Welcome to the historic Abingdon Donkey Lodge, built in 1760. We are a miniature donkey sanctuary RIGHT ON The Creeper Trail+the river. Your stay includes the UPSTAIRS of our majestic home. This includes 2 HUGE bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a dining area, and a big waterfront balcony--totaling over 1200 sq. ft. (Your hosts live downstairs, so we share an entrance.) *NOTE: no kitchen or laundry access. We're happy to accommodate up to 4 guests ages 12 and over. No pets, please. *TWO parking spaces.

The space
***Thank you so much for reading our entire listing before booking, and for understanding that if you are allergic to animals, this is a farm stay--where there are lots of them (though only our two adorable kittens, Jake and Ricki, ever venture upstairs to your space.)

Built in 1760, our home has been a courthouse, a post office, and a Civil War hospital. It was completely renovated in 2012, with extensive care to use reclaimed and repurposed materials from the 18th and 19th centuries.

We are conveniently located smack dab between Abingdon and Damascus, with easy access to restaurants, shopping, the Barter Theater, the Appalachian Trail, The Damascus Brewery, and Abingdon Vineyards. Walk out our front door to access The Creeper Trail and the South Fork of the Holston River.

Your fully-vaccinated hosts, Christal and Jane, live downstairs. You will have the upstairs TO YOURSELF--totaling over 1200 square feet. (The only shared space is the front door and foyer through which you'll enter our home.) Your stay includes FIVE rooms (2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a dining area), and sleeps up to 4 guests. (***Please note guests must be 12 years of age or older.) There are TWO PARKING SPACES on the property for your use.

The dining area includes a gorgeous 150 year-old table with chairs, a mini-fridge, a coffee station, an ice maker, and a water cooler. Also included is 1/8 acre of your own personal waterfront access. (***Please note there is no kitchen or laundry room access. There is also no microwave in your dining area, as our insurance policy will not allow cooking upstairs.)

We provide all essential amenities including heat/AC, high-speed Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs with Amazon Fire Sticks in each bedroom, two buckets of logs for the fire pit (upon request), and a charcoal grill and grilling tools (please bring your own charcoal.)

We can't wait to show you our beautiful farm! If you have any questions or special requests, please let us know. This is another friendly reminder that there is no kitchen or laundry access.

Our guidelines here are simple to ensure your stay (and ours, since we live downstairs) is amazing: No drugs, guns, or parties; no smoking or candles, no rearranging of furniture or storing your bikes inside our home; cross the road at the orange cones; wear shoes outside (closed-toed shoes required when interacting with the donkeys); and quiet hours between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM. You can enter or leave our property anytime you want; we just ask that you are mindful of noise during those times especially, as your hosts go to bed and wake up with the chickens. Again, we accommodate up to 4 guests--and all guests must be over 12 years of age. No pets.

Please give us a 24-hour notice when scheduling your farm tour with us. Christal and Jane both work full-time jobs from home that keep us busy during the day. Right now we are doing most of our summer tours at 8:00 PM to avoid the heat.

This is a place where diversity and inclusion are celebrated. ALL are welcome here. We can't wait to meet you!

For more information, find us online by searching for Abingdon Donkey Lodge. We also have a 1957 Greyhound bus turned tiny house on the other end of our property that we rent out as well to a maximum of two guests. We call her BAB, the Big-Ass Bus.

Where you’ll be

Abingdon, Virginia, United States

The historic Abingdon Donkey Lodge is located in the small community of Alvarado on a bustling section of The Creeper Trail. Head into Abingdon for breakfast at The Girl & the Raven, White Birch Food & Juice, or Cracker Barrel. Fly fish the day away in the South Fork of the Holston River, one of the premier trout streams in Southwest Virginia, and treat yourself to a wine tasting at Abingdon Vineyards. Bike on the Creeper Trail, hike the Appalachian Trail, kayak at South Holston Lake, or visit The Channels Nature Preserve, a secret local gem. The stars here are AMAZING, as we're far from the city lights. And our front yard has a perfect open area where you can stargaze. Our favorite restaurants for lunch and dinner are Rain, 128 Pecan, Luke's Cafe, and Greeko's Cafe' and Grill, all in Abingdon. Dinner at The Tavern is a special treat! Enjoy made-from-scratch ice cream or cake at Anthony's Desserts, too.
