Welcome to the Abingdon Donkey Lodge, built in 1760. We are RIGHT ON The Creeper Trail + the South Fork of the Holston River. Your stay includes the UPSTAIRS of our majestic home. This includes 2 HUGE bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a dining area, + a big waterfront balcony--all totaling over 1200 sq. ft. (Your hosts live downstairs, so we share an entrance. There is also no kitchen or laundry access.) We're happy to accommodate up to 2 guests ages 12 and over. No pets, please. Farm tour included.

The space
Built in 1760, our home has been a courthouse, a post office, and a Civil War hospital. It was completely renovated in 2012, with extensive care to use reclaimed and repurposed materials from the 18th and 19th centuries. It's an ecclectic mixture of antiques from Appalachia and artwork and decor from Santa Fe.

We are conveniently located smack dab between Abingdon and Damascus, with easy access to restaurants, shopping, the Barter Theater, the Appalachian Trail, and Abingdon Vineyards. Walk out our front door to access The Creeper Trail and the South Fork of the Holston River.

Your hosts, Christal and Jane, live downstairs. You will have the upstairs TO YOURSELF--totaling over 1200 square feet. (The only shared space is the front door and foyer through which you'll enter our home.) Your stay includes FIVE rooms (2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a dining area), and sleeps up to 2 guests. The dining area includes a gorgeous 150 year-old table with chairs, a mini-fridge, a coffee station, an ice maker, and a water cooler. Also included is 1/4 acre of your own personal waterfront access. You'll have privacy galore here! (***Please note there is no kitchen or laundry room access. There is also no microwave in your dining area, as according to our insurance policy, this is a fire hazard.)

We provide all essential amenities including heat/AC, high-speed Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs with Amazon Fire Sticks in each bedroom, logs for the fire pit, and a charcoal grill and supplies. Compostable dishes and silverware are available upon request, too.

We can't wait to show you our beautiful farm! If you have any questions or special requests, please let us know. This is a friendly reminder that there is no kitchen or laundry access.

Our guidelines here are simple to ensure your stay (and ours, since we live downstairs) is amazing: No drugs or parties, no smoking or candles, no rearranging our furniture or storing your bikes inside our home, cross the road at the orange cones, wear shoes (closed-toed shoes required when interacting with the donkeys), and quiet hours between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM. We do require that you wear masks whenever interacting--both indoors and outdoors--with your hosts. Again, we accommodate only 2 guests. No pets.

This is a place where diversity and inclusion are celebrated. ALL are welcome here. We can't wait to meet you! For more information, find us online by Googling Abingdon Donkey Lodge.

Guest access
You will have the upstairs of our magnificent home all to yourself! Included are five rooms: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a dining area. Both bedrooms AND the dining area open to the same huge waterfront balcony. You will also have 1/4 acre of waterfront access, where you can swim, tube, kayak, have a picnic lunch, or build a fire and roast marshmallows. You will only have access to the upstairs of the house, as we live downstairs. There is no shared space except a foyer. Please note there is no kitchen or laundry access.

Other things to note
We have keyless entry so you can come and go as you please.

Cell phone service can be inconsistent unless you have Verizon wireless. Simply place your phone next to the Verizon extender (located next to the TV in the larger of the two bedrooms) for 5 minutes, and you'll have service anywhere in the house. For other providers, you can log on to our high-speed WiFi to use your smart phones and to make calls.

If you do not like pets or if you are allergic to them, you may want to reconsider booking with us. We love animals--and we have lots of them.

Once more, we care about your safety--and ours. You are required to wear masks here whenever you interact--both indoors and outdoors--with your hosts. Thank you so much for understanding this, and for helping us keep Christal's vulnerable parents safe.

Location

Abingdon, Virginia, United States

The historic Abingdon Donkey Lodge is located in the small community of Alvarado on a bustling section of The Creeper Trail. Head into Abingdon for breakfast at The Girl & the Raven, White Birch Food & Juice, or Cracker Barrel. Fly fish the day away in the South Fork of the Holston River, one of the premier trout streams in Southwest Virginia, and treat yourself to a wine tasting at Abingdon Vineyards. Bike on the Creeper Trail, hike the Appalachian Trail, kayak at South Holston Lake, or visit The Channels Nature Preserve, a secret local gem. Our favorite restaurants for lunch and dinner are Rain, 128 Pecan, Luke's Cafe, and Greeko's Cafe' and Grill, all in Abingdon. Dinner at The Tavern is a special treat! Enjoy made-from-scratch ice cream or cake at Anthony's Desserts, too.
