This is a safe and lively neighborhood in Colonia Guadalupe, where kids play in the street and everyone greets you with a smile. Recently we were officially designated as The Arts District, and you will find beautiful colorful murals on the walls as you stroll around the streets. If you like, I can book you a full or half day tour of the studios of our artists in this Arts District. I will also find you a workshop or class to fit your needs, be they art, yoga, or meditation. Need a good masseuse, acupuncture, or something else? Just let me know and I'll get you the info.
We're a flat 5 to 7 min. walk to both Centro and Fabrica Aurora, 2 min. walk to Via Organica market, restaurant and El Pato art store. The tienda on our corner has produce, and just about anything you need.

Interaction with Guests
Sometimes I'm here, sometimes not. House manager is on duty if I'm not. When I am here, nteraction with guests only as they wish. Guests have entire second floor, with as much privacy as they desire. As for me personally, I'm usually in the studio working, so have less time to hang out than those who are on vacation.
Our neighborhood, Colonia Guadalupe, has been officially designated The Arts District. This means there is a large number of artists living and working here, there are street murals and street festivals happening and changing the face and feeling of the community. And last but not least, there is an art store, an organic market and restaurant, and other necessities like hardware stores, tiendas for any kinds of groceries, and we're close to the galleries and stores in the Fabrica Aurora.
Urban bus stops 2 blocks from my house, taxis easy to find. First class bus terminal for other cities in Mexico is about a mile away. From airports, you can come to San Miguel via this terminal, on either ETN or Primera Plus, both luxury buses. Or, you can schedule an airport shuttle with BajioGo, whether you fly into Mexico City, Leon, or Queretaro.
Sorry, there's no parking except on the street.
No smoking, no pets, no children. There might not be a lot of places in San Miguel where you can stop worrying about your allergies to pet dander and cigarette smoke. Your consideration of perfume-free is greatly appreciated. Your little corner of the world here does not include a party house, i.e. hosting your friends here is not permitted. Please keep noise levels to a minimum in the early morning and at night after 10 pm. for the sake of my sanity, other guests and my neighbors. I prefer quiet tenants; artists, writers, filmmakers love it here.
I can not even begin to describe my stay at Lena's. The space is fantastic, clean, beautiful, quite, great location. Lena is a doll and I think will be a very long term friend. I am definitely going back!!!
Lena's home was even more wonderful than was described. Her home is filled with her inspirational art. The private room and bath were beautiful and very clean. There is a terrace for the 2 guest rooms, with an outdoor kitchen that was well equipped. A rooftop terrace affords wonderful views of San Miguel. Lena is a gracious host, who left very helpful information in a guest book. It was nice to have use of a washer, and the coffeemaker was a real plus for me, since I enjoy coffee several times a day. The location is excellent, within easy walking distance to everything. I would definitely stay here again.
Lena's casita is my home away from home in charming San Miguel. (I've stayed three times in the last few years.) It's full of color, life, and good vibes. Copa de Oro is just divine. I love the textiles from Mexico and Guatemala along with the Lena's artwork. Outside the room is the brand new outdoor kitchen! It's awesome with all the basics including a hot plate, coffee maker, and mini-fridge. Just imagine yourself eating homemade quesadillas with fresh avocado atop the beautiful terrace. It's magical.
I have an endless list of superlatives to describe our two week stay
in San Miguel de Allende at Lena Bartula's beautiful home situated in. a great "non-touristy" neighborhood .
I'll start with Lena herself who is a warm, intelligent and open person who we were able to consult with many times about the pragmatic what, where and how in San Miguel. Lena is a an accomplished artist and activist and had lots of info. to share about the cultural, political and community life of the city. She had a wonderful way of being available to help but never intrusive. (What
a gift to guests!)
Lena also provided an extensive notebook with information about
the city and, very importantly, details about the house - keys, lights, housekeeper, telephone numbers, etc. which was invaluable.
Our accommodations were esthetically beautiful and very comfortable. - a lovely bathroom and bedroom, access to a terrace and roof deck that had stunning views of the city and surrounding hills.
On many days, My partner and I enjoyed preparing a simple breakfast or lunch at Lena's and eating on the deck or terrace. Lena provided coffee pot, small refrigerator, dishes, etc. and we could purchase food items very close by. (In the very near future, Lena is building a kitchen area, on the terrace, with more food preparation amenities.)
To sum it all up, we had a fabulous vacation and Lena and her
beautiful home were an important part of our positive experience.
Karen, you will be pleased to know I ordered the beginnings of the outdoor kitchen this week after you left. I appreciate so much, your input about this. By the end of this next week, I may very well have it in place, but at least, it's begun. It's necessitated a new and more comfortable change on the asset as well, so I feel I got 2 new spaces for the price of one. Will post photos as it all comes together.
Lena is a wonderful host and provided a great stay in SMA. She is welcoming and kind. She offers two great apartments, both upstairs in her beautiful home. One is a bit more private than the other because it's on the far side of the patio. I had the room upstairs inside the main house and it was great. Very comfortable, clean and QUIET!!! Lena is an artist and her wonderful works are on display, so it's like staying in a comfy gallery space. Great shower, BTW. And the location can't be beat. Great neighborhood and an easy walk to centro.

About the Host, Lena
Artist for many years, expat from Santa Fe, N.M. living full time in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. I'm an easy guest and some people say a great host. I love meeting new people from all over the world. I don't love big groups, don't party, non-smoker, no drugs, nice radical grandmotherly cosmic space-explorer artist type. I'm happy to show you my San Miguel if you are new to the scene.
Sagittarian, feminist, flexitarian, borderline Buddhist / spiritual being just being here now, I love galleries, museums, cultural experiences of any kind. I know the art scene in San Miguel and will happily give you a tour of our neighborhood, the newly designated Arts District of Colonia Guadalupe. My rooms are like your own private artist residencies, so come and explore, create, let San Miguel inspire you. "All art, all the time!"
