PARKING AND DRIVING IN FLORENCE
We encourage our guests coming by car if it is really necessary, as there are many restrictions regarding parking and driving in the city. Florence is a fairly small city, where you can walk everywhere, hardly ever needing to use the public transportation or taxi services. If you are here to also travel around Tuscany, you can always use trains and buses. The offer for these are numerous and can basically take you anywhere. We are not responsible for any traffic fines that may occur during you stay.
The whole area of the historical center of Florence is part of the Unesco Heritage sites and has very strict rules about driving and parking. This area is known as ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato), which literally means Limited Traffic Zone (our apartment is in this area). Only cars with special permits are allowed to enter it. Cars without permits can expect to pay fines – starting at 100 Euros and up. The ZTL is surrounded by several ‘access passages’ which are controlled by telematic doors and marked by special signs. These access passages are equipped with devices that automatically ID the license plate of the car and send the information to a central data base.
Non residents are prohibited from driving and parking cars within the ZTL at the following times: Year round: Monday to Friday from 7,30 am to 7,30 pm; Saturdays from 7,30 am to 6 pm. Additional summer night ZTL: in addition to the times listed above, every year during summer access is prohibited as well at night from approximately the end of May until the middle of September.
In case you've by car, leave your car outside the ZTL, in one of the many parkings that surround the historical center. However, if you plan to visit the city for more than two days, it is better to buy a one-day parking pass which will give you a better deal. Some parkings, though, won’t offer daily passes, such as Santa Maria Novella parking (at the train station). Tourists that travel by car and who need to go through the ZTL to reach their accommodation or a garage can obtain a temporary access permit. In order to obtain this permit, communicate your license plate number to the garage once you find the parking that best suits you. A temporary permit will be issued for a maximum of 2 hours (for luggage transport purposes) only on arrival and departure dates. During your stay, the car has to be parked outside the ZTL or at a private garage. People holding a ‘disabled parking permit’ who have the necessity to travel with their own vehicle within the ZTL, must contact the following green number: (phone number hidden).
NOTE: There also is, public parking available in the residential areas outside of the historical center (outside ZTL) where you can park by the hour. If you are non-resident you must park on the blue lined area and pay for it during the specific hours (8am to 8pm). White lined area is for residents only and the yellow for the handicap. Make sure to go the parking meter nearby (marked with a P sign) and prepay the hours you intend to stay, then put the slip back in the car in the dashboard.
Please see the Comune di Firenze mobility & driving, and Firenze parcheggi web pages.
FREE PARKING IN FLORENCE
Outside of Florence's city center are a few parking lots that are free and strategically located off the main highways. These parking lots are connected by public transportation to Florence's historical center and can be the perfect solution if you're visiting Florence.
From this parkings you can easily reach the apartment by bus:
The parking lot is right in the famous piazza overlooking Florence. It is a small parking and generally busy. Early morning is the best time to find parking. Ponte Vecchio is a 20 minutes walk downhill while the SMN train station is a 20 minute bus ride away on the bus n. 13. You can also catch bus 12 at the Piazzale to head down (and reach the apartment).
The parking lot in Galluzzo is free. Head to the main square of Galluzzo, just two minutes walking distance from the parking lot, where you'll find a bus stop to take you into Florence. The historical center of Florence is about 10 minutes away - take bus n.36 or 37 (and reach the apartment).

It was an excellent location for us. It was close to little markets, the buses and within walking distance to all the old piazzas. Our initial impression was of a small student apartment; it was not luxurious, but it was cozy and quiet, and we came to love it. The kitchen had everything we needed and the wifi worked well. The beds were unassuming but comfortable and we slept well. The couch was relaxing. There was some information about Florence including a map.
Very pleasant stay in this apartment situated in a very quiet area, 10 minutes walk from the historic center, in the Oltrarno area.
Great timing to take possession of the apartment when we arrived.
We loved the area, small places for a drink and eat a super ice.
Well located, in the old part next to Boboli garden, excellent host, quick and responsive.
It should be noted that Italy has a strict "heating law" that prohibits heating before November. During our stay in mid-october, it was cold (about 10°C) during the night. My wife caught a cold, but Frederica kindly offered to use the small electric heater which was greatly appreciated.
If you are seeking old world charm in the heart of Florence within walking distance of all the attractions yet still offering a place to get away from the frenetic pace of the city core, this is your hideaway. Tucked into a cul de sac bordered by the fabulous 'not to be missed' Giardino di Boboli, a large and splendid public garden open by day, this studio offers a peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of the tourist attractions. Federica was lovely and patient enough to wait for us after a cab had dropped us off at the wrong location. She is fluent in English and her studio was clean. It would certainly be our home in Florence should we return to Tuscany. Mille Grazie Frederica! I hope this can be shared publicly.
I stayed in the artist's studio for two weeks in late September and it was perfect. Frederica and Ilaria are wonderful hosts and were there to greet me on arrival at their apartment. The apartment is private and light with lots of living space, large bathroom and kitchen with all you need for cooking.
The location is in a quiet street and friendly neighbours in the Oltrarno area. It is within easy walking distance to the Boboli Giardini, Palazzo Pitti, Piazza Santo Spirito and centro historico.
I highly recommend this place for short or long term vacanza in Firenze.
This flat is lovelly. We really enjoyed our experience in Florence. The apartement was very clean when we arrived, You'll find everything you need to cook. It is 10 min from the Ponte Vecchio by foot, but you have also 3 bus available next to if needed. Ilaria was very kind to us and answered every message we sent. It is also very quiet at night.
Go for it! Press the : "Book now" button :)
Fabulous apartment! Ilaria met us at the apartment, showed us around, gave us a map and great tips for restaurants etc. The apartment was perfect for our stay - nice and quiet, clean and cheerful. The location was so nice -- not in the touristy area, but a pleasant walk or bus ride to all the things you want to see. It was great to have dinner in the San Spirito neighborhood close by and visit the artisan shops in the area. Be sure to check out the lovely shared patio behind the apartment building. Also be sure to buy bus tickets before you get on and then validate it in the machine on the bus. For ease, we recommend the 24-hour bus tickets, as it is a little harder to come by the tickets near the apartment than in the city center. Highly recommend this apartment!
I spent a month in Florence taking a painting course and I stayed at Federica and Ilaria's charming Studio apartment. It is ideally located away from the crowded plazas, yet close enough to get any place in the city whether you travel by foot, bicycle or bus. The apartment has a spacious bedroom/living area, with cozy bathroom and kitchen area. Because it is on the ground floor, it stays relatively cool during July. The neighborhood has convenience stores, supermarket, a bakery, restaurants & cafes all within walking distance.
Ilaria was very helpful and accomodating, and I would consider staying again in a future visit. I highly recommend it!!
Federica's studio is in an excellent location, just a 5 minute walk from the Pitti Palace and 7 minutes to the Ponte Vecchio. All other attractions are within walking distance. There is a very good bus service that is very easy to use - and a bus stop only a couple of minutes walk away.
Federica and her family members gave very good service - meeting us when we arrived, answering all our questions and responding very quickly to one problem - when the power went off.
The studio has a lot of character - it is quite quirky - and it has all the necessities - including good WiFi connection. One minor drawback is that there was a very slight smell of damp in the studio.
