About This Listing
The house overlooks the Halifax Harbour and Dartmouth, which you can see from the front porch and windows! During the summer and fall, the gardens will be available to harvest. The Hydrostone Market is a short walk away, as are all major bus routes.
The room also has a desk and computer chair, as well as plenty of storage space in a closet and dresser.
I've stayed with Airbnb in three different countries and enjoyed my experience every time. Because of this, I decided to rent out a room in my own house.
My place is a 1,500 square foot post-WWII house on a hill overlooking the Halifax Harbour and Dartmouth across the straights. The main floor has hardwood floors, a large kitchen, a working fireplace with a wood stove insert, and lots of light flowing in from the east-facing front windows. It's warm and quirky, with an array of vintage furniture, mostly wood-based pieces made in the area. I also have a large selection of graphic novels in English and French for your perusal, plus a record collection that's always looking for more attention!
The room on the second floor contains a double (twin) bed, a large closet and a small desk. You also have access to unlimited wireless internet, and can use the kitchen and back patio (with BBQ and patio furniture) whenever you'd like.
The house is in the north end of Halifax, a 5-minute walk to the shops, cafés and restaurants of the Hydrostone Market and a 3-minute walk to Needham Memorial Park. It's also a 5-minute walk to two major bus routes, one going directly downtown in 10 minutes, and another going to the two university campuses in the south end (Dalhousie and Saint Mary's), before heading downtown (about 30 minutes).
I live with a great couple (man/woman) from Kentucky who are relatively new to Halifax. We enjoy having company and including you in some of our Nova Scotia adventures.
In the summer of 2014, our home received over 20 separate bookings. We always make sure the bed sheets are clean and the room has received cleaning attention before the next guest(s) arrive.

Darryl made us feel welcome and assisted us with any issues we had in a timely fashion. Great location close to both bridges and transit.
Darryl is a super knowledgeable and helpful host. He made us feel very welcome, answered all of our many questions and gave us really great suggestions. We really appreciated the time and effort that Darryl put in to help make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Thanks Darryl!
Darryl was a great host. He and his roommates, Connie and Dave, made be feel right at home at their house. Everyone was super friendly and relaxed, it felt just like staying with friends. The house doesn't look quite like the photos inside, but its a cozy house with some nice common space. The kitchen is very well-equipped, and great for cooking and chatting with folks in the house. The neighbourhood is nice and pretty quite. I would stay here again!
About the Host, Darryl
I'm originally from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, but I have lived most of my life in Ottawa. I now live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where I work as a professor of sociology at a small liberal arts university near the Atlantic ocean. I love my job; teaching is a passion of mine. My expertise is in social inequality, especially those based in national, racial and ethnic differences.
I speak French and English fluently, as well as some intermediate Spanish. I spend much of my time doing a variety of outdoor activities, including canoeing, fishing, and growing my own food. I also do quite a bit of writing and reading. I have a large collection of graphic novels, many of them in the political history genre.
I have spent several nights with Airbnb hosts in Europe, and I have hosted several guests at my home overlooking the Halifax Harbour. My house is a lovely 1950s-era two story residence. It is very cozy, with a large kitchen and extensive vegetable gardens. It has lots of natural light in a relatively quiet residential neighbourhood.
