Had an amazing time in Barbados at Olivia's cottage. The cottage is a fantastic place and the view is priceless! Smitty made us feel welcome and was available for questions or help if needed. He picked us up from the airport and brought us straight to the grocery store so we could shop for food and supplies. There is also a smaller corner store close to the cottage. Olivia is very prompt with responses and information and checked in to make sure everything was going ok. The buses run right out in front of the cottage and make it easy to get around and of course the beach is only a few steps away. Make sure to have small Barbadian bills or coins for bus rides. If you need to take a taxi, we used a man named Harold (phone number hidden). The Lone Star hotel is a short walk away and a good reference point for pick up and drop off. We explored Gibbs and Mullins beach which are a short bus ride away. Definitely try Mullins beach bar! Holetown is also very accessible by bus or a short walk. We took an evening cruise with Tiami which was worth it - you might even end up at the beach by the cottage and swim with the turtles. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, and utensils and there’s snorkeling gear mixed in as well. Great all around experience - we hope to come back sometime!
Olivia was helpfulness and charm personified. No question was too bothersome for her to answer. Olivia called us midweek through our stay to check everything was okay, which of course it was. Sadly she only got a modicum of sense out of us as we had been living it up in a local rum shack. All of Olivia's relatives were really friendly and helpful, ladening us with mangoes, and sourcing amazing local fresh fish. The property was as described. It really does feel like you have your own private beach, with just a few people drifting past every now and again. On the mad buses that stop anywhere you want we visited a fair bit of the island. Would thoroughly recommend the Fishermans pub in Speightstown for amazingly cheap local food, and of course the John Moore rum shack!
The whole week was thoroughly relaxing, and the location so beautiful. The monkeys visited us, we saw turtles off the beach, and humming birds from the balcony.
The location had none of what I would consider the pretentiousness of Holetown, and the supermarket nearby was basic but useful.
If you do need to shop, a short trip to Speightstown will get you to the best value local supermarkets.
I fear Olivia is no longer a well kept sector, but when we return she will be our first port of call.
A massive thanks, and those who book, enjoy.
Perfect location, perfect house, perfect everything! I can't say enough about this house and area. Olivia's brother Smitty even picked us up and dropped us off at the airport and gave us lots of information about the island. The house is open and the rooms are air conditioned. The views are incredible and you can catch a bus from right outside the house to get anywhere on the island! Holetown is about a 5 minute drive away where's there's plenty of restaurants, stores, and things to do! I felt so safe and relaxed the entire week! Thank you so much!
Our return this year ( March 2014 ) is a testimony to what Olivia's cottage is. We already shared our comments on quality of accommodation in April 2013 - see our review. The stay this year has confirmed our conviction that Barbados is a paradise and staying in Olivia's cottage is like being in the first row of it, right in front of the main stage - Ocean.
One can spent 2 weeks on the deck above the beach, sipping good local rum and watching waves crashing on shore, without getting bored. There are always interesting intermissions: visiting green monkeys, numerous birds passing by, some of them attempting to feed directly of one's food plate, majestic frigates sailing above water, occasionally diving and catching fish, fisherman coming back home at the end of a day, carrying on their shoulders 120 pound bill fish, local boatmen coming on weekend to throw the net and show local way of catching tasty small reef fish ( have camera handy),cruisers and cargo ships coming to and leaving Bridgetown, all sorts of boats, some of them - "The Yachts", throwing anchors right in front of the cottage - have binoculars handy to observe lifestyle of the rich if you choose to play paparazzi for a bit.....And if sitting on a deck gets you tired then you can put the swim shorts on and jump into water to snorkel a bit, swim nearby with the turtles, or simply get your body to do some work ( not too much - after all you are on vacation ). Night skies are usually clear so you can enjoy star gazing - try to load sky-chart application on your tablet, if you carry one around, to understand exactly what you are looking at....In the morning, for a change, you can busy yourself chasing a crab or a little lizard which have gotten into the cottage through the window which you may have forgotten to close for the night - they are quick and shy so this makes it a good exercise before breakfast.
Will post next report in 2015, enjoy your stay at Olivia's....
Olivia, herself, does not live on the island, but was there for us 100%. She was so attentive to all our needs. Thanks, Olivia!
The place is just perfect. We were 4 and a baby.
I have been going to Barbados since I was little and I can honestly say I will stay no where else from now on.
Miss it already.
We just spent a month at Olivia's cottage and what a wonderful time we had. The cottage is the best spot on the island, IMHO. The ocean is perfect for swimming, snorkelling and swimming with the turtles right off the beach, a short 15 minute walk to the fish market for our fresh fish (we ate a lot of fresh fish!). Also, almost right across the street is Papa Earl's for vegetarian take out. Tamara will greet you with a smile. And beside that is a mini market which prepares great food 6 days a week. We were so comfortable it felt like we were home.
We walked to Holetown on the beach often, and if you need to shop, just hop the bus back. We loved the yellow buses which let us off right at the house.
We took the local bus to Bathsheba and had lunch at the Round House which was excellent. A great route from Speighstown to see more of the island.
Don't hesitate to stay here. Thanks Olivia.
I could rent this house for the view only. The rest is a bonus.
The house is just a few steps from the beach. Very private, too.
The house is much like in the photos. Enough space for a family with kids or two couples. Big balcony!
The house is about 20 meters from the road but no traffic noise. Olivia´s father lives next door so help is always near.
Only a minutes walk to the nearest bus stop, minimart or bar. Few minutes bus ride to Holetown.
Fantastic cottage directly on the beach where the first view in the morning is the carribean see. For a relaxing vacation Olivia's cottage is the best you can find. Absolutly raccomaded. Thanks.
We just got back from spending a week here and loved every minute. Like the other reviews say, it really feels like you've got your own private beach!
To get about we used the private buses. You can get all the way to Bridgetown for $2. You get used to the loud reggae blasting out and being on a 'normal' bus will feel boring afterwards!
We dealt with Smitty mostly. He was really friendly and a great host. If we ever come back to Barbados (I'm sure we will) we'd definitely stay here again.
