Jefferson, Texas, United States

If you want to get away from it all, the Old Cypress River House is your place. A full mile 3 mile drive off the main highway, on the Bayou that feeds Caddo Lake and is down river from Lake of the Pines, Old Cypress River House provides serenity and quiet where you can see the stars, listen to the wildlife and just kick back. Play cornhole , layout on the deck, use the 2 provided kayaks, bring your fishing equipment and fish from the deck, roast s'mores over a fire in the fire pit, play games inside by the fireplace, cook out on the grill, bring your archery equipment and shoot at the available target, or just explore the 2.5 acres of land looking for deer, herons and other wild life. The area is known for birding and it's wetlands. The wetlands of the area are one of the best examples of a mature flooded bald cypress forest in the United States and include Cypress trees up to 400 years old. The area is beautiful.

If you prefer more civilization, you can be in Jefferson in less than 15 minutes and enjoy one of the older history rich towns in East Texas. From antique shops to eateries, ghost walks and historic tours to carriage rides and river cruises, Jefferson will allow you to sample all the things a small Texas town is known for. There are many festival and other special events year around in Jefferson including quilt shows, Mardi Gras parades, the antique car show, the "Diamond Bessie Murder Trial" play, train tours, craft shows, the antique tractor show, Taste of Jefferson, the Christmas Express train, the Christmas Candlelight Home Tours and many others. Be sure to check dates and times for any activities you’re planning on doing, because unlike the city, a small town keeps it’s own schedule!

If it's the lake life you love, then you are less than 20 minutes to Caddo Lake where you can rent canoes and kayak's and explore the only natural lake in Texas. Or bring your own boat! Caddo Lake is one of the best fishing lakes in the South and many say that Caddo Lake is the prettiest lake in Texas. There are frequent bass tournaments held at Caddo Lake and there are many companies giving boat tours of the Cypress forest, some in swamp boats. Arrow head hunting is also a favorite past time around Caddo Lake since the Caddo Indians made their home around Caddo Lake for thousands of years.
Lake of the Pines is also a great lake known for fishing and skiing. It's known to be home to giant catfish. You can rent a boat at the Bullfrog Marina on Lake of the Pines(30 minutes from the cabin) and spend the day fishing by boat or tubing.
