Nestled in the field behind our house is a lovely new wooden barn. Our field is host to an ever changing collection of cows and goats throughout the year but the barn will be just for you. A private sleeping area is equipped with a full size futon, an electric space heater, lighting, radio/cd player and plenty of rustic charm. An upstairs loft holds a ping pong table and basketball hoop. Kids can also be accommodated on futons in the upstairs loft and are more than welcome! There are plenty of fun activities for them on the property and in the area. The views from the barn's deck are nothing short of spectacular. You are welcome to join us in the main house to use the kitchen and the bathroom (the barn does not have either). All linens are provided.
Our place is about 15 minutes from the town of Brandon which has several wonderful restaurants, a grocery store, and shopping. We are also about 25 minutes from the college town of Middlebury which is known for its quaint downtown and arts scene. We are nearby to Middlebury College Snowbowl for downhill skiing and Rikert Ski Center for X-Country skiing (one of two places in the state that makes snow!). We are also minutes away from Blueberry HIll Ski Center for back country skiing and snowshoeing. We can provide the snowshoes.
This space is perfect for someone looking for a rustic retreat in a beautiful part of Vermont. We will make you feel at home!
A note about winter reservations: We are more than happy to accommodate you during the winter months. The barn room is insulated but please keep in mind that temperatures in December thru February can be very low so please pack accordingly. This experience is similar to winter camping but protected from the elements!
Guests have access to the entire property and more than welcome to use the various sitting areas and our three season screened in porch.
Interaction with Guests
We are very happy to help our guests have a wonderful Vermont experience. We have many maps and guide books for hiking, skiing and biking. Please just ask and we can direct you many local swimming holes.
We are a very quiet, peaceful, rural setting with beautiful sun sets. We are located on a dirt road (about 4-5 miles from the main road) from either Middlebury or Brandon. We are host to many animals small and large and numerous birds.
There are buses from Middlebury to get to Burlington but times are limited. We would be willing to pick you up from the train in Rutland (for a fee) but once at our house it is very rural and a car is needed to get around.
Other Things to Note
Please note: We would like to know a bit about you before we accept a reservation so please have a full profile filled out including a picture. Thank you!
Please have fun and treat our home as you would want your home treated. No pets or smoking allowed in the barn or house please.
Our weekend in Goshen was one to remember! David and Rene were fantastic hosts and were very accommodating. They gave great advice about local trails, some being just a couple minutes down the road. They recommended restaurants which were not only delicious, but also affordable. Also, the location is private and allows for an awesome picture of the night sky :-) Overall, a great place owned by great people.
This was my second time staying in the barn. The view is magnificent, the sheep quietly baa-ing, and the stay as a whole...perfection! Thanks for a great getaway, David and Rene.
Our stay at Rene and David's barn was wonderful. Rene and David were kind and gracious hosts who made us feel comfortable and welcome from the moment we arrived at their beautiful home. The barn was cozy and comfortable, and the friendly goats nearby were an added bonus! I'd highly recommend staying here to anyone and we hope to come back and stay again if we're in the area another time.
I had a wonderful stay at David and Rene's barn. There is also another rental room in the main house that I did not see. David and Rene are welcoming and warm hosts and I quickly felt at home. The room in the barn is simple but clean and comfortable and perfect for the right kind of traveler. There is no bathroom in the barn and guests have use of a full bathroom in the main house. The barn is maybe a hundred feet from the main house and affords both privacy as well as magnificent views of the surrounding woods and mountains. The quiet and serene property is situated in a National Recreational Forrest and there are many outdoor activities nearby, including mountain biking, hiking, lake swimming as well as cross country and downhill skiing in the winter. The town of Middlebury is about a 20 minute drive down the mountain.
Back for a third time at the Breen's wonderful farm. This place is heaven: a peaceful mountaintop retreat with charming personal touches everywhere you look. The Breens are great hosts, attentive to guests' needs and ready to share all the must-see/must-do local attractions. I can't recommend the Breens and their farm enough.
David and Rene made us feel very welcome in their barn and home. We personally felt comfortable in their space as we interacted with them throughout our few days in the barn. Rene was willing to get on the phone with a neighbor to figure out a distillery to visit! (We went to Mad River Distillery, well worth the visit). We had a wonderful dinner and conversation with another family that was visiting the house, so it's safe to say that you'll feel very comfortable staying with them.
And the goats and sheep were fun too!
My girlfriend and I had and great time staying in David and Rene's barn. The sleeping area in the barn was clean, cozy, and provided plenty of privacy, and the view from the deck can't be beat. David and Rene are amazingly friendly and were willing to invite us into their home despite having family visiting while we were there. I would definitely stay with then again!

We have been living in Vermont for the past 30 years. We raised 4 beautiful daughters in this house and now that they are all on to other adventures we have some extra space. We love meeting new people and have traveled to many different parts of the world (often visiting our daughters who love to travel as well).
David is a retired teacher and Rene is a physical therapist. We enjoy all things related to the outdoors from collecting sap to make syrup on the wood stove to swimming and hiking and skiing the trails by our house. Please contact us for more information!
