About this listing
Fall asleep to the sound of the Pacific Ocean waves after watching seals, otters, countless bird species, sunsets and even an occasional spouting whale from the hot tub. Our beautiful, light, and spacious 4 bedroom, 2 bath home has an open floor plan and lots of natural stone and wood. It is in a stunning location where the Mad River meets the Pacific Ocean, between Arcata and Trinidad. Our home is on an acre of land, with the western boundary being the middle of the Mad River. Bring your paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes; or just enjoy a picnic in the yard by the river. Walking/riding trails and beach access are within a few steps or pedals. Easy freeway access and close to all amenities. Less than 10 minutes from Humboldt State University and Mad River Hospital. Ten minutes from Blue Lake Casino and Cherae Heights Casino. Five minutes to Beau Pre Golf Course and ten minutes to ocean fishing (clams, crabs, salmon, bottom fish, etc.). Jeff even fly fishes for steelhead behind the house in the fall! This is truly a special place in the heart of redwood country! Our kids have moved on, so you can move in! Prices listed include local taxes and standard cleaning fees. Sleeps up to 10, entertaining up to 14 total (including those staying at the house). Looking forward to sharing our special place with you.

From the pictures it looked too good to be true. But in person it was even better. We had a party of seven and the accommodations could not have been more ideal. The house not only offers great views, but it is spacious, tastefully done, and there is a complete sense of solitude from the outside world. Our family is so glad it was able to stay in this great house. We were on vacation, but each of the nights we had family dinners just as if we were at home. I don't know if we will ever vacation again in this part of the state, but if we do, we can only hope the home will be available again. It was definitely the highlight of our trip.
Great experience in a beautiful and quiet location. Upon entering the house and looking out the large windows facing the river, dunes, and ocean, my first word was, "Wow". The back deck was perfect for morning meditation, as well as evening soaks in the hot tub. Each morning, we watched a family of otters swim, fish and play in the river, just steps from the property. The house has a warm, family vibe and is well equipped, except for the lack of Wifi and cell phone reception. Loved the interior woodwork, the master bath, comfy beds, spacious kitchen, and open floor plan downstairs. The neighborhood itself is somewhat unkempt, with roads and nearby properties in need of TLC (as is often the case with seaside communities exposed to the elements).
I highly recommend "Sea Sights and Soothing Sounds" to travelers seeking quiet repose, amazing views, ample space for 6 or more people, and close proximity to some of California's most stunning natural wonders. This charming home may not for those who need a large screen home theater system or fast internet connection.
We had a great time at this house during the week is our wedding. It was beautiful with an amazing view of the ocean and plenty of space for relaxing and hanging out together.
Diane was more than welcoming. The house was WAYmore than we expected. All 10 of us were really pleased.
This place made our vacation a wonderful experience! We were a group of 9 adults and kids, and the house felt spacious, comfortable, and relaxed (great place for kids upstairs and adults downstairs). Everything was absolutely perfect making it a smooth and hassle-free 4 day stay. Quick communication with Diane for questions. Very clean and well maintained interior with hardwood floors and thick carpet. Great attention to detail with well appointed kitchen, deck/grills/hot tub, laundry, bedrooms, and baths with linens and supplies. We truly felt like we were coming home after a long day of hiking in the surrounding redwood forests, and the views and surrounding gardens and yards were outstanding - making this vacation a most memorable event.
This ocean view home was both beautiful and welcoming. It was such a peaceful setting and the sunsets were spectacular. Both my children and grandchildren had a wonderful time and enjoyed walking across the Mad River to the beach beyond. There are many fun things to do within a short drive from McKinleyville and the time flew by. The kitchen was well appointed and the ten of us were very comfortable. The hot tub was a real plus. Diane Romberg has made her home a great vacation destination.
Diane's home was absolutely beautiful, from the flower garden in the front yard, to the gorgeous vista out back, and the roomy interior! She certainly made us feel welcome with fresh flowers and chocolates!! We were celebrating our son's Phd. and our children had flown in from across the country. I was nervous about my choice of home, until the kids whooped hurrah! We all loved it. The house was roomy, had everything we needed, including a piano for some memory-lane duets from my kids (glad to hear all those piano lessons paid off!). We all enjoyed sitting on the back deck or in the hot tub and watching the sun set, and wildlife on the Mad River. It was a delightful place to stay. Diane provided a book with lots of ideas of things to do and places to eat. I just wanted to get back to her home each day and enjoy the view out back!
