The Space

Airy hidingplace for lovers! Absolute insider's tip for non-smoking individual travellers. Do you love the exceptional? Europe's longest (10km) sand beach at five minutes footwalk. Biggest supermarket next door. Magic well-being climate. Almost always sunshine. Even in the middle of "winter" still 18°C at midday most of the days.

Moderate prices for eating out in El Portil. Many, many fingerlicking good, cheap restaurants offering every Spanish dish you may ask for - most probably fresh fish of the day?

"El menu del dia" at noon during week-days, including 3 courses and a glass of coke, wine or beer is offered almost anywhere and usually costs 8 Euros (in 2013). (Dessert may be changed into another drink at many places.)

Top-modern Golf court (inaugurated begin of this century) at 2km distance in Nuevo Portil. Yacht harbour close. Several different golf courts to choose from, not too far.

El Portil has almost no German or English speaking tourists at all. Next hotel 4km (next hotel 8km).

* Sun-colour-styled studio with original paintings.
* Natural air-condition:
* airy 3rd floor with windows in 3 directions
* Very well-kept garden
* Very well-kept swimming pool (open high season, only!).
* South-terrace showing to the sea.
* Big glass doors cover the entire front & make flat super light.
* The two lifts can't be heard.
The pine-trees have grown a bit too fast, however, so you can only see a tiny little bĭt of the sea, nowadays. Your one-room-studio is on the 3rd floor and is definitely one of the very best in the whole building: Very, very light and airy, never too hot. When neighbours suffer from the heat in the middle of August, although using air condition, still having to open their apartment doors, in this apartment, you would not even think of any air condition, because there is always a natural light and fresh sea breeze, due to windows in three directions.

This estate is (email hidden), most owners (98% of them are Spanish) coming during the weekends only or during July/August. Nevertheless, there are some very nice people who live there for good. So it will never be top-quiet, there. Spanish people are no whisperers!

The road separating the urbanization from the beach area is 120m away.
Pulsatile life! Those needing noiselessness in their holidays: better consider some of the calm places in the Italian Toscana region or Luneburg Heath in Germany.

All the shops are within walking distance, the biggest supermarket being right next door. A super, typically Andalusian restaurant (As de Oro) is only just around the corner. There, between 1 pm and 3.00 the "menu del día" is recommendable: simply gorgeous! Sometimes, even paella will be served as a first dish. I can highly recommend fish in any offered preparation: the boss always buys the best of fish, only.

Good restaurants can be found all over the place with usually very good value for your money. If you want to eat on the beach, during the summer, there are several good possibilities at different price categories (watch out: the more expensive ones usually tell you the fish-price for 100g of fish, only!). Driving a few kilometres in the direction of Portugal, you will find other most delicious specialties in restaurants on the beach, open throughout the year.

In Punta Umbria, about 8 km from El Portil, you will find a tourist office with lots and lots of information in English. The tourist office in Huelva (20km) even offers them in French and German. Beware, husbands ;-))): Huelva is good for shopping.
You can buy quite cute fashion objects at reasonable prices - and most creative shoes, too!

Sevilla, 100km away, is a cultural must with its stunning old architecture, artdeco and moorish influences. Watch out, though, you might be robbed, even taxi-drivers may drive off with your luggage. My son was never mugged in several months, though.

Portugal's famous Algarve is only 60km away.

Absolutely unforgettable in El Portil: (Full-?)moonwalks on the beach. Don't forget to really take them! Here, it is not dangerous at all, nothing ever (email hidden). You might only disturb fishermen or smugglers during their work?

Official statistics of El Portil: 3.000 hours of sunshine per year, 185 days suitable for bathing, 19° everage temperature!

Climate: in the winter, comparable to the Canary Islands, in the summer much hotter than Teneriffa, La Gomera, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma!

Try Ryanair as a very low-priced airway. Even if there should be no direct flight to Faro or Jerez de la Frontera, you may still save a lot of money paying for an extra stop. Only disadvantage: you must keep strictly to the rules.

In any case, I would advise hiring a car (although just in front of the building there is a bus stop). Buses may go rather frequently in July and August, but during siesta time,
(2.00 pm - 5.00 p.m) even the buses take a nap...

Parking for free on the near-by market place,
Twice a week, when market is held,
you need to park your car elsewhere
(days and hours are shown outside),
otherwise they will tow you off...!

  • We spent ten days at El Portil, in Ulli´s house. El Portil is plenty of spanish people doing is regular life. The localitation is wonderfull in order to know La Costa de la Luz, beacuase is very close to Portugal and Doñana, very beautifull places around.

    The apartment is simple but it has all necesary to enjoy the beach, relax, travel, what ever you want! And Ulli and her neighbour Custodia were very kind and helpful.

Looking forward to meeting you! I've always found that people who travel are far more relaxed and unconventional than others, more flexible, more open-minded and understanding. As travellers are usually curious about other ways of living, it is more interesting to talk to them, too - more interesting than talking to people who may think they know all about Life - and stay in their gardens all the time? (All these prejudices being confirmed each & every day... ;-))))) I love hosting airbnb guests. There is almost nothing in this world I would change it for. And I love to share all the very beautiful things about Munich, communicating about what not to miss when and where, preferably the non-commercial ones! Plus the things which, in tourist's worlwide view, should no way be missed, as well culturally as culinarily? Some of this information about semi-private locations cannot be found in any official guides. And I will tell you my thoughts about the very, very dark times in the Munich history, too - if you should be interested in hearing about them? A few guests came several times, already, even friendship arose. Isn't that wonderful? Thank you, airbnb! GREAT YOU EXIST! I was a psychologist before retiring and have always been an artist, too. Apart from Spain I spent some time in London, Paris, Berne and Hamburg, so I speak more than just Spanish - in fact I speak a few foreign languages fluently. There is one thing I learnt from the Germans, and now, I have come to even LOVE it: They will never be "polite", but tell you straight forward what they like and what they don't like. After living for so long in Germany, I can only say: This makes things so easy! There is a proverb, saying: In Rome, do as the Romans do. PLEASE BE "GERMANS" WHILE HERE! PLEASE don't rely on me being clairvoyant! Tell me rightaway what you don't like. Most things can be changed so easily. Please do tell me, too, IMMMEDIATELY, if sth in my description is not right or outdated - or if I forgot to mention sth.? I will do my very best to improve, but for improving, first I need to know WHAT! I simply want my overall 5 star rating back which I had kept for so long? Would you please help me with this? It should be easy if you TOLD ME (even before telling airbnb?). THANK YOU! Ulli
