and we will definitely be visiting again soon. Cheers

Gagakuan was the best!! We absolutely loved our stay in Kyoto and Mako was a big part of that. Mako greeted us and gave us all the info about trains and busses we could need! She pointed out many wonderful places to visit while in Kyoto as well. The home was so comfortable and cozy, it was the best place to come back to after a day of adventuring. I couldn't have asked for more! I would love to come back one day :) Thanks Mako!!
