About This Listing
This quiet, rustic cabin is situated in the middle of an organic garden and yard in the heart of North Berkeley’s “Gourmet Ghetto”, just minutes from numerous fine restaurants and shops, and a 15 minute walk to UC Berkeley campus and BART.
I am a light sleeper and I hear no traffic, no freeways, no adjoining neighbors at night. It's wonderful.
The cottage has its own entrance, kitchenette and bathroom with a fabulous, strong shower. The main room is fully furnished, with a sofa, coffee table and a 1934 Bush & Lane piano. The kitchenette is directly across from the living area and it’s lovely to drink morning tea on the couch and look across through the kitchen windows to the garden. On warm days, open the double doors at the end of the studio to view the garden. Or simply sit outside.
The bedroom is separated from the main area by a closet and a curtain, and the bathroom is directly adjacent to the bedroom. It is very cozy in the bedroom which just fits a 2-year old Keetsa organic memory foam mattress and pillows and a bedside table. If you have long arms you can reach the bathroom door from the bed! (read: small but comfortable!).
There is wireless internet, a fully stocked kitchen with a two-burner stove and oven and fridge with freezer. I have lived here 5 years and I love it. Feel free to check out the awesome treehouse in the garden. I have no pets but the garden is shared with the Victorian house in the front of the property, and they have a grumpy but harmless older dog. He barks when you walk through the gate past the house but that’s it. He occasionally comes into the yard/garden with his owner and attempts to catch the squirrels.
If you walk down the garden path and through the gate onto Vine Street, you will find yourself in the heart of the Gourmet Ghetto (so named because of all the gourmet restaurants and shops), and the lovely neighborhood of North Berkeley, with beautiful Victorian homes and charming gardens. Visit the original Peet's Coffee and Tea, opened April 1st, 1966, just half a block away! Other famous restaurants and establishments include Chez Panisse, The Cheeseboard, Cafe Gratitude, The Local Butcher Shop, Gregoire, the Thursday farmer's market, etc. It would be silly to charge extra for breakfast in my cottage as there are a dozen delicious places to get anything from gourmet coffee, muffins, bagels from Saul's, Masse's French pastries, or simply eggs and toast!
It’s a 15 minute walk to UC Berkeley Campus, and to North Berkeley or Downtown Berkeley Bart stations which can take you to San Francisco in approximately 30 minutes. San Francisco is an easy drive as well (traffic permitting, of course) of approximately 45 minutes, as is the North Bay and scenic Marin County with Muir Woods, Mt Tamalpais, Stinson Beach, etc. There is usually easy street parking within 1-2 blocks of the cottage.
Come enjoy all that the Bay area has to offer from this charming pied-a-terre.
Two night minimum.
Shoes off in house please (the garden promotes muddy shoes).
No smoking or drugs.
No crazy parties.
This is a Scent Sensitive Household. Usually 'natural/organic' or gently scented products are fine but the worst offender is scented laundry detergent. It seems to have oils that clings to surfaces and remains, even if not directly used. Most people are fine, I've only had one guest that 'left' a scent! Kindly let me know if you use heavily scented products.
Note I am not against scents! I burn essential oils here (gently) and very occasionally, Juniper Ridge incense, a very natural brand of tree based incense.
Karma was great. Even though we weren't able to meet face to face, she stayed in contact by phone and text. There was a problem which she addressed immediately and gave me a little discount at the end. A little funky--and who doesn't need more funk?--and close to UCB and gourmet ghetto. Had a great time!
An incredibly cozy little place, situated away from street noise, in a lovely garden. The location is incredible (if you like a healthy, organic lifestyle). Karma was very organized, friendly and helpful. We had a lot of luggage (four big pieces), so the size of the place was a bit challenging (it's a studio, essentially). But for all "normal" travelers it's excellent - especially in spring through fall, when you can take advantage of the lush garden.
I had a wonderful stay at Karma's cottage. She was warm and welcoming. Her cottage was very comfortable and in a perfect location. Karma was very accommodating and helpful. I loved staying at her cottage! It is a charming, lovely, and cozy home-base for exploring Berkeley. I felt very safe there and it was very quiet at night. Good wifi. Excellent coffee shop across the street. Great restaurants, shops, chocolate boutiques, wine shops, and grocery stores within easy walking distance. Karma is very friendly and kind and her home is very comfortable!
Karma's cottage was a great home base for my partner and I during our stay in Berkeley. It was really nice to come back to a couch, a kitchen, and a cozy bed in the evenings. The cottage is comfy, and the location couldn't be better. Just a hop, skip and a jump to great food and bus stops. Karma warned us ahead of time that there was some construction going on at the house out in front, but it didn't bother us at all. We didn't even need the earplugs we brought along. Just a bit of hammering and sawing off in the distance, no big deal. We were happy with our stay!
This cottage was the perfect place for my 5 night stay in Berkeley.
It was clean and comfortable. The location could not have been better. A two minute walk led to some great food and excellent coffee shops. Thank you, Karma, for helping to make my California vacation extremely comfortable and enjoyable.
Notre séjour dans la cabine s'est bien passé. nous avons aimé la simplicité de la chambre. Nous avons cependant trouvé le loyer un peu trop cher en comparaison avec une autre chambre louée au paravent.
About the Host, Karma
I was born and raised in California. I studied music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, graduated, and moved to England to pursue a career in opera. I performed in semi-professional and amateur theaters all around London, and had a blast swing dancing, making friends, studying yoga, natural medicine and bodywork.
When I came back to the Bay Area I knew I had to live in Berkeley and immediately fell in love with my Vine Street Cottage. I've been here 5 years, building my massage clientele, practicing singing and piano at home, performing in shows, cooking and enjoying the sun (I missed the sun living in London).
My neighborhood is one of the best food corners of the world, it's called the Gourmet Ghetto. I feel so spoiled by the quality of food we have here, farmer's markets happen on an almost daily basis all around Berkeley and San Francisco. The people are friendly and open, and there is so much creative talent everywhere.
I am happy to offer my cottage over long weekends to enable your fantastic holiday in the Bay Area! When I travel I seek out B&B's or homes to stay in, because this helps me feel the culture or the personality of the area I am staying in. It's more fun to be a guest than a tourist.
I am inspired by Alice Waters and her local, seasonal and delicious cuisine. The service is excellent and non pretentious. It is an excellent place to bring family, or for a romantic date.Shattuck Avenue Berkeley CA 94709
My favorites are the Blueberry Millet Muffins and the Oat Scones. They have the biggest selection of cheese I have ever encountered with friendly and knowledgeable staff.Shattuck Avenue Berkeley CA 94709-1517
They have organic options on the menu and it is good, solid Thai food for the price. Ive never been disappointed.Shattuck Avenue Berkeley CA 94709
They use organic milk, and their spicy mocha and latte is excellent.Shattuck Avenue Berkeley CA 94709-1612
