The Space

Very peaceful and comfortable older 3 bedroom home. Perfect for that longer vacation in Mendocino. Rented only once per month. Older, but fully stocked kitchen. One of the few homes in the Village with a path directly to the beach. Find sea glass, driftwood or enjoy a picnic on the beach. Walk everywhere. Restaurants, shops, bookstore, go see a play or take a art class. Great for families or that quiet reading or writing or art project. Right across from a hot tub and massage spa. Relax on the deck. Have a glass of wine and watch the waves. At night enjoy the fireplace or a movie on the large flat screen tv.

  • A great rambling bohemian palace with an eclectic yard populated with grottos, fire pit, and treasures hidden about. Looks out on the river joining the ocean in the prime view with a side angle view out to sea. A path leads down through the blackberries to the beach. The birds like the yard and we saw gold finches and hummingbirds flitting about and crows (ravens?) making their characteristic sounds. Some type of burrowing mammals were busy in the yard.

The rough hewn deck includes a table with benches and a gas grill along with other amenities. While the kitchen is a little tight in the work area, the rest of the house provides ample room with a separate kitchen table in the other half of the kitchen and couches and a picnic bench in the great room as well as a wood stove and tv we never used. It IS an older house (circa 1860 evidently?) and well used. A cacophony of art and treasures is on the walls inside, on shelves, and throughout the yard.

One spacious upstairs room includes a (queen size?) bed and bongo drum. The other upstairs room is smaller but sufficient. Both share a bathroom. The downstairs room has its own bathroom, but the bed is smaller. It included a dresser and desk with lots of real estate to organize on. With only three of us part of the week and 2 the second half (youngest son did not make it) we felt like we underfilled the house. I think even with the maximum four guests you would still feel that way. We were in town for a family reunion and filled the house (and yard) one night as party hosts and that was fun.

The house is on the edge of the village center of Mendocino. We were lucky to be able to drive and brought bikes. They were a pleasure to have to get around. Without them it was still only 3-5 blocks to town center and a few more to other houses our other family groups were staying (not counting a brother and sister in law staying in a place on the other side of the highway and out of the main village).

I'd go back again, and recommend it to the bohemians among you.

  • we really enjoyed our stay here. the backyard is huge and has a beautiful view. we stayed for a wedding that was on the bluff a mile or so away and brought the grandparents to watch our daughter and they were able to see the wedding from the house! anyway, great spot. didn't see the host at all.

  • So enjoyed our month in Mendocino! Thank you to the Starrs who provided a wonderful and historic art-filled house; felt a bit like a scene from a movie - this house and holiday will not be forgotten! Disappointed I didn't get to meet the artist and/or Gary but was happy to communicate with Gary by email on occasion.
My only problem is that I wanted to stay on and live there forever, it was that relaxing and beautiful.

  • We had a wonderful stay in the Mendocino Beach house! And you cannot beat the location. It is just steps away from downtown Mendocino. It has a private path to the beach that is lined with blackberry bushes. The home is older but very comfortable. We would definitely stay there again.

  • Great location and wonderful home. Loved the funky artwork, only wish we were able to meet the owners to hear some stories. We had to book this at the last minutes, so we were grateful that the owner was so responsive and able to fit us in.

  • Unless you need servants to clean up after you, this place is the best option for spending time in Mendocino. The house, first built in the 1860s, is spacious and very comfortable. Wireless connectivity is perfect and fast. If you work on your writing or whatever project, you can spend the whole day there and take walks down to the beach, into and around the headlands and the village whenever you like. This house is one of only a small handful to have direct access to the headlands and beach. Or, within short drives, you find some of the best sites on the coast, with spectacular beaches, pygmy forests, whale travel routes, giant redwoods, and so much more. The rate is very reasonable. The kitchen has pretty much everything you might want, and you'll find more supplies and kitchen tools as you spend time. We had about twelve days here and could have stayed for another 24 without getting bored, but didn't have the time for it. This place is real in the way a B&B, hotel, or motel never will be. It's like the family just left and you step into a complete, friendly environment where every artifact, toy, picture, and piece of furniture has a fascinating story to tell.
