Cool apartment in best location!

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Rue Ibn Rochd, Essaouira, Marrakesh-Tensift-Al Haouz, Morocco

The Space

IMPORTANT: So as to ensure a high quality experience we have unfortunately had to cancel the last 2 reservations in order to do maintenance work which will finalize early April 2014. Expect Dar Moulay to be even more gorgeous!

Looking for a quirky & stylish place to stay in Essaouira? Look no further! Dar Moulay is safe and fun and offers great value for money. The apartment's central location, yet quiet, sun drenched interior make it an ideal vacation hideout.

Dar Moulay is located in what is considered by some historians as the oldest building of Essaouira's UNESCO world heritage medina. The Jewish origin of the building and the apartment is apparent through large outward facing windows and typical wooden ceilings. This is the part of the old town/Medina where consulates and rich merchants used to live side by side. You are at the very centre of town, at the crossroad of the harbor, markets and residential areas. Step down and you are literally next to the main Moulay Hassan Square with it's charming cafés (the best, Ginger Café, is just across the road), bookstores and galleries. A mere 5 minutes stroll to the beach..

The apartment itself oozes charm and receives plenty of direct sunlight. The living room has a daybed/lounge area and is open to the kitchen. Bathroom and kitchen are well equipped and comfortable to use. Despite its unbeatable central location the apartment is very quiet but for the occasional call for prayer which adds a lot of atmosphere.

If you wish and for a small fee of €10/day Aisha, the house keeper is not only discreet and efficient but also a fabulous cook and fun shopping companion.

“It’s the kind of place one first hears about in a yoga class, discussed in heated whispers between sun salutations. About 10 years ago that place might have been Tulum, Mexico, but these days it's Essaouira, a tiny white-walled port city on Morocco's Atlantic coast.” - New York Times

Guest Access

Guests have of course full access to the entire apartment.

Interaction with Guests

We love Essaouira and have been coming here regularly for 15 years with friends and family. Since 2010 we enjoy hosting and sharing our knowledge of the city with Airbnb guests.

The Neighborhood

The Kasbah of the medina is the best area to be in as you are ver close to the main square, its cafes, galleries and antique shops yet only a 5 minute stroll away from the beach. It is quite atmospheric!

  • The apartment is in a perfect location in the Medina (old town) of Essaouira, right near the main square next to the port and no more than 2 minutes from the Main Street of the Medina. Check in and check out were flawless thanks to Aisha (housekeeper) and Chele at Ginger Cafe, which is conveniently across the street. Be sure to visit Ginger during your stay in the apartment - helpful tips, welcoming atmosphere, and fantastic organic food and drink.
The apartment itself had everything we needed and the photos are pretty accurate. We're a couple in our mid-20s traveling Europe and North Africa for 5 months, so we wanted a place to cook occasionally (3 burner stove that uses gas bottles), store food, sleep in comfortable beds, and relax with our books when we didn't want to be out exploring. All while staying on a relatively tight budget. Matthias's apartment met all these needs with comfort and style. Not to be underestimated in navigating a new town / country was Matthias's exceptionally helpful letter (hardcopy and via airbnb reservation confirmation) about the apartment and Essaouira itself. We can vouch for all his restaurant recommendations and recommendation of hammam. This was truly a magnificent resource as it seemed to unlock more of Essaouira to us than most of the other travellers we met had experienced.
Things to note that may not be obvious from the apartment description: 1) the call to prayer and sea gulls in the early morning (5-6am) are loud and closing the windows doesn't really keep those sounds out (but they do keep just about all other noise out). However, I don't think you can escape these two things if you choose to stay anywhere in the Medina. 2) the apartment itself does not have wifi, but the friendly folks at Ginger Cafe have free wifi for you to use. You can pick up the wifi just inside the door to the apartment building or by sitting on the steps in front of the cafe when the cafe is closed. We didn't have an issue with this, but it may be a problem for some.
Compared to other private apartments on Essaouira Matthias's place is a clear winner and is no doubt far better value than the various riads in town if you are a budget conscious traveller. We stayed in November 2013 and would stay here again without hesitation. Thanks Matthias!

  • We had a very pleasant stay in this apartment. We liked the day bed/lounge area the most. Perfect for a relaxed night 'at home' or reading a book. Matthias was really easy to communicate with via e-mail. He left a very helpful note with recommendations. Ginger's cafe on the other side of the street is very good for a good coffee, several morning juices and wifi.

  • We (me, my wife and my 12 year old son) stayed in Matthias' apartment in October 2013. The location couldn't be more central and the apartment is actually more spacious than what appears from the photos. It easily sleeps 4-5 persons (though the beds are relatively narrow). The roof terrace on the photos isn't really part of the apartment and not very inviting but if you are looking for panoramic view, the Taros roof terrace bar is just round the corner. We strongly recommend that you make use of Aisha's cooking skills - her tajine with olives and lemon was probably the best meal we had during a week in Essaouira. We didn't meet Matthias but he responded quickly to all our e-mails and Chele in the bar across the street was also very helpful with advice and assistance.

  • We had a great time staying at Matthias' apartment. It's in an excellent location within the medina close to the fish markets and main square. The apartment has everything you need for your stay and is very tastefully decorated. Matthias is quick to respond to any questions and the girls across the road in Ginger cafe are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend Ashias cooking, one of our best meals of the whole trip. Thanks again Matthias...

  • The apartment in Essaouira was absolutely beautiful. A special experience is standing on top of the building and watching the city at night. Matthias left a detailed description on everything concerning it and the city. Contact went only via email, but it was easy and very nice.

  • Very nice apartment, a traditional house with a modern decoration. The location is great.

  • It's a very nice, clean and comfortable apartment in the middle of the old city, yet in a relaxed side street. Matthias, like me, likes to have a clear correspondence and was easy to contact and quick response.

Just had to get used to the morning praying the first day from the near mosque ;)
