If an alternative experience of Hawaii is what you're seeking then this is the place for you. Come experience this cute little cabin nestled in the woods, surrounded by tall Ohia trees and lots of tropical birds to serenade you. Situated on the edge of a National Park, at 2000' elevation (which means it might get a bit chilly at times), on a very private, peaceful, gated 20 acre piece of land on the Southern most part of the Big Island. Located half way between Kona and Hilo with grocery stores and restaurants nearby, not far from the Hawaii Volcano National Park where you can view the lava going into the ocean, the famous Green Sands Beach and Punalu'u the black sand beach where you'll find Hawaiian Hawksbill turtles sunning on the sand.
The cabin has one bedroom wth a queen size bed, one bathroom with plenty of on demand hot water, a complete kitchen and is completely self sufficient and off the grid - solar power, water catchment, propane appliances. Linens, dishes, pots and pans, a blender, and a coffee press are available for your convenience. Since the only power is from the sun, no hair dryer, curling iron, or things of that nature can be used. There's a DVD player with a variety of movies for your entertainment. Most cell phones work here and will pick up the internet.
Smoking permitted outside only. Please no outside guests or visitors or pets.
Other Things to Note
Please be mindful of the time difference between Hawaii and where you are when inquiring about the cabin.
The futon couch folds out into a bed should you need it. Being at 2000' elevation, it does get a bit chilly here at times and it rains quite often.
Connie's place is delightful, as well as unusual. The setting couldn't be lovelier, well removed from busy roads and resorts and immediately adjacent to national park land. Further, thanks to Connie's artistry, the entire driveway and area surrounding the accommodations are beautifully landscaped. The independent home/apartment is comfortable, immaculate, and well furnished.
It was a pleasure to meet and chat with Connie, too, who is friendly and personable, and who clearly takes pride in her success of living "off the grid." We appreciated her communication with us both prior to and during our stay, and we definitely recommend her place to other airbnb travelers.
Peaceful rainforest is right! We loved Connie's retreat from the moment we drove in. The cabin was a perfect size with wall to wall windows making the space feel even bigger. Very comfortable/homey feeling space. It was also well stocked with items one is likely to forget while packing, i.e. lotions, bug spray, Q-Tips,etc. We missed our opportunity to visit the botanical gardens, but Connie's property surely made up for that, it's simply stunning and definitely worth a walk through. If we ever get back to the Big Island again, we're staying here!
Connie was very organized and welcoming. Her charming little cottage really is peaceful and tucked into a lush forest. The back room (kitchen/living room) is larger than we expected, and was a perfect carpeted space for our son to crawl around on.
The location is convenient for exploring the South Point area. It's just a few minutes off the highway near South Point Road (to Green Sands beach). We stayed three nights and had two full days - one for each of Green Sands and Black Sand beaches, plus a bit of exploring. This itinerary worked out great.
Just a heads up that this place is off the grid. But we had enough power and hot water for what we wanted - even to watch a movie at night. But there's no wi-fi, so if you need to catch up on emails do it before you arrive. There's also not much in the way of groceries in Naalehu, so best to stock up before. If you're up for a quaint place for a few nights, I recommend Connie's rainforest cottage.
Fantastic! Even more beautiful than the photos and Connie was wonderful. Would definitely book again!
Connie was a real sweet-heart. We felt welcomed right away! The cottage was very clean, super cozy and truly charming. We arrived late at night, so we were amazed the next morning to discover the yard! It is beautiful. (You have a national park in the back (but we havent seen a visitor during the week we were there) and the rest is just blooming flowers everywhere. We loved the privacy of the place.
There was plenty of hot water and electricity. With the location near South Point, it gives you a lot of options for things to visit. But rent a car!
Thanks a lot Connie for this wonderful stay! We can't wait to be back :)
This place may be "off the grid", but we deemed it "off the charts". Connie was a great host, even though we only interacted with her at the outset to review what to expect and what we needed to do when we left. She was always available if we needed her; but we asked her for her advice at our initial meeting and she gave us all the best info we could want. Our synopsis....do what Connie recommends for hiking and make sure you check out that little coffee "plantation" on South Point road with the perched red tractor. We were there 25 minutes and learned a lot and bought some delicious chocolate.
We enjoyed Connie's 20 acres. The 3/4 round trip walk to and from the gate was amazing every morning and every night for her beautiful landscaping, stars, and safety. We knew this place on night 1 (of 4) would be our favorite place for it's beauty, privacy and proximity to most places.
Check out Kilauea Iki trail in VNP. Great hike!
Thanks so much for the nice review. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay here. Walking the driveway is the best way to appreciate all the beauty! I hope my dog didn't bother you. Thank you, too, for leaving the cabin so nice and tidy. I really appreciate that. That's funny about the blender. Glad it worked well for you. Nice meeting you two! Happy trails!
The description already says it: peaceful and private. Isolated but beautiful place, a good place to return to after a day exploring the Island or nearby beaches. Very discrete and friendly host! 5 Stars!

I've lived in Hawaii since 1976 and have loved every minute of it. I'm semi-retired. Plants are my passion and this place shows it. I would love to share this magical piece of paradise with you.
