Our converted 40-foot container cabin is set on a stream and 20 acres of gorgeous mountainside wilderness. Gaze at the stars from the deck, BBQ on the grill, sit around the fire ring, stretch out on the yoga platform or read in the hammock. The cabin is two hours north of NYC and is off-grid, with solar power, a compost toilet and gravity-feed water. You can hike the Catskills out the back door. Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, Catskill and the Hudson River are 15 minutes away.

We took everything we learned building our first 20-foot container cabin (see linked listing) and incorporated it into our new 40-foot container cabin. The 40-footer is a "high cube" container, with 9-foot ceilings, a dedicated bedroom (with a door and room for a crib or luggage), a full bathroom, and a beautiful deck overlooking a stream. There is a hammock and an adjacent promontory with a fire ring, outdoor kitchen and seating. The sitting area is elevated with an L-shaped Ikea Friheten couch opposite two contiguous 5'x5' windows to stare at the forest and wildlife. The writing desk is an original Mohonk House secretary. The couch converts to a queen-size sofa bed, that we often leave out for maximum-lounge space.

Living in a container cabin is not like living in a traditional house. It's like living on a yacht in the middle of the woods. Our inspiration was to create a camping experience with the comforts of home. The 40-footer is definitely more "home-like" than our original cabin. There is 120v solar power with outlets throughout the house. That bathroom is tiled and located inside the cabin. The wood stove has a glass door with ceramic baffles, reburners and a blower for maximum heat. High-efficiency insulated walls and low-energy windows keep the cabin warm in the winter and cool in the summer. There is a refrigerator with a freezer box. The bedroom is like a nature capsule with a 7'x7' picture window at the foot of the bed and a 7'x8' sliding glass door on the south wall.

If it's cold outside (with the stove it's always warm inside) we usually leave the bed out and lounge around drinking coffee. If it's warm, we leave the double doors open and lounge around the deck.

Staying in the cabin is an experience, not a simple overnight. On a 20-degree night in the middle of a blizzard, it is 80 degrees and silent inside. There are enough pots/pans/basics to cook whatever you want. (Yes, we have a coffee grinder.) There is a grill over the fire circle and a Webber charcoal grill next to the deck. The wood stove stays warm all night if you know how to manage a fire. If you don't, you'll be up at 4am lighting it again. (We leave you firestarter to make it a bit easier.) In the summer, a breeze off the 3,100-foot mountain behind us keeps the container cool, and the sound of the waterfall will put you to sleep.

The cabin is cleaned immaculately after every stay, now using CDC disinfecting standards. Cleaning supplies are also left for guests; we ask them to wipe down surfaces and bag linens before leaving.

The cabin is set on a truly gorgeous 20-acre plot on the eastern edge of the Catskill Mountains. It feels a bit like Maine, or Alaska, with walking trails all over. You can't see any neighbors from our property, but there are neighbors, great ones. (Please be courteous and respectful to them.) We are on the side of Overlook Mountain and have tons of wildlife on the property. (Listen for the great horned owls at night!)

All guests are left with potable drinking water. There are drawers under the bed for clothes, room in the bedroom for a crib or pack-and-play, and a mudroom for jackets, shoes and backpacks. No smoking inside, please, plenty of room to smoke on the deck outside...

We have a cell signal booster in the cabin, so service/hotspot internet is good. The original 20-foot container is set on the opposite side of the property. The driveway divides the two and and each are completely private. (We designed it that way.)

Saugerties is a gem. Miss Lucy's (dinner), The Dutch (drinks), Circle W General Store (breakfast/lunch) Love Bites (breakfast) and Diamond Mills (fancy!). Walking to the lighthouse is a must, as is hiking to Kaaterskill Falls, Huckleberry Point and North and South Lakes. Hunter Mountain is also 30 minutes away. Food shopping and farm stands are 10-15 min away.

Guest access
You have the entire property on your side of the driveway. Streams, woods, cliffs and marsh.

Other things to note
The shower is a simple battery-operated camping shower that you fill with hot water. (Heat it on the stove.) Toilet is a compost toilet, simple and clean.

My wife and I are a photographer and writer from Brooklyn who split our time between the city and the Catskills. We designed our cabins and finished both of them—and continue to work on our beautiful piece of land every day...
