Extra spacious

Guests love this home’s spaciousness for a comfortable stay.
Welcome to the historic Abingdon Donkey Lodge, a farm stay on the Creeper Trail. We're waterfront too, and have sweet, fuzzy donkeys to pet. Your stay includes the upstairs of our beautiful home: 2 huge bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a dining area, and a balcony. (Your hosts live downstairs, so we share an entrance.) No kitchen or laundry access. We host up to 2 guests ages 12 and over. No pets, please. Two parking spaces. Please read all details before booking. Cats may visit you. NO CLEANING FEE.

The space
***If you are allergic to cats, please reconsider booking with us. We have SIX precocious felines who will certainly visit you during your stay.

***Also, thank you for understanding that we no longer host NASCAR guests. Races are often over in the middle of the night--and we are light sleepers.

If you like history (our home was once a Civil War hospital), sweet, fuzzy donkeys, and peaceful mountain rivers, we're the place for you! Our home was built in 1760 as a one-room log cabin, and then enlarged in 1830 to become a traditional farmhouse. It was completely renovated in 2012 with high-end amenities, and with great care to use reclaimed and repurposed materials from the 18th and 19th centuries. We are waterfront, with views of the South Fork of the Holston River out your bedroom windows. From your balcony, you'll have mountain views too.

Your stay includes the upstairs of our home (we live downstairs), which includes 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one has a shower and the other a jacuzzi bath/shower), a dining area (with mini-fridge, coffee station, water filter, and ice maker), and a huge waterfront balcony. Your area is around 1250 square feet, and the only thing you'll share with your hosts is a front door and foyer. ***Please note that there is no kitchen or laundry room access. Furthermore, there is no microwave in your dining area, as we do not allow cooking upstairs.

We provide all essential amenities including heat/AC, high-speed Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with Amazon Fire Sticks in each bedroom. You also have access to a shared outdoor waterfront space including fire pits. (Please bring your own firewood and starter supplies.)

Your hosts are Christal and Jane. Thank you so much for understanding that the vibe here is one of diversity and inclusion.

***For more information, find us online by searching for Abingdon Donkey Lodge. We also have a 1957 Greyhound bus-turned-tiny- house on the other end of our property (approximately 50 yards from the house) that we rent out to a maximum of two guests. We call her BAB, the Big-Ass Bus. She is available seasonally.

We can't wait to meet you!

Guest access
Unless you are traveling by bike or by foot on The Creeper Trail, all travel here requires an automobile. We provide TWO parking spaces in our driveway.

Other things to note
We have keyless entry so you can come and go as you please.

Cell phone service can be inconsistent unless you have Verizon wireless. For other providers, you can log on to our high-speed WiFi to use your smart phones and to make calls. It is wise to write down the door code before you arrive here in the event that you have no cell service in our area.

Neighborhood highlights

The historic Abingdon Donkey Lodge is located in the small community of Alvarado on a bustling section of The Creeper Trail. Head into Abingdon for breakfast at The Girl & the Raven, White Birch Food & Juice, or Cracker Barrel. Fly fish the day away in the South Fork of the Holston River, one of the premier trout streams in Southwest Virginia, and treat yourself to a wine tasting at Abingdon Vineyards. Bike on the Creeper Trail, hike the Appalachian Trail, kayak at South Holston Lake, or visit The Channels Nature Preserve, a secret local gem. The stars here are AMAZING, as we're far from the city lights. And our front yard has a perfect open area where you can stargaze. Our favorite restaurants for lunch and dinner are Rain, 128 Pecan, The Girl & the Raven, Luke's Cafe, and Greeko's Cafe' and Grill, all in Abingdon. Dinner at The Tavern is a special treat! Enjoy made-from-scratch ice cream or cake at Anthony's Desserts, too.
