The New York Times offered a full section on traveling to awesome Vieques in its November, 2013 issue.
Travel and Leisure Magazine (Feb. 2013) ranked Vieques along with amazing islands around the world such as Capri, Bora Bora, Santorini, Tahiti, Kauai among others. No need for you to travel far, just a short flight from major cities in the USA you can enjoy the magical beauty of Vieques.
Vieques has been voted 2012's Top Island in the Caribbean -- besting Bermuda, Bahamas, BVI and St. John. This is the second time our island has been voted by readers of Travel & Leisure Magazine as the top destination in its category.
This is a lovely spacious home overlooking the ocean in Bravos De Boston on the north shore of Vieques. It has magnificent Atlantic ocean views including the islands of Culebra and mainland Puerto Rico, with constant trade winds almost always in the 80's year round. Stunning sunrise and sunsets can be viewed while relaxing on the deck. Easy walk to several cozy beaches. The best surfing on the island is across the street from the house as well as great snorkeling.
The house is located in the safest and most sought after neighborhood on the island and a 5 minute walk to Isabel Segunda with shops, groceries, bank, restaurants, bakeries, the ferry et al. Only about 15 minute ride from the airport, Esperanza, the Bioluminescent Bay and the many Caribbean beaches. Over all, Vieques has over 50 beaches (Atlantic and Caribbean).
The upstairs Guesthouse has 2 bedrooms both with bathroom on suite, a large living area, full kitchen, dining room and deck. It is fully furnished and equipped including beach chairs, towels, coolers, etc.
Satellite TV is included as well as high speed wireless internet. There is also an outside shower which is ideal when returning from the beach.
Some of what we offer/provide for our valued guests:
1) complimentary pick up and return at airport/ferry upon arrival and departure
2) all check out cleaning, thus guests are not required to do anything at check out
3) all bath and beach towels, chairs, cooler, etc
4) caretaker on call and nearby
5) concierge service before and during your stay
6) adult and kid friendly ie internet, satellite TV, games and beach toys
Well nice place, worth to stay
Ann is an amazing host! I emailed her several times while we were staying in the upstairs guesthouse. She got back to me immediately. She was very helpful with dining recommendations (our daughter had special dietary needs) and places to visit. Rene was equally helpful and responded to our needs promptly. We felt extremely safe walking to town and the beach. The location was ideal. We loved the spaciousness and comfort of the accommodations. My only regret is that we did not stay longer. One to two weeks would be ideal. We live in Hawaii and were blown away by the beauty of Vieques. We hope to return soon.
Ann's upper guest house is beautiful. The view is spectacular. Unfortunately we were only there for 48 hours. Rene was not able to pick us up at the airport. He told us to hire a taxi and he would give the driver directions. We should have rented a car at the airport. After arriving at the house and being charged $20 for a ten minute ride, Rene gave us no recommendations for car rental. He told us to pick one from the ads on the map. A van picked my husband up to travel back past the airport to return with a car. After reading the safety warnings in Ann's notebook we were not comfortable walking to town. We did walk to the beach across the street but it is all rocks. We ate in Esperanza each evening and visited some great beaches and snorkeled. We took the kayak tour of the Bioluminescent Bay. No one told us that it has gone dark. If they had been honest we may have still done the kayak tour but felt ripped off being led in circles before being told it no longer glowed. Of course this has nothing to do with our rental. It is one of the nicest homes on the island. We enjoyed the balcony and all of the amenities in the home.
Deborah and ALL potential travelers: Your host is there to help you. We give our phone numbers, text and email info for you. COMMUNICATION is imperative. Deborah had a bad experience that did not have to occur. I wish I'd known as I could have solved ALL of her issues. We are all travelers (hosts too) and all want a good vacation experience. I try to host as I want to be hosted!
*I could have arranged other travel plans as Rene had a car issue (a 1st for us but cars can break down without warning). I have reached out to refund Deborah's taxi fee.
*I have a car rental service that my guests are all happy with and would have sorted that out instantly.
*Safety warnings? Vieques is safe family/tourist friendly. Ironically Deborah's misassumptions led her the not family friendly (party) area after 10pm. I suggest guests be cautious as they would ANYWHERE on the planet. Thats my warning.
* The (many awesome) beaches are on federal park lands (thus the need for a jeep). We have the BEST surfing on the island across the street from the house. There is also a great little cove for wonderful snorkeling (all ages) at the bottom of the hill.
* The bio bay issue. I cannot help if a tour is not running, but I could have made my own calls on her behalf had she wished.
A a reminder to myself and everyone.... lets communicate in the moment. After the fact can lead to a less than awesome holiday. I pride myself on all I can to accommodate my guests. You just gotta reach out :-)
Whether you choose to stay at Bravos Sun and Sea Guesthouses or elsewhere, Its so worth the trip. Vieques is a friendly and magical island.
We were a group of 5 staying here at the Upper Guesthouse and we love our stay.
The house was perfect for our group. It was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed.
Rene is the caretaker there and was very responsive to whatever we needed.
I took my own car on the ferry there and have a car there was able to get around when and where I wanted to go.
Everyone was comfortable and happy with the house.
Great location and house. We really liked this place. Stayed on 2nd level.
Pros: location right on water, great balcony views of ocean, convenient to ferry and amenities (grocery store) of Isabel, helpful caretaker who picked us up at ferry, spacious house, comfortable common area, easy parking, and plenty of beach items in garage like beach chairs.
Cons: Isabel is fairly run-down and less pretty than Esperanza, but the people are friendly.
I am sorry you found Isabel 'run down'. It is a typical little island village and to the locals, not at all run down. :) I think it is a matter of expectations. There are some great eateries there, bank, post office, art galleries, organic food store, etc. Always safe to walk around. And as you said, the people are friendly. Thanks for your visit and I am happy you enjoyed the guesthouse. Please come again.
Five of us spent five nights at Ann's place and had a wonderful time. The apartment is spacious (two bathrooms is definitely a plus) and has a balcony with a view of the ocean that is perfect for drinking your morning coffee on. It is within easy walking distance of downtown Isabel Segunda and comes equipped with beach things (towels, chairs, coolers), which was incredibly convenient. The caretaker, Rene, was very helpful in picking us up at the ferry at the beginning of our stay and dropping us at the airport at the end.
Had a wonderful time! The house was clean and well-stocked (even plenty of books for beach reading). Rene, the caretaker, was really nice and helpful. We rented scooters and were able to get around the island and explore easily. The house is an easy walk to the restaurants, ferry, shops in town. There's an outdoor shower and beautiful view from the patio. Definitely recommend!
Really nice place to stay, spacy and beautiful view, guess what, there is even a BBQ at backyard, great living room and kitchen with everything provided, just relax and enjoy!
We had a wonderful time at Ann's guesthouse. The house was very clean when we arrived. Bedrooms are large and comfortable and the balcony is very big with beautiful views right over the ocean. We really enjoyed cooking in the awesome kitchen which had all appliances we needed. Air conditioning in all rooms and fans kept us very comfortable : )Rene, the caretaker greeted us when we arrived and answered all questions we had. We would definitely stay there again and I highly recommend this place to everyone!
First, we met Rene at the ferry. Not only did he give us a ride to the rental car place, but then led us back to the house so we would not get lost. (website hidden)maps works just fine here for roads and location, address finding is another matter. This house, you will find, is EASILY located from the ferry; up only a few roads. The house is very secure, not that it mattered that much to me. In one week, going from San Juan, migrating over to Vieques, not once did I witness one crime in progress or past, nor one arrest in action- a virtual impossibility in New Orleans. The house itself is clean and well kept, the ACs work excellently, and from the balcony you can see and hear the surf and feel the breeze. The house comes will all sorts of supplies for lounging and for the beach and is very convenient to Isabel Segunda II for your shopping needs. Best of all, besides separate bathrooms, (a very nice thing!) the owners and caretaker were EXTREMELY clear and easy to communicate with. The floor plan is wide open and should you leave the drapes open, a wall of windows (two of them windowed doors) will let an awesome view of the sea in, one that is private from any of the houses around!!) The house is exceedingly clean. No bugs of any kind. From the house, we visited countless beaches by rented jeep, even ended up going up and down mountains and through wilderness! Take it slow. there is no reason to be a speedjerk here. The wild paso fino horses are everywhere and they will walk as they please, as are mongoose, egrets, hummingbirds, roosters, friendly cats and dogs. The house and most of the island are pretty chill at night. This is relaxation at its best! We visited countless beaches and not a single one was packed (even on a national holiday!) Try your Spanish. it is ok if you are not very good. People appreciate your effort. It shows you being a good guest. In all be game for this experience and try to absorb what the island has to offer. Try Bili for that matter. You won't regret it. For the location, the fabulous Rene, the excellent amenities and condition and upkeep level of the house, there is nowhere I'd rather stay on Vieques. Nowhere. This was everything I had hoped for. Rene even drove us to return the car and then to the ferry when it was time to go. No matter how I tried he would not even accept a tip. On top of that, he was an absolute encyclopedia regarding the island. Trust me, this is the place you want to stay on Vieques. Additional--there IS vegetarian food on this island. Nice, eh? I'll be thinking about the clear green waters of Playa La Chiva until I can return & staying here is the only option for me!
