Natural Attractions

Barham River Picnic Area – Paradise Point
Located approximately 7kms in the hinterland behind Apollo Bay.
Nestled in the valley behind Apollo Bay on the edge of the Barham River. This is a delightful drive alongside the river through the lush countryside. The road is narrow so do take care.

On arrival one picnic area is located near the carpark and toilets. We recommend you follow the track across the road which will lead you to a beautiful picnic area aptly named ‘Paradise’. Here there are a couple of picnic tables set beside the creek under an ancient tree fern canopy.

Great Otway National Park
Great Otway National Park stretches from Torquay, along the world-famous Great Ocean Road and up through the Otways hinterland. Discover windswept coastlines and breathtaking waterfalls in tall mountain forests, walk the iconic Great Ocean Walk, immerse yourself in the Otway Lightstation's history, or surf some of the best breaks in Australia. Enjoy the great outdoors and explore the wonders of the Great Otway National Park.

Hopetoun Falls
Soak up the spray as the Hopetoun Falls plummet 30 metres into the Aire River in the Great Otway National Park. Take in the view from the upper platform or descend some 200 stairs leading through glades of tree ferns to the base of the falls. The platform here has a bench perfect for taking in the views and resting the knees

Lake Elizabeth Walk
A simply wonderful little walk that is hidden away in a beautiful part of the Otway Ranges near the town of Forrest.

Head to Lake Elizabeth hidden deep in the Otways and discover its inspiring beauty with heavily timbered flanks and calm waters punctuated by the trunks of dead trees, drowned when the valley was flooded more than 50 years ago to form this "perched lake". The elusive platypus can be found in the waters of the lake - wake up early or head to Lake Elizabeth at dusk to catch a glimpse of these shy Australian natives.

Marriners Lookout
Views can be enjoyed from just driving up this road however if time permits a walk to the lookout will not disappoint.

A short but fairly steep gravel track takes you to the lookout to enjoy spectacular expansive views overlooking Apollo Bay, Marengo and east to Cape Patton. This is a beautiful spot for a picnic. It is also a popular location for paragliders to take off if the conditions are right.

Stevenson’s Falls
These magnificent falls are located at the end of a gravel road approx 6 kms from Barramunga.. Two walking options are available with clear signage. The short walk option is available from the day picnic area which is located over the second bridge (to the left of the first bridge) This is an easy 500metre walk on a graded trail suitable for all ages and allows you to fully experience the beauty of the Gellibrand River and the fall

The Redwoods
Within the heart of the Otways, on the banks of the Aire River south of Beech Forest surrounded by the native eucalypts, stands a spectacular forest of Californian Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens). This 85 year old plantation of Californian Redwoods has become a favourite local picnic area, the muffled sound and lack of undergrowth provides an interesting contrast to the native wet forest that adorns the opposite bank of the Aire River. Thriving in Otway soil, far from their native California, The Redwoods were originally planted in 1936 by Victorian foresters for experimental purposes. A walk for the first time between the massive trunks flanking the river creates a special feeling of awe and reverence - not to be missed.

The Twelve Apostles
Witness the rugged splendor of the famous 12 Apostles, magnificent rock stacks that rise up majestically from the Southern Ocean on Victoria's dramatic coastline
Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland beginning 10–20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs.
The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 metres high were left isolated from the shore. View the 12 Apostles at sunrise and sunset as they change colour from dark and foreboding in shadow to brilliant sandy yellow under a full sun.

Triplet Falls
Wander through ancient forests of mountain ash and myrtle beech to reach the three distinct, impressive cascades of the Triplet Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Great Otway National Park. A scenic loop walk through rainforest leads to a series of elevated viewing platforms providing stunning views of the three cascades.

Whale Watching
Apollo Bay is known for its stunning natural attractions and excellent whale watching opportunities. The peak season for Southern Right whale watching is during their migration between May and September each year.
