  • Great host, easy going. Her emails outline everything you could possibly want to do or need on the island.
Be aware that the area is far from the main city so a car is essential.

  • Just awesome! The photos are good but it's even more amazing in person. Plenty of the other houses in the area are kind of average but this one has a back yard lava field.

Don't expect to hear the ocean at night but the sound of the frogs is amazing. The one night that was really clear the view of stars out the bedroom window was priceless.

Over all the house is really comfortable and really relaxing. My girlfriend and I love to cook and really enjoyed going to the markets in Pahoa. There is a great place called localvore for awesome fresh and funky produce. Then there is the Island Natural Market pretty much like a little whole foods and really about the price as San Francisco. The kitchen is big, airy, and well stocked for cooking.

The little cabana outside is really great. We both enjoyed some morning yoga out there and late night laying in the hammock.

This place could be really comfortable for a fun and close group. We traveled from here to tidal pools and Kilauea and thought it was a great location. It's about an hour to the volcano, 25 minutes to the tidal pools, and 15 minutes or less to town.

Also if you're in town there is this funky Wednesday night market with great food right down the road from the house. It's called Uncle Roberts.

I would probably stay here again and would encourage you to do so too!

  • I really enjoyed my stay at Lisa's. I knew I had made a good decision the moment I drove up. The house is beautiful, peaceful, and very private. It was also very clean and well appointed. I settled in immediately and soon had the feeling of living in my own house as opposed to being a guest. The kitchen is fantastic with a wonderful stove and all the counter space you could possibly want. The local famers markets made cooking fresh local food really easy. The bedroom is private with views of the lava flows, trees and flowers. The bed was extremely comfortable and I found the sounds of the Coqui frogs and the gold dust Geckos at night to be soothing. The area near the house is indescribably beautiful and the road along the coastline is quite honestly one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. I had a great time getting up early, driving 10 minutes down the road and watching the sunrise. I enjoyed the local community and felt less like a tourist here than I have in other areas of the Hawaiian islands. The drive into the closest town of Pahoa where you can purchase anything you may need takes about 25 minutes, but you won't mind as the drive is so pretty. Don't let your initial impression of Pahoa put you off. The town has many hidden treasure including the wonderful Tin shack bakery and several fine restaurants including Thai, Mexican, etc. The SPACE market on Saturday morning is only a five minute walk away. There are other local farmers markets on Wednesdays and Sundays. Don't miss the Wednesday night community gathering/market/dinner party with live music at Uncle Roberts in Kehena. Swimming, snorkeling, surfing are nearby. Hilo and it's attractions are less than an hour away. I really can't recommend this area of the big island highly enough. It is truly old Hawaii in the Puna district. Don't believe anything you hear about the locals not liking outsiders as my wife and I found them to be very friendly and generous.

  • Staying at Lisa's house was wonderful. Quiet, beautiful, plenty of towels and wonderful nature all around. We sat out on the lanai, had a beer and watched the sunset and the moon and stars rise the first night. We slept so well with sounds of nature all around us, screened large windows, and doors all over the house open, absolutely lovely! I woke up to the sound of birds and the sweet smell of nature with dawn. The mattress was great, and the house was simultaneously cozy/comfortable and spacious with all the air and light you could want. The loft with an extra sleeping space we dubbed the napping loft- warm with fresh air and cozy. We had several gold dust day geckos that we loved to watch and kept us company on the lanai and in the house. Great kitchen, well equipped. About 15 minutes outside Pahoa, where there is a great natural grocery store, and some great places to eat. Just a little down the road from the house is a black sand beach (Kehena), not too far from Kapoho Tide pools-(get there before 10 if possible- you might have them to yourself) and the drive along that coast is astonishingly beautiful, lush jungle, small farms, and lava flow of different ages. We felt perfectly situated to explore. We saw loads of rainbows, and the rain we did have while there was that amazing tropical rain- one big rain cloud that would pour down on one side of the house, then the other and continue on it's way and the sun would shine at the same time as it rained, perfect rainbow conditions. Lisa was great and checked in to make sure everything was going well. It was a gift to stay there, we hope to come back again at some point soon! Thank you, Lisa for opening your lovely house to us!

  • What can I say but come stay here!

The house is beautiful and spacious - bigger even than the photos make it appear. It sits on the edge of a gorgeous (older, safe) lava field and that's the view you'll wake up to every morning. It is nicely furnished and the kitchen is well appointed. As one previous reviewer noted, it is a little under an hour from the airport and Hilo. It is, however, in one of the most beautiful parts of the island - one that I've gladly returned to on each of my past few trips. As long as you aren't expecting to be a stone's through from Hilo, you'll be thrilled with your choice.

  • The house is very beautiful. It is, however, located in a remote part of the island - 20 minutes from Pahoa, the nearest town, and close to an hour from the airport. There is no cellular connectivity at the house and the house phone only accepts incoming calls. Lisa lives in Santa Fe, but her sone lives two doors down and is very responsive in case of issues.

  • The house was lovely. The peaceful energy that we soaked up on the back deck and yard was priceless. We loved that part of the island!

  • Lisa's house is, on the whole, a great little place for exploring the southeast side of the big island.

    ---Things we loved---

Location: For exploring the southeast side of the island it's really a great location - right along the main road of a few great attractions. Some of the things we enjoyed most down there were the black sand beach, tide pools, lava heated swimming areas and the Champagne Ponds. It's ~30-40 minutes south of Hilo and the main road leading to Volcano National park, but a very easy day trip to the volcano if that's what you're looking for.

View: awesome, secluded area looking out onto your own lava field with the ocean in the distance. The hammock and gazebo were a great place to read in the morning and enjoy breakfast

    ---Things to improve---

It's worth noting that the house has more of a 'cottage' feeling to it. I haven't stayed in other places on the east side of the island so I can't compare, but it felt more like a country cottage in the details and finish. The bed was okay, but the frame wasn't very sturdy. Lastly, there weren't any blinds in the bathroom or the main bedroom... this is fine during the day, but at night is a little weird - the two rooms look out onto a barren lava field, so there shouldn't be anybody out there looking in, but I had a tough time convincing my wife of that. Adding some blinds to those rooms would be a great improvement!

Overall a beautiful part of the world and an enjoyable stay. I would recommend it if you're looking for something on the east side of the big island.

  • We had so much fun staying at the Pu'ulena house over our honeymoon. We stayed at resorts most of the time, but enjoyed our 2 days here near Hilo. It was really quiet and nice to make dinners in for some rest and relaxation. We loved the design/style of the home. Beautiful views from the windows in the bedroom and a nice big deck. Lisa send detailed directions, things to see in the area and how to navigate around the house - that was much appreciated! The house is a bit of a drive from Hilo, but we enjoyed exploring along the way. Thanks for the great stay!!

  • This is an absolutely beautiful house!! We just loved staying here and wished we had made our stay longer. The craftsmanship of the house is incredible and Lisa has the house stocked with everything you might need. I especially love the beautiful view out of the window in the shower. What a wonderful treat to wake up in the morning and take a shower while looking at a beautiful view. The bed was also really comfortable... great mattress.

Friendly and helpful, I will do my best to be sure you are comfortable during your stay at Pu'ulena House on the Big Island of Hawaii, or at Canyon Road in Santa Fe. I split my time between the two places. My creative expression is seen in all the spaces listed. I use airbnb often when i travel (Los Angeles, San Miguel de Allende, Tucson,...) and can relate to the needs of a traveler. While in Hawaii I enjoy swimming in tide pools and in the open ocean. Painting and drawing the human figure is another passion. I designed, built and decorated Pu'ulena House and hope to try my hand at it once more in this lifetime! In Hawaii, I served on the board of Kalapana Sea View Estates for several years and was instrumental in the development of the neighborhood park, pavilion and tree plantings. I love life and the people in it.
