Colorful Casita in Col. San Antonio, near Instituto Allende
In our beautiful, colonial town of San Miguel de Allende, the colorful and light-filled Casita Shelby gives you access in 15-20 minutes on foot to the Jardin (central plaza) and all points central. Located in the near-in colonia (neighborhood) of San Antonio, full of its own restaurants, galleries and convenient shops, we are a pleasant flat walk of 3 blocks to the Instituto Allende, 5 blocks to the Parque Juarez, 10 blocks to the Warren Hardy school (one of most popular Spanish schools) and 12 blocks with a slight uphill incline to the Jardin. You’ll be delighted with the wide range of cultural events---lectures and readings, plays and films, Spanish classes, music of every type, fascinating and nearly constant local fiestas, and wonderful impromptu happenings in the Jardin, all in easy walking range You’ll discover beautiful colonial churches and squares, an incredible library—one of our treasured institutions along with our renowned art schools and theatres ---and our richly colonial homes, narrow, cobblestone streets and friendly people. And you’ll find fine restaurants at all levels and of many international cuisines, exercise classes and clubs, hiking and parks, including our 250+acre botanical garden, and numerous balnearios (hot springs) on the edge of town.

The casita (guest house) and its casa principal (main house) are newly built in colonial style with warm San Miguel colors, hand-painted Mexican talavera tile work and colorful folk art. The casita has a fully-equipped kitchen with colorful dishes and full-size stove and refrig, microwave, coffeemaker, all new. The separate bedroom has a queen bed, richly-tiled bath and full closet. The living room has a gas fireplace for those cool winter evenings and a pull-out sofa bed. You’ll have two terraces, one overlooking the lush central garden, with its tiled fountain, separating the casita from the main house, plus use of the rooftop terrace overlooking the churches of San Miguel. Whole-house purified water; linens included; maid service weekly; and laundry facilities downstairs. All furnishings and appliances are new and carefully chosen for style, usefulness, and comfort.

This is an exceptional AirBNB for a couple visiting SMA. We loved everything about it. The kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and sitting area really feel as if you are in a private Mexican home with every comfort. The upstairs patio is delightful and we had dinner there twice. Muriel is a perfect host and gave us excellent advice on what to see and do. There are good restaurants within a ten minute walk and the main areas of the town are 20 minutes away. We will definitely stay here again if we return to SMA in the future.

Muriel's place is well located for walking and exploring. It's totally unique, with loads of character. Muriel was super helpful, including meeting me at 1:30 am when my shuttle was very delayed. She directed me to resources in town, and made sure I had what I needed, including giving me honey, lemon, and ginger for a sore throat. She's a wonderful, gracious hostess with a fantastic casita in a great neighborhood.

Muriel's casita was just lovely. The neighborhood was nice and quiet but close enough to walk to el centro to see the cathedrals, restaurants, and market place. Muriel was very kind and welcoming. I strongly recommend this stay!

Casita Shelby is right out of a Mexican dream! The casita is colorful and charming, equipped with everything you could need or want for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is beautiful and spacious, and Muriel stocks it with breakfast items, fruit and other bits for you to enjoy during your stay. The bed is comfortable and there is a balcony right in the bedroom with French doors that let in the morning light. The bathroom is colorfully decorated in Mexican tile and the shower is relaxing and warm. You have a patio out front for dining al fresco or just sitting and looking over the gorgeous courtyard. There is also private access to lounging chairs on the roof of the casita, providing 360 degree views of San Miguel's breathtaking scenery. The casita is in the perfect location for visiting San Miguel. Most people refer to the Jardin as the center of things, which is a 10-15 minute walk from Casita Shelby. But we found that San Miguel has so much to offer, even on the outskirts of the Jardin. Muriel's location is just a few minutes walk from Ancha de San Antonio, which is where the fun will begin for you. This also means you are a few blocks away from any busy motor or pedestrian traffic, so the streets are sleepy enough to make you feel like you have your own secluded hideaway. (Mind you, there is still plenty of noise coming from the streets – this is part of the charm of Mexico and can not be avoided!) My husband and I like to walk everywhere and didn't use taxis during out stay in San Miguel (including our walk to the bus station). We found it easy to get everywhere from Casita Shelby, and there is no place I'd rather come back to at the end of a day of exploring. The BEST thing about Casita Shelby though, is Muriel. She is a lovely woman and wonderful human being. I imagine that every person she has ever hosted says the same things about her, but I will say them again. Muriel has been in SMA for a decade and a half and has seen the city blossom. She knows everything there is to know, and wants you to enjoy the city just as much as she does. She will give you as much or as little information as you want during your stay (there are binders in the casita with a wealth of information in them already). She will also respect your privacy completely, though I recommend checking in with her to chat throughout your stay. She is a joy and really enhanced our visit 100%! You will also have a fluffy canine friend, Noalla, on the property. Noalla loves to play and if you are a dog person you will be delighted! If you're not, You have your own little dog gate at the top of the steps to the casita, preventing her from coming to visit.

The listing was spot-on accurate and the wonderful guidebook of things to do/places to go was so incredibly helpful. The Casita is the most absolutely wonderful, warm, relaxing place you could want. It's beautifully decorated, very convenient, very comfortable. Muriel took incredible pains to make sure I had everything I needed and her housekeeper, Veronica, was also very helpful. Muriel was also personally very kind- she invited me to a dinner she hosted on Easter Sunday with some friends, which goes way beyond what other hosts have done. Her friends were so warm, pleasant and delightful - I really enjoyed meeting them and am so grateful that she invited me for that wonderful dinner! I also loved having Muriel's adorable Cockapoo, Noella, to play with. If you have pets and you miss them when you travel, Noella will fill the space. All in all, it was an absolutely perfect two weeks with a very conscientious, kind, generous hostess. I very, very highly recommend Muriel and Casita Shelby as ideal places to stay in San Miguel de Allende.

This place is a gem. My partner and I stayed at the casita for four nights in March. Muriel was a wonderful host, answering all my questions, even how to get there from the airport. The casita is incredibly charming, and not far from the centro (a short ten minute stroll, if that). The only downfall is if you plan to stay in another location after your stay at Muriel's, it will seem like a dump (even if it actually isn't). The casita is really that nice. It is also very private, as it is detached from the main house. We loved hanging out in San Miguel de Allende but equally enjoyed spending time at the casita and with Noela, the dog. For those who may not be dog people, there is a gate that will easily make the space dog free. However, like the casita, Noela is all adorableness and charm - and will likely win you over. Again, Muriel is a wonderful host. She had wonderful advice and available to answer all my questions (it was also my first stay on AirBnB). My only regret was not asking her for more of her insights, especially about her town and our next destination. All in all, I would highly recommend staying at the casita. I would not hesitate to stay again- in fact, I would make it a point to stay there.

Muriel’s Colorful Casita is everything and more that a person could need for a wonderful stay in San Miguel de Allende. The casita is just as described and depicted in the photos. Not only is it a highly functional space (with plenty of hot water from the faucets), but it is artistically decorated with warm colors, interesting folk art, and beautiful tiles and sinks. The flowering plantings along the stairs and in the outdoor spaces surround you with greenery and a happy light feeling. It was so relaxing to come home to the beautiful little casita after a "hard day of shopping" and to be able to just lounge on the couch. One of the best features of the casita is how the outside walls are of glass and face east and west for morning and afternoon sun allowing the rooms to be lit entirely by natural light in the day. The couch is perfectly placed for that afternoon nap as the warm sun streams in through the window. Three outdoor patios are available to the casita renter, offering shade and sun and great views of the city. I like that the casita is located a little off the beaten path because it is a relatively quiet neighborhood but it is also only about a 12-minute walk to the main part of town making the casita accessible to activities, nice restaurants, and shops. On Saturdays you can visit the organic market about 3 blocks away. Muriel and her little doglet Noella are the most gracious of hosts. Muriel greeted me with fresh fruit and fresh-made hibiscus tea when I arrived. She is always there when you need her and offered me her help and good advice on numerous occasions. Noella is a joy; so sweet and playful. I really enjoyed meeting both of them and hope to visit again on my next trip to San Miguel.
