iris's Flat is a spacious, extremely stylish and sophisticated apartment located in the heart of Trastevere. Owned by Iris, an Israeli fashion designer who travels the world for inspiration for her designs about six months of the year, the apartment is often used as a showroom for clothing, jewelry, and ceramics collections. While Iris is away, she rents her place out to guests with the help of friend and neighbor Piera, who lives right around the corner; Piera is very friendly and helpful, happy to be on hand if guests need anything.
Iris has made sure that everything in the apartment is of the highest quality: all kitchen utensils are handmade Japanese ceramic; all towels are hand-woven fabrics; all curtains are silk; and so on. As she says, "you won't find any plastic pasta drainers here." The living room is the centerpiece of the apartment; it's huge and decorated with an international vibe (as is the rest of the apartment), with interesting furniture and decorative pieces from her many travels. The bedroom has a comfortable queen-sized bed, and in the living room are three portable mattresses that can be made up and put on the floor of the living room in case of a third or fourth guest. The extremely well-stocked kitchen is on the small side but still spacious enough to easily cook, and there is a small table by the window which serves as a "breakfast nook". The cave-like bathroom, which has no windows, is decorated in a way that reminds me of a Turkish hammam, and the bathtub is huge, perfect for a long, luxurious bath pretending you are at a chic spa!
Guests also have access to the large rooftop terrace of the building, where there is a table, chairs, and benches so you take in some sun while reading a book, having breakfast, a glass of wine, etc; laundry can also be hung up there to dry.
Iris's place is located on Via Manara in Trastevere, just near San Cosimato, the bustling open morning market of Trastevere. Trastevere is well-connected by bus and tram, so it's easy to get around the rest of the city, and you can walk to other parts of the historic center of Rome from there (Campo de' Fiori, Piazza Navona, etc).
Iris' flat is like Aladdin's cave, sumptuous carpets and fabrics, exotic objects and artworks throughout. Living room furniture is comfortable. Bathroom is like a Moroccan day spa with a huge bath tub that anyone who loves long indulgent baths will find heavenly. Shower had good pressure. The king size bed was very firm and we slept soundly for the 3 weeks we stayed. The kitchen was well equipped and I loved the range of ceramics. There is no dishwasher or microwave but was no problem for us.
For those with heavy luggage, there is a lift and two sets of four stairs leading to the lift.
Iris was an attentive host and responded to emails quickly and helpfully. Piera met us and led us through the flat when we arrived. Regular cleaning was offered but we didn't really need this. The washing machine worked well and clothes dried in a day hung on a rack in the huge living room.
Because the flat faces the internal courtyard it is very quiet but also dark [except the kitchen]. Great in the hot weather. We were out everyday so not greatly effected by this. Each window has planter boxes to provide privacy and pleasant outlook.
I found living without a tv in the living room fantastic and enjoyed exploring Iris' CDs. The TV in bedroom works. There was a huge collection of CDs in a range of languages [except English]. The Wifi was excellent .
We thoroughly loved the ambience of Iris' flat. Soaring ceilings, beautiful textures and exotic objects were good for the soul after being the tourist everyday. I would return in a heartbeat and would happily recommend this flat, location, hosts and amenities.
We were very surprised by the enchanting atmosphere in the beautifully decorated flat.
It's as if we were in the East...Great!
Iris was the perfect host - we felt very welcome and enjoyed our stay throughout.
The flat is perfectly located (bars , restaurants, market) and only a short walk from all the attractions rome has to offer. Highly recommended and we will be back for sure.
The apartment lives up to its description and everything the other reviewers have said. It is very well located, spacious, unique and well appointed. It truly is a "designer" flat with a kind of North African (like the Riad we stayed in in Marrakesh) feel. Email arrangements with Iris and help in Rome by Piera all went smoothly. Highly recommended.
Well located, spacious and unique apartment. The ceilings were so high that we felt like we were in an oriental palace! Everything went smoothly, from Piera's welcome to our departure. Thank you for letting us enjoy your beautiful home!
Very spacious, Indian decorated apartment in Trastevere. Good location with many restaurants and bars in the area. We didn't meet Iris but the lady that looks after the apartment (called Piera) who is very friendly and helpful.
Very large apartment, great location and comfortable bed (a must after walking all day). Good communication and good support when in Rome. No problems. The apartment is a bit dark (not too much natural light) but very nice. Local restaurants are very good. Only 20 mins walk to Pantheon etc. Lovely change to hotels.
I absolutely recommend this flat for your vacation in rome! It was a great place to stay. You have everything you need in and outside the flat: A nice cafe with the best coffee in town, a market with fresh products, a supermarket, heaps of bars and restaurants, stores for fresh cut prosciutto di parma, mozzarella cheese, italian wine, fresh pasta and bread – and all this is just around the corner! The taxis are not far away either but they also pick you up from the house – you just have to dial a number and the taxi is there within seconds without talking to anybody! You don't meet Iris in person but Piera. Her english is not that good, but her son is always helping out! She and her son are really nice people. The Flat is clean, quiet, comfy and not to hot in summer. You have air condition, fast wifi and there is also a roof terrace for a sundowner with a bottle of red wine! And you have a well equipped kitchen which was important to me! I cooked almost every evening some great pasta dishes! I love this flat and would always come back! I had a great time!
This is an amazing apartment, even better than the photos convey - convenient to the best of everything and most of all - so peaceful and quiet! A good night's sleep is always possible here. It was spotlessly clean and well presented. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend it.
