The Poet's Retreat is a small house unlike any other in the countryside a few miles from the small town of Locust Grove. The quiet country atmosphere is perfect for the writer or artist looking to get away for some creative time.

The space
The Poet's Retreat is a cozy, humble, very unique getaway-from-it-all place. It is on a small hill in rural Mayes County, a few miles from Locust Grove, Pryor, and Chouteau, 45 miles from Tulsa.

The retreat is an entire small house that has 4 rooms and a bathroom. There is a living room w/twin bed, kitchen, bath (with tub and shower, bedroom (Emily Dickinson room) w/twin bed, and bedroom with full-sized bed.

The living room is a comfortable space with a couch, recliner, twin bed and desk. While there is a TV, there is no cable--only local channels with a antenna connection. A DVD player and movies are also provided.

The kitchen is fully-equipped with stove, sink, frig, washer and dryer. Several different types of coffee-makers are available, along with fresh coffee beans, cream and sugar. Dishes, silverware, pots and pans are all provided. There is a charcoal grill with grilling tools outside. Bring your own charcoal.
The bathroom has a tub/shower.

The bedroom has a full-sized bed, desk, and a closet with room for clothes that is also stocked with books to read. Please note: It is a FULL-sized bed, not a queen. We DO NOT have a queen-sized bed in the house.

The Poet's Retreat is run by the Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry (ROMP), which is next door to the Retreat. ROMP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organization that exists on donations and the funds from this Poet's Retreat. You may visit it any time you want during your stay, but it certainly is not required.

Guest access
Guests can visit the Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry, which is right next door, anytime of the day or night.

Other things to note
This Retreat house is primarily designed with adults in mind and priced for creative types. It is very comfortable for 1-3 people. I cannot allow pets because of the nature of the Retreat and because there are other dogs that live on the land. There is no Internet access, though it can be accessed on smart phones. This is truly a retreat from the outside world and technology.

Also, please be aware that this is an old house in the country that no one lives in. That means a few things: It does not smell new or sanitized like a typical hotel room, creatures (mice and spiders) might appear in between when I clean and when you arrive, and there may be things that highly-sensitive people are allergic to in the house and the area, that is pasture land and fields.

None of this means that the house is not safe, clean and pleasant--but it is also not a hotel room. We do the best we can to provide a unique space for a cheap price, and we appreciate you. The house has been described as "quirky," and if you don't like quirky, you probably should look elsewhere. The photographs accurately describe each room of the house and the outside areas.

This was my grandparents' house for many many years. After that, we ran a used book store in it. Then, a relative lived in it for a while, before it became a poetry workshop space and eventually the poet's retreat. It has been lovingly used and has character and charm, but if those are qualities you would rather not have in an overnight stay, you might consider other spaces.

There is no storm shelter on the property, but the Locust Grove Pirate Arena, which is 2 miles east of the retreat, is open to the public during storms.

We designed this place as a poet's retreat, a writer's or artist's retreat, a place for creative types to get away and create at a cost that they could afford. We put it on AirBnB to make it more accessible to everyone to book and discover, but we also realize it really is not for everyone. Thank you!

This is a rural area, with some houses in the vicinity. The Retreat is surrounded by pasture and woods. The Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry is a small building next door to the retreat. If it interests you, please visit. If it doesn't, that is just fine, also! The neighbors have a very friendly dog that is not fenced. We cannot keep him away, so if a dog greeting you is a problem, you probably should not book here. We are sorry about that.

Hello! I run the Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry in a small building by the Poet's Retreat, and I live across the pasture from them. I work days as a barista at Wonder City Coffee and manage the ROMP Rummage Store in Locust Grove, write, do workshops and performances, and enjoy rural life.
