About This Listing
Looking for a quirky & stylish place to stay in Essaouira? Look no further! Dar Moulay is safe and fun and offers great value for money. The apartment's central location, yet quiet, sun drenched charming interior make it an ideal vacation hideout.
Dar Moulay is located in what is considered by some historians as the oldest building of Essaouira's UNESCO world heritage medina. The Jewish origin of the building and the apartment is apparent through large outward facing windows and typical wooden ceilings. This is the part of the old town/Medina where consulates and rich merchants used to live side by side. You are at the very centre of town, at the crossroad of the harbor, markets and residential areas. Step down and you are literally next to the main Moulay Hassan Square with it's charming cafés (the best, Ginger Café, is just across the road), bookstores and galleries. A mere 5 minutes stroll to the beach..
The apartment itself oozes charm and receives plenty of direct sunlight. The living room has a daybed/lounge area and is open to the kitchen. Bathroom and kitchen are well equipped and comfortable to use. Despite its unbeatable central location the apartment is very quiet but for the occasional call for prayer which adds a lot of atmosphere.
If you wish and for a small fee of €10/day Aisha, the house keeper is not only discreet and efficient but also a fabulous cook and fun shopping companion.
“It’s the kind of place one first hears about in a yoga class, discussed in heated whispers between sun salutations. About 10 years ago that place might have been Tulum, Mexico, but these days it's Essaouira, a tiny white-walled port city on Morocco's Atlantic coast.” - New York Times
Guests have of course full access to the entire apartment.
Interaction with Guests
We love Essaouira and have been coming here regularly for 15 years with friends and family. Since 2010 we enjoy hosting and sharing our knowledge of the city with Airbnb guests.
The Kasbah of the medina is the best area to be in as you are ver close to the main square, its cafes, galleries and antique shops yet only a 5 minute stroll away from the beach. It is quite atmospheric!
Other Things to Note
Please be advised that we charge Dh100 for check-in after 7pm and until maximum midnight. Thank you for your understanding.
Common sense rules here. Please be careful when opening the Thuya wood cupboard in the main bedroom. Feel fee to use the books but please leave them upon departure. Also, this being a muslim country, we'd appreciate if you keep the music down past 10pm.
Within minutes of arriving at the apartment, we felt at home. Prior to our arrival, communications with the host, Matthias had been excellent and our welcome by Aisha (although we did not use her service during our stay) was equally charming.
The flat is spacious, authentically stylish and well furnished. Beds, chairs and the cushioned sitting area were all very comfortable and the apartment well stocked with everyday essentials and guides/book and games. The home is very quiet, clean and has a great view from the roof terrace. Its location in a cool alley in the medina is perfect, so close to cafes, the port and places of interest (such a pity that the Ginger café opposite is closed but wifi and good coffee available in many cafes nearby). Essaouira is a lovely coastal town and a bonus for us was the Gnaoua music festival, the main part held in Moulay Hassan Square, just around the corner from the flat. We will be back!
Amazing apartment in the perfect spot in Essaouira. Nice and close to the beach and the insane port whilst still being in the medina and close to plenty of great woodwork and other shops all full of friendly and easy going (well, compared to Marrakech anyway) shopkeepers.
We found the apartment in perfect condition, exactly as described and although we didn't take her up on her offer, it was nice to know that there was a local we could call on for help if needed.
Next time we visit Essaouria, we'll definitely be staying here again.
We stayed for a week as a couple looking for a place to relax.
The flat and Aisha made the trip so authentic. The flat is very spacious and airy, perfect for chilling. Surprising to find it in the middle of narrow busy old town.
Aisha made us feel very welcome, was really helpful and amazing. She told us all the right prices when we were shopping, taught us how to cook tagine and helped to arrange authentic public hamman experience. We would have never experienced real Essaouira without her and the apartment.
It is a great way to disconnect from the world if that's what you are looking for. There was no wifi near the apartment as Cafe Ginger was closed during our stay. There is almost no mobile reception in the flat - only if you keep it still near one window for 5 minutes then can get slow internet or send a text. I had some work to finish so went to quiet Cafe Desdemona with my laptop to use wifi - nice separation of work and office. Great place to let go of my email addiction. And to stop wearing a watch too. :)
Communication with Matthias was great - always got replies within a day.
After traveling for almost 12 hours Aisha gave us a warm welcome with a home cooked dinner (tagine), fantastic! She also took care of some basic groceries and always came within 15 minutes when we needed something, really sweet.
The apartment is just as described: cosy, clean and very central in the middle of the old medina. The kitchen is simple but sufficient if you eat out a lot at one of the many nice terraces and restaurants.
Because of the early time of the year (end february) we had to use the heating in the evening, but I can imagine that the apartment is nice and cool during the summer.
Thank you Matthias for the extensive description and tips regarding Essaouira, very helpful!
