On December 11, 2009, The New York Times recommends Balcones at Majagual and shows this home as a great example of the retirement lifestyle available in Nicaragua. Try life here in the slow lane for a week or two. Wiggle your toes in the sand. Step out of bed each morning onto exotic hardwood and hand-fired tile floors. Count the monkeys and parrots during breakfast, eat lunch under a palapa on the beach and grill your catch-of-the-day for your dinner table.

Experience ecoresort living in an ecological reserve teeming with wildlife and natural beauty. This small, private retreat has been custom designed using green building concepts, native hardwoods and stone. High ceilings and large overhangs provide shade from sun and rain showers. • Absolutely Perfect! I highly recommend this place and our entire group wants to visit again in the rainy season. Gabby was very helpful in showing us around and making arrangements for us. You definitely need a 4x4 to get there and the beach is really just a 20 min walk down the hill... it's also virtually private. A family of monkey's came by to visit most days and there was lots of other exotic wildlife too. We made a lot of meals in that great kitchen and we're in and out of the pool everyday... the bees and bats were not a problem for us. I cannot say enough great things about this property. It was everything we were looking for and we can't wait to visit again!

  • Staying at Casa Tranquila was an absolutely wonderful experience. The house is secluded and surrounded by wildlife, but you still have access to fast internet and other modern day services. I guess the best way to put it, is that it is true "glamping." You can easily walk (about 20 minutes) to two beautiful beaches-- Playa Majagual and our favorite Playa Maderas. The surf was perfect and the fish tacos at tacos locos were the best. You do need to rent a 4x4 to stay here (automatic is best and cuts down the travel time to town), but that is a small price to pay to be surrounded by incredible views. The town is anywhere from 30-45 minutes away depending on the conditions of the road. Casa Tranquila and the staff exceeded our expectations. Special shout out to Camacho. He was very helpful and super friendly.

  • We were extremely pleased with our experience at Casa Tranquila last week! All of our interactions with both the house owners & Gabriela (the agent) were timely & very helpful. The house itself is a beauty - open layout with ample space & a kitchen that we got a TON of use out of. Outdoor shower by the pool, beautiful master bathroom & on site laundry were just a few of the highlights. We did have some issues with critters (wasps by the pool by day & bats by the pool by night) that were a bit irritating but did NOT deter us from using the pool (we knew we were coming to the jungle!) & Gabriela did a great job of warning us of what to look out for in regards to critters. You will be woken up (at 4, 5 or 6am) by loud howler monkeys, so if you are a light sleeper I would bring ear plugs. The kitchen is beautifully appointed to accommodate at least 6 people; we frequently cooked meals & grilled & were pleased with the set up. Probably the only deterrent to the house is that it is a 25 minute uphill (1,000ft uphill) drive on a dirt road - this is certainly alittle treacherous in the dark & means we had to plan our nights carefully since the house is not exactly accessible to town. Gabriela did stress to us that 4x4 is a MUST - our Dihatsu almost did not make it home several times so I would strongly recommend a Jeep or Land Rover & a driver who is familiar with rough terrain. All in all, a beautiful house in a beautiful part of Nicaragua with great owners!

  • Casa Tranquila was a great place to stay. All the pictures were an accurate representation of the home and the house was fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Laura and Sharon were quick to respond and helpful. Camacho and Carlos, the private security guard for the home, were quick to help out with anything relating to the house. We had an issue with many wasps surrounding the pool during the day. Laura did the best she could to have the pool cleaned, but Mother Nature won the battle. Such is life.

  • This may be the my favorite of the multitude of homes I've rented around the world. Simple, beautifully built, beautifully landscaped, secluded, secure, luxurious and rustic all at the same time. I could happily have spent the whole time solely on the property and in the pool. Always super fun to take the 4 minute 4x4 trip or 10 minute walk down to the practically private beach, a seriously beautiful tropical pacific beach that makes your eyeballs ache. Laura was prompt, friendly, straight forward and super helpful. Everything was as promised and far more streamlined than when I visited 5 years ago. Gabriela the property manager couldn't have been more helpful, going so far as to come shopping with us before we headed up to Balcones. Balcones is a sort of eco-development with less than 10 homes and with so much land and steep hillsides it doesn't feel developed at all. It has a full time security and the house itself has someone there (but out of sight) 24/7 to make sure everything is working properly and to keep a general eye on things. Also there's howler monkeys, 3 toed sloths and tons of birds. Pretty luxurious - I don't know about you but I don't get that at my spot in Brooklyn. Be prepared to have a 4x4 the roads are steep (and fun) and the drive is about 20 mins door to door from San Juan del Sur, just far enough to be away from the multitudes of tourists but close enough to not feel like a crazy trek. It's not for everyone (but neither is Nica) but I'd say it's great for most and pretty remarkable. I can't recommend it highly enough.

About
We are just two travel loving people who fell in love with the country of Nicaragua and ended up buying our dream home! While we try and spend as much time there as possible, occasionally, we do have to work- and we do want to keep discovering this amazing planet. While we are doing this, we are happy to offer homes in our community to others to enjoy and discover this truly amazing country! San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is the place to come for travellers who are looking for surf, sunshine and a little adventure, and we try our best to make our home a little piece of luxury to come and relax in between all that fun! Through renting our own personal home Casa Selva- I fell into assisting my amazing neighbours in Balcones de Majagual with renting their homes- the rest they say is history. You couldn't pick a better spot in Nicaragua- and you couldn't pick better guests than myself and my husband Joel!
