Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
Bailiwick Cottage is a cozy, private cottage that looks south down Freeport (Harraseeket) Harbor in Freeport, ME. It is a 4 season accommodation that is close to Freeport shopping, Portland eating, and the Adventure Schools of LL Bean. The cottage sits approximately 50 yards from our main house, has its own parking space and patio, and offers the ability to come and go as you wish.

We have had 12 honeymoons in the cottage.

The space
This is a relatively new cottage, built in 2013/14. The interior is 280 (14'x20') square feet and is essentially an efficiency apartment with a single room serving as living, bedroom, eating, and kitchenette. There is a private bath with tub/shower and toilet. The hand-tooled copper sink in the kitchenette serves both the kitchen and the adjacent bath.

It has Heating and Air Conditioning and all new appliances. The interior is cozy/artsy/funky, yet functional with cable TV, Wi-Fi, and a blue tooth speaker for music from your iPhone or Android. The kitchenette is functional for light eating or warming up food. There is a bar size refrigerator, microwave, and an induction single "burner" cooktop.

In season, we also have an outside patio table with chairs for outside eating or reading.

The cottage stands alone and has its own parking. Come and go as you please. You can walk through the woods to the shoreline to view the clam diggers or shorebirds.

We pretty much leave you alone in your space. You come to Maine to get away, and we respect that.

The cottage sits on a dirt road, about a 1/4 mile off the "tar". Wolfe Neck Woods State Park is about a mile away and offers hiking, biking, and shore walks in summer and cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. It is great jogging and biking around us and, if you are lucky, you will see Joan Benoit-Samuelson (Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist) out on her daily run. We are 4 miles to downtown Freeport and its shopping and 10 miles to downtown Brunswick and Bowdoin College. The Portland Jetport is 25 miles away and is about a 35 minute drive. Bow Street Market offers just about everything with a Maine twist (best wine and liquor selection in the state) and will even cook lobsters for you to pick up. The "Wedding Field" and "Wedding Barn" of Wolfe Neck Farm are less than a mile away and this cottage would be a nice location if you are attending a wedding at either.

There is no public transit near the cottage. Walk to the park or to Wolfe Neck Farm. Otherwise you need a car. In winter, the road can be a little icy, so all wheel drive/4 wheel drive is recommended. In all other seasons, any kind of car works. Many people bring their bikes and enjoy great road biking.

LLBean runs great half day and full day "Adventure Tours" including kayaking, paddle board, biking, fly fishing and trap shooting in spring, summer and fall. In winter they shift to cross country skiing and snowshoeing. They also host summer concert and own the 9 hole Freeport Country Club, if you like to golf.

We are open all winter and the cottage is well heated. Bring your snowshoes or cross country skis for winter fun.

Guest access
Guests have access to the main living areas of the cottage. There is a basement, with an outside bulkhead access, that is not available for guest use.

Other things to note
There is water treatment in the basement of the cottage that backwashes about every 2 weeks at between midnight and 2 am. If you hear a noise at that time, its not bears or a moose-it is the backwash.

We allow local clammers to access the clam flats across a corner of our property near the cottage. If you see guys who look like they have been working hard come up the hill from the water, it is ok; respect the hard work they do to get steamers, fried clams and other shellfish delights to our Maine guests.

Take a Beer-Leave a Beer: We have a mixture of beer and some soda in the cottage fridge. It is an honor system: you are welcome to take, just leave something else behind when you leave. We rotate through some pretty interesting stuff (local craft brews, local craft soda pop, and some very weird coffee drinks) and our guests find it fun to both be able to have some "curated cold ones" ready for them when they arrive and to leave behind some person stash. Wicked creative!

Neighborhood highlights

We are on a quiet dirt road that is about 1/2 mile long (Birch Point Road) and the cottage is about 2/3 down the road. There are some families with small kids on the road, so drive carefully. Our general area is populated with a mixture of farms going back to the 1700s and 1800s along with some more recent builds. You will see woods, farm fields, grazing belted Galloway cattle, grazing sheep, and some pretty cocky wild turkeys. Not many deer, no moose or bears, an occasional fox, and overhead some eagles, ospreys, a heron and an occasional egret. It is Maine.
