The Space

Conde Nast named it the Best City in the World. Beautiful San Miguel de Allende, colonial gem in the heart of Mexico. At Casa Lenita, your guestroom offers your own bath,a community terrace with trees and plants, comfy furniture, privacy and tranquility. We share the street entrance, but your space is upstairs and separate. Stairs to the azotea provide 360 views of the Parroquia and surrounding hills, church domes and gorgeous star-filled night skies.

Your room includes a comfortable queen size bed, internet, tastefully decorated with Guatemalan and Mexican textiles and art by your host. Coffee, tea, fruit available, and coffee maker is in your room. Always plenty of filtered water for your use. Traditional boveda ceiling, computer desk, lots of windows, you just might never want to leave. But leave you must, if you want to see San Miguel and it's shops, galleries, museums, jardines, cobblestone streets, parades, dancers, musicians, all the things that make this the best destination in colonial Mexico.

This is a safe and lively neighborhood in Colonia Guadalupe, where kids play in the street and everyone greets you with a smile. Recently we were officially designated as The Guadalupe Arts District, and you will find beautiful colorful murals on the walls as you stroll around the streets. If you like, I can book you a full or half day tour of the studios of our artists in this Arts District. I will also find you a workshop or class to fit your needs, be they art, yoga, or meditation. Need a good masseuse, acupuncture, or something else? Just let me know and I'll get you the info. Want to create your own art, write your novel, present a workshop? My studio is almost always available to you for whatever you wish to work on. Yes, you're very own artist residency without the application process!

We're a flat 5 to 7 min. walk to both Centro and Fabrica Aurora, 2 min. walk to Via Organica market, restaurant and El Pato art store. The tienda on our corner has produce, and just about anything you need.

Two blocks away you can catch a bus or a taxi if you wish to venture further.

My home is smoke-free, pet-free and scent-free; if you have allergies, this is a healthy and perfect environment for you. Sorry, no handicap access.

Guest Access

Besdides your room: Terrace, rooftop, and usually the art studio and kitchen but only by prior agreement.

Interaction with Guests

Sometimes I'm here, sometimes not. House manager is on duty if I'm not. When I am here, nteraction with guests only as they wish. Guests have entire second floor, with as much privacy as they desire.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood, Colonia Guadalupe, has been officially designated as The Arts District. This means there is a large number of artists living and working here, there are street murals and street festivals happening and changing the face and feeling of the community. And last but not least, there is an art store, an organic market and restaurant, and other necessities like hardware stores, tiendas for any kinds of groceries, and we're close to the galleries and stores in the Fabrica Aurora.

Getting around

Urban bus stops 2 blocks from my house, taxis easy to find. First class bus terminal for other cities in Mexico is about a mile away. From airports, you can come to San Miguel via this terminal, on either ETN or Primera Plus, both luxury buses. Or, you can schedule an airport shuttle with BajioGo, whether you fly into Mexico City, Leon, or Queretaro.

  • The king size bed was comfortable, although no chair or desk was in the room. The room was quiet and peaceful as it was on the second floor. There are 2 public spaces which are outdoors. The neighborhood was a sweet Mexican neighborhood called Colonia Guadalupe. It is safe and colorful and convenient to the Centro and there are plenty of buses and taxis although you can walk to most destinations.

Lena met us before we moved in to her home because she was going out of the country while we would be staying there. There were a few glitches: we had no hot water for three days, then when we started to use the kitchen and dining room, the housesitter and Lena informed us we could not use those spaces unless we rent the whole house.. This was a problem since the available public spaces were all outside. Since it is the rainy season we would have to eat and work in our room which did not have enough space, nor did it have a table or desk. Since there was no mention of this limitation in the description of the space this all came as a surprise to us .

Subsequently we tried to eat outside the house as often as possible. This turned out to be problematic because there were restaurants in the neighborhood southeast of us called Colonia San Rafael that was not safe. In summary, the experience was fine except for the few bumps in the road along the way. We would recommend Lena's home subject to the few caveats listed above.

  • We had a wonderful time at Casa de Lena! Really, photos cannot do this place justice, it is a paradise. My only regret is that we did not stay long enough! My boyfriend and I were here for three nights, and Lena was a gracious host and a great resource for recommendations around town.

  • This was our first AirBnB experience and Lena made it so easy. We wanted to experience staying in a real casa in San Miguel de Allende and the Copa de Oro was perfect. The room was a delight with the most comfy bed we have slept in in Mexico. The terrace was a great place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine. The neighbourhood felt very safe and we walked everywhere.
Lena gave us tips on things to do and good places to eat. The Organica cafe and shop was just around the corner and being coeliac I was delighted to find they had great gluten free treats.
We enjoyed catching Lena as we were coming and going. She made us feel very welcome. Through the AirBnB connection, we had the good fortune of catching her most recent exhibition in Oaxaca,"Huiples Contemporaneos".
What a talented artist. The exhibition had a real narrative that we could connect with and demonstrated Lena's empathy for the woman of Mexico and South America. So glad we started down the AirBnB road.

  • I had an absolutely lovely stay at Casa de Lena! What a beautiful, peaceful place.
From the moment I arrived Lena was so warm & welcoming to me. The room & terrace are even more stunning in person than in the photos- Lena has decorated the entire home in Mexican/Guatemalan style, so you really feel like you're surrounded by Latino culture.
Great location- 10min walk or less into town, but also far enough away that when you at the house you're in your own little place of tranquility. Being located in the arts district it was great to wander around the streets in the neighbourhood & admire all of the amazing street art.
Lena had fruit, snacks, tea & coffee making facilities in the room which was lovely. Beautiful tiled bathroom just off the room, comfortable bed, my own little balcony that looked into the garden, I didn't want to leave! Muchas gracias Lena :)

  • My husband and I stayed at Lena's casa for three days and really enjoyed our time there. It is located in a local neighbourhood about 10 minutes walk to Centro so great location. There was a tienda on one corner and a lavanderia around the other one, both of which we visited.

Lena is a gracious, helpful host who has thought of everything to make your stay comfortable.
Her house is beautifully decorated in bright colours and wonderful art work. She had fresh water, fruit, coffee and tea available in the room when we arrived and it was appreciated.

We stayed in the yellow room at the top of the house, both the bedroom and bathroom were spotless and beautifully decorated as well. The outdoor space was the same. It was quiet with the normal sounds of the neighbourhood and the church bells to welcome us. We would definitely recommend this AirBnB and we hope to return to spend more time in this interesting town.

  • Lena's house was unique and artfully decorated. We did not meet Lena during our stay, but her house reflected one of a true artist. We stayed at the golden room, decorated with bright and cheerful colors. The bed was comfortable and no detail was spared. From water, tea and fruit to welcome us, to even a hat and a shopping bag to take with us to our walks downtown (only about a 10 minute walk). The terraze was also bright and airy as well as beautiful and comfortable. The neighborhood had some impressive murals.

  • We stayed at both of Lena's rooms at her home/studio. Both rooms were really great! We loved being in the neighborhood and getting a taste of what it's like to live in San Miguel de Allende. Sitting out on the terrace was quite a pleasure to take a break during the day. The rooms are comfortable, and being surrounded by Lean's artworks was a joy. I hope we can make it back soon!

  • Casita Lena was a lovely place. I had the upstairs bedroom and availed myself of the kitchen to make myself breakfast. A real neighbourhood! A short walk from the Centro historical. Everything about Casita Lena was soulful! from her personal art collection to the tasteful decor. Hats off to Lena! Lena's staff were extremely friendly and attentive. San Miguel is an interesting place! especially for anglophones for whom there is much to do. I highly recommend Guanajuato as a side trip while you are in San Miguel. University town with more young people and more Spanish-speaking.

  • Lena was a wonderful host. She showed us around her place and explained everything in detail. She left information in our room about San Miguel with recommendations for restaurants and shops that were very useful. The room was very nice, clean, and the decoration was beautiful. The house is very well located just 10 minutes walk to downtown and 5 minutes to Via Organica (a very good organic restaurant). I will definitely stay at her place again.

  • This apartment is stunning. The photos here look very good but in person it's just fantastic. We don't understand how she can offer it at this price! This was one of the best places we have ever stayed anywhere in the world. On the practical side, the shower is very hot with good pressure. Having a washing machine and a terrace with a clothesline was a great convenience. San Miguel de Allende can get cold at night so there is a heater in the bedroom too.

We really appreciated staying in a non-touristy area of San Miguel de Allende. Lena's house is just minutes away from the center, but we were in a real neighbourhood, not trapped with other tourists.

Lena was such a warm, wonderful, and interesting host. We do wish we stayed longer so we could talk to her more. We left behind some chargers at Lena's house by accident and she offered to mail it back to us, it was so kind of her. We really hope to return some day!

Artist in (my own) Residence
About
Artist for many years, expat from Santa Fe, N.M. living full time in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. I'm an easy guest and some people say a great host. I love meeting new people from all over the world. I don't love big groups, don't party, non-smoker, no drugs, nice radical grandmotherly cosmic space-explorer artist type. I'm happy to show you my San Miguel if you are new to the scene. Sagittarian, feminist, flexitarian, borderline Buddhist / spiritual being just being here now, I love galleries, museums, cultural experiences of any kind. I know the art scene in San Miguel and will happily give you a tour of our neighborhood, the newly designated Arts District of Colonia Guadalupe. My rooms are like your own private artist residencies, so come and explore, create, let San Miguel inspire you. "All art, all the time!"
