About this listing
Tucked away in medieval Birgu, this pied-à-terre is the ultimate pad for getting away from it all, while only a few minutes boat-ride from Valletta.
Experience authentic village life outside your doorstep while living in a pad where attention to detail is clearly the architect-owners' agenda.
Petite one-bedroom house, set in medieval Birgu, in the heart of its 'Collacchio' - the Knights' neighborhood, renovated in 2015
Located in one of the most idyllic pedestrian streets of this medieval and historic town, this holiday home offers the blissful respite of village life, while being only a few metres away from a number of wine bars, restaurants, a yacht marina and even a casino. A bus terminus and ferry to Valletta are also a 12-minute walk away.
The understated interior was designed and finished by the owner-architect - with particular detailing in the kitchen and bathroom areas - together with an interesting mix of retro and vintage furnishings. Accommodation includes sitting area, kitchen and bathroom on ground floor; and bedroom on first floor. The bedroom and living room are fully air-conditioned, while the bathroom is equipped with underfloor heating. Malta can get quite chilly in the winter months!
We can arrange airport pick-up, a small breakfast shopping or perhaps even some special surprise for your and your partner...the architect-owner's parents live across road and they are very helpful!
The street is fully pedestrian & paved with 500 year old hardstone, so apart from the balcony guests often take chairs to sit outside like most of the locals do in the summer months.
Interaction with Guests
Owners parents' live 15 metres away, and are very accessible & always happy to help & give tips. Landlords live 20 minutes away.
This is the most up and coming neighborhood on the Grand Harbour.
With Valletta's south side in direct view and easy boat ride away, the harbour is the most romantic way to get out of town.
There are 20 or so restaurants & bars, spread on the marina and also hidden along the medieval streets, so you can just walk leisurely to have supper in picturesque surroundings, everyday.
The recent "Dock No.1" landscape embellishment project is unique: historical docklands & warehouses framed with trees and even a generous patch of turf to stroll around; while the restoration of the historic Fort St.Angelo is nearing completion.
All in all - a part of Malta which is still relatively unspoiled by developers and tourism: a true hideout where guests feel & are treated as locals.
Ferry & traditional-boat rides to Valletta from early morning ... Recently extended until midnight.. For only €1.50 per ride.
Birgu life is very easy going, and we don't believe that you need rules when you come on holiday! Keep the noise levels down after midnight, and if there is ever need for help, our parents are always at home and live across the street.
From Jun 1 - Aug 31, 2015 the minimum stay is 1 night.
Chris and Anna were great hosts, there handy booklet on the area was really helpful. The apartment itself was incredible, an amazingly designed retreat from the hustle and bustle of Valletta. Really enjoyed the traditional boat trips over to the old town. We ate in the (recommended) Harbour Club a few times, really nice. Had a great time would recommend to anyone.
Chris and Anna provide the perfect nook in Vittoriosa (Birgu) from which to base yourself in Malta. The location is perfect for those wanting to be far from the maddening crowd, yet a short 15 minute ferry ride to Valletta and all it offers.
Anna was superb in keeping in contact with us at all times, and an added bonus was being met by Chris' parents who opened up the apartment for us and provided a little bit of history of the area.
The apartment is tastefully furnished, terrific kitchen facilities, comfortable bedding and a wonderful courtyard bathroom.
The local eating recommendations were all sampled - pay particular attention to Tal Petut for a seasonal and traditional dining experience.
Thanks so much for presenting and sharing,
Tom and Joanne
Fantastic little place in what is arguably the best location in Malta. The neighborhood is a bit quiet, especially at night, but it's very beautiful. The unit itself is well kept and stylish. My only complaint was that it didn't have an iron/iron board. When asked, they supplied one but the iron leaked everywhere, so I just went out and bought one. Anyone else staying going forward can thank me if you use it ;)
Overall, I'd highly recommend staying here!!!
We spent some great days in Malta and at Vittoriosa Vintage. The apartment is beautiful, quiet, clean and looks exactly like the pictures. Thanks to our lovely landlords, for the beautiful stay!
Birgu is Magical!
The apartment is good but what makes it really amazing is the location! Birgu was our favorite part of Malta and staying here really made our trip. This is a tiny, charming town across the bay from Valetta. The buildings are hundreds of years old, the people are friendly, and this apartment is on one of the most picturesque streets I've ever seen. In the morning you can grab a pastry (try the ricotta one!) from the corner store. In the evening you can stroll by the marina and have dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants. If you want groceries, you can buy fresh Maltese bread and fruits in the plaza a 5 minute walk away. There are few tourists in Birgu so you feel like you really live here.
The colorful boats to Valetta are 3 euro and the trip takes 5 minutes. This means you are close to the touristy hustle and bustle but also have your own quiet retreat. Just be aware that the last boat back from Valetta to Birgu is at 6pm, after that your options are the bus or a taxi.
The apartment is in a medieval building but has been recently renovated so the interior is very modern. It is very cute, clean and stocked with all the basics. If you need anything, Chris's parents live right across the street and are very sweet and always willing to help.
Such an amazing space! The historic neighborhood is incredible. All the amenities were high quality and well planned out. The guide left for us with the background on the property and recommendations for our stay was well met. We used many of the suggestions. Thank you for sharing this property (which obviously has a special place in your family's history). We hope to stay here again befor the end of the year.
The Vittoriosa Vintage is an exellent choice to be in a quiet area in a pittoresque surrounding. The apartment is nicely detailed and furnished, a design-lovers place. We met Chris and his girlfriend once, they were always very helpful and caring. His parents are nearby, so don´t expect any problems. A place to enjoy.

About the Host, Chris & Anna
Hey there! I am a Maltese architect who loves art and design, music and travelling.
My partner Anna and I greatly enjoy meeting and working with people from different nationalities and backgrounds.
I was brought up in medieval Birgu, Anna is from Minsk, and today we just love living and working in Valletta, Malta's busy capital by day which calms down and becomes truly enchanting by night.
We believe that the best and most authentic travel experiences are about meeting the locals, spending some time with them, and living in their homes and by their ways. This is why we love AIRBNB; both as hosts and as guests... Well done for such a great idea, AIRBNB, and look forward to hosting you on our beautiful island or meeting you in your home!
