A unique property and private dining experience in the coastal forests of Japan’s Pacific coast--The Enclave.

This is a very unique accommodation experience in the forests of the Sotobo area of Chiba Prefecture.

Nestled in an enchanting forest only an hour away from the heart of Tokyo, The Enclave is a unique property and private dining experience offering a sophisticated and intimate at-home setting on the eastern coast of Chiba Prefecture’s Bousou Peninsula. In addition to the accommodations, full-course menus created and prepared by the American owner-chef (me!) are available for an additional fee and change frequently to reflect seasonal specialties, and incorporate organically grown herbs and vegetables freshly harvested from the on-site herb garden. A selection of wines is also available to complement guests’ culinary enjoyment.

Surrounded by the mysterious forests of the Boso Peninsula, about an hour from Tokyo, the “Gaikokan” is a luxurious and at-home atmosphere.

The property is located next to the heavily wooded confines of the Nakadaki Art Village community of artisans and craftsmen on the east coast of Chiba Prefecture only a 8-minute drive from the beach and is a very contemporary and spacious 230 square-meter wooden house constructed of New Zealand Lockwood timber with Australian eucalyptus flooring and New Zealand kauri wood facings throughout. The grounds feature a koi pond with a large illuminated fountain, fire pit, manicured herb gardens and landscaped chestnut, persimmon and orange trees, a covered gazebo complete with mosquito netting, a plunge pool, and high-end DEDON outdoor lounge furniture and day bed. Extensive solar-powered lighting and gas torches illuminate the grounds at night in a variety of beautiful colors and patterns, all contributing to an unparalleled Western-style atmosphere found nowhere else in Japan. There is also a fully-equipped home theater with Apple TV, Playstation VR, and just about every other conceivable form of audio-visual entertainment available for guests' entertainment.

Two separate bedrooms are available, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with a double. Both feature Sealy mattresses with Tempur mattress toppers to ensure guests enjoy the deepest, most relaxing sleep possible.

Also on the grounds is a newly-constructed doghouse, which also doubles as a children’s playhouse and adult meditation room. Fully equipped with insulated walls and hardwood floors, a Dyson bladeless fan and heater, track lighting, wall art, iPad wall mount and JBL Bluetooth speaker, oversized dog bed and doggy door, as well as a skylight for natural lighting and comfortable viewing of the gorgeous night sky, it may very well be the most luxurious canine pad in all of Japan (just look at the photos!) to help facilitate an unforgettable bonding experience with your pet and/or kids :) A large enclosed dog run is located next to allow your dog to roam freely in a safe, comfortable environment.

Food and Drink
The cuisine offered at The Enclave is an inventive blend of Asian, European and Latin American elements brought together using so-called modernist cooking methods. Ingredients are locally sourced whenever possible from nearby farms as well.

Likewise, the wine list features both bottles and wines by the glass from the US West Coast, France, South America and South Africa that have been specially selected with the food offerings in mind.

Chef Profile
Jon Sheer is a 40 year-old American and 20-year permanent resident of Japan who studied cooking at the world-renown Culinary Institute of America and was previously executive chef at Kanon, a high-end wine bar in central Tokyo. Totally bilingual in English and Japanese, he is also an internationally recognized photographer whose work has appeared in numerous publications and exhibits both in Japan and abroad.

Additional guest services such as aromatherapy are also available upon prior arrangement—please inquire at the time of booking.

Guest access
Guests have access to all areas on-premise except the kitchen and upstairs, which is off-limits.

Mountain bikes are also available for rent for 500 yen/day.

Other things to note
Please note that although the listing is for the entire home (since the Airbnb system apparently does not allow one to indicate that more than one room is available), I reside on the second floor and therefore will be present unless a mutual arrangement is made beforehand. Please also note that I do not accept requests from guests who have not filled out their profile and/or do not introduce themselves via inquiry first. Furthermore, I ask that you please diligently observe the stated check-in time of 3-5pm (barring unforeseen circumstances such as involuntary transit delays et al.) since arrivals after that point will adversely impact dinner preparation and potentially inconvenience guests staying at the other listings on the property.

Also please note that dinner is required for at least one night during the guest's stay; details will be informed separately in response to inquiries. In addition, alcoholic beverages must be purchased through the restaurant during mealtime. Similarly, in the event of dinner cancellation as a result of booking cancellation et al., please be aware that cancellations made 24 hours in advance will be subject to 50% of the dinner amount, and those made the day of, 100%. Likewise, due to restaurant public health and sanitation regulations, guests are not allowed to use the kitchen unless I am present.

Likewise, please be aware that the location is somewhat remote being a 30-minute walk from the nearest station (I will pick you up in my car if you let me know what time you will be arriving). As mentioned elsewhere, I do provide mountain bikes that will allow you to explore the area more easily in the event that you don't come by car.

With regard to to the doghouse, please inquire before sending a booking request as to availability as it is shared with the annex and ranch house listings and is reservation-only on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Lastly, although all amenities listed in Airbnb's amenity definition are provided, I do not provide toothbrushes out of consideration to the environment, so please don't forget to bring your own :)
