The Space

Welcome to the Bock House.

***We now have Comcast Xfinity internet service for extremely fast wireless internet speeds. 50 mbps download and 10 mbps upload.

Because we only cater to guest that stay 30 days or longer our house feels more like a home shared by a few friends rather than a BnB filled with weekend tourist.

Most of our guest usually are here for an internship, their sabbatical or to look for a more permanent living situation in the city. My friend Julie and I live in the house with the other rooms rented out to long term guest. We know the city well and are usually around to help figure out a place to go or how to best get there. Our two dogs are very friendly and can always lead you to the park or Sam's corner store for their treat.

We live in the Alamo Square historic district and are located just a block away from the famous Alamo Square and Painted Ladies Houses. This is almost exactly in the geographic center of the city with lots to do locally and two bus lines close by that can get you almost anywhere you need to go.

We are a fun and active house with a variety of people usually ready to explore the city or chill with a cookout in the back yard. Our home is in a traditional 3-flat Victorian style house. There are 6 bedrooms.

The house was built in 1907 and is located within the Alamo Square Historic District. The #5 bus stop is just outside the front door (go to the beach or downtown) and the #22 is just 2 blocks down the street (will go to the Mission or Upper Pac Height/Marina District). Both are 24 hour buses so you can get home any time of day or night. The famous SF bike wiggle is just a few blocks from the house. This helps get you around town with the least amount of hills.

If you have a car you can park for free on the street but after 5 p.m. it may take a little driving around to find a space. Our neighborhood is one of the last ones not to require a local parking permit which is great for our guest. The street cleaning is only once a week so you can find parking where you can leave your car for up to a week at a time. Make sure you curb your tires when parked on a hill. They will ticket you for not doing it in SF. A parking lot across the street is available for $1 an hour or $150 a month.

If you are just planning to travel around the city we recommend using public transportation, bikes or taxis and leaving your car parked. Bikes can be bought for $100 -$300 off (website hidden) and then resold when you leave for about the same price. I can help acquire or sell a bike for you if needed.

We will be glad to help advise on how to best get around and suggest good local hangouts. Divisadero St. is just 2 blocks away with plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars and the Independent for live concerts. The famous Haight St. area and Golden Gate Park are just a short walk or bike ride away. If you like Jazz music the Filmore area is right around the corner with lots of options including Yoshi's and the Boom Boom Room. If you are looking for a larger venue for live music try the The Filmore (6 blocks away) where many famous bands often play.

Everyone will have their own room with a locking door. The kitchen/living room and connected back porch are our common social area. A game of darts on the back porch or a BBQ in our backyard are common. Our two dogs are 14 yrs old and very mellow except when it is time to go to the park.

The kitchen is available for you to use any time including cookware, plates, spice rack, etc. You are welcome to keep things in the food pantry and refrigerator. Just make it your home.

There are two toilets and one shower in 3 separate rooms. So two toilets are still available when someone is in the shower. There is usually not an issue in the morning trying to take a shower since we work from home and most of our guest are not here for a typical 9-5 work schedule.

Our neighborhood has mostly Victorian style residential dwellings in a safe area with the only businesses being there to support locals. We are far enough away from downtown, the Mission and the financial district to feel safe while it's still quick and easy to reach them by bus when needed.

There are two full-size beds in this room. One is a full-size loft bed mounted to the wall with another full-size bed slide underneath on a bed frame. Like having large bunk beds but not actually connected to each other. The loft bed could be used for storage if not needed for sleeping. This room is our only one that also has a private sink in the room. The room as a flat screen tv with DirectTV including the NFL package. We also have a very fast wi-fi connection and an inkjet printer for the room if needed.

Make sure you look at the weather for the time you are coming. Our weather is not typical compared to the rest of the country. You will want a warm jacket most of July but sometimes just a t-shirt in December.

NO smoking cigarettes in the house but OK on the covered back porch or in the back yard.

A house cleaner comes once a week and can clean your room if you want for no extra charge. She does not do sheets or laundry but there is a washer and dryer in the basement. $2 for washer and no charge for dryer. We will have clean towels and bedding for you when you check in. If they need to be cleaned during your stay we will leave that up to you. If you need extra towels or bedding just let us know. There is a corner store two blocks away that will have any personal items you may need. A Lucky's and a Safeway grocery store are both with in walking distance or short bus trip. A Walgreen's drug store is also just a few blocks away.

We have fishing gear, fresh or saltwater, available for you to use. Those that fly RC planes can borrow a plane. We have electric planes for the park or sailplanes for slope flying on the coast. Camping gear is also available for your use.

Thank you,

The Bock House.

  • I stayed with a roommate at Drew's and the Boch House for six weeks in the summer for an opera program that was basically from 10-10 everyday. We didn't get to hang out much with those at the house, but it was always a relaxed environment, one that likes to give and share (I got a free pair of TOMS my first day there!), it pretty easy transport wise to get to places, and everyone in the house is very nice and considerate. I'm glad we stayed here. :)

  • Our stay at Drew's place was great. My friend and I arrived to a room that exceeded our expectations and stayed there for 3 months, it is a spacious room with bunk beds, a sink, tv and large closet. All the people we met at the Bock House were great people, we had a lot of fun and did a lot of stuff together. The Bock House is a place where you feel at home and can easily choose between being social or being private. We were very well taken care of and will recommend the Bock House to everyone we know! Even though there is only one shower it all worked out fine, under 3 months I think I had to wait for the shower once! The only thing missing in this apartment is a common room, mostly because you want the chance to spend more time with all the cool and great people you meet. But hey, it's San Francisco - there is plenty of stuff to do right outside the door! The location of the Bock House is amazing. There are plenty of buses to take you anywhere you want to go, but honestly everything is within walking distance in SF :)
Having been home for almost a week I miss amazing SF and Bock House a lot, we will be jealous of anyone who will stay there in the future! Would go back in a heartbeat if I could!

  • My friend and I stayed at the Bock House for 3 months, in a room with double bunks. The room was big, with a sofa, tv, basin,,,plenty big enough for us.

We had the most amazing time, largely due to finding ourselves in such a great location, sharing the flat with great people. We felt at home the moment we stepped through the door. The flat is really cosy and cool, in a stunning 'painted lady' house. We couldn't believe the location...just off alamo square for picnics and divisadero street for all the hip arty fun stuff a person can manage. Art galleries, cool motown dance club, dive bars, orrganic shops, yoga studios, little star pizza, and 'destination restaurants': this is all around the corner. We had so much fun on McAllister street with kindhearted Drew, wonderful Julie, fluffy Squirt the dog, and all the lovely and interesting airbnbers from all over the world. We sat in the kitchen eating pastries a lot. We went out for dinner together. Having said that, if we had wanted total indpendence that would have been fine too. The bus stops outside the flat, so it was easy to travel around through the day and night.

We are so thankful we stayed at the Bock House, it really made our trip, and we made lifelong friends. It was just impossible not to have fun in such a laid back little haven in the center of the most awesome part of SF. We left our hearts in SF, at the Bock House. We are jealous thinking about the people who will have our room next!
