The Beautifully rustic cabin, Wabi Sabi House, is nestled in the most sought after location in the Ojai Valley, the fabled East End, where Krishnamurti himself used to take his daily constitutional. Surrounded by nature and steps from great hiking.
Wabi Sabi House is nestled in the most sought after location in the Ojai Valley, the fabled East End, where Krishnamurti himself used to take his daily constitutional.
The East of Ojai, where the Chumash thrived for 10,000 years, is the part of Ojai that Aldus Huxley, Jackson Pollock, and John Lennon have come to rest while in California. The large parcels of land, and ample privacy still allow for a lone bike ride along a lush, breathtaking road, undisturbed.
Drenched in sunlight and twenty minutes from the beach, this Japanese style retreat sits at the base of Horn Canyon, with a huge private yard filled with bamboo, succulents, a fire pit and outdoor dining. It is situated between two preparatory schools, The Thacher school, and The Ojai Valley School, The Krishnamurti Library, and what was once Beatrice Woods' home and studio.
Just up the trail which winds past the house and up over the "Pink Moment" bluffs, resplendent with local flora and fauna, crystal streams, and a natural climbing wall, is a Pilates studio offering world class massage in an outdoor setting.
Natural sage, aloe, and aromatic herbs are right outside your front door, and down the road is an organic Pizza Parlor nestled amongst orange trees, oaks, and sweeping vistas. The good news is, you are still 1 hour and 15 minutes from Los Angeles and a short bike ride from town.
The cottage has a detached Japanese style bath house with a restored clawfoot tub, and birch paneling. It is ideal for a private soak after a long hike...
Views from the house include the Ojai mountain range on all sides, replete with hawks flying overhead. It is perfect for weekends or for the week to work in nature, near organic cuisine, Whole Foods style markets, world class spas, yoga, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and of course..surfing! This is the perfect place to re-charge all of your senses...enjoy!
Guests have access to the best hiking in Ojai right outside the front door, there are fresh oranges to pick from the tree on the property, mountain streams, pepper trees, a soccer field surrounded by the mountain range and generally the most gorgeous flora and fauna that Ojai has to offer.
Interaction with Guests
Guest can text me or call me at any time if they need something. I live in Los Angeles but my folks live on the property and are available for anything guests may need from extra firewood, to tea light candles. The key and a manual are left for them so if they don't want to see anyone, they have that option also. The property is one acre so complete privacy is available.
The East End of Ojai is the most gorgeous area in Ojai. It is a sought after respite for people from neighboring Los Angeles where vacation homes are kept, but is also one steeped with long time residents who will give a friendly wave to anyone who happens past on foot, bicycle or car. Low traffic, close to town, like mountains in Spain, or the South of France. It's exquisite by all standards of what paradise looks like. Flanked by two prep schools, students jogging and horseback riding are a frequent sight. It's a great place to unwind.
There is a cute open air trolley car that picks up and let's off at Boccalis restaurant from the center of town which is a walk from the house. Drive is 3-5 minutes. Walk is about 45 minutes.
Other Things to Note
The house is the perfect balance of nature and town. Just far enough away to make one feel completely at peace. A massage and Pilates studio are a short walk up the trail, and hiking is at the front door. Because the house flanks a national forest, please be aware that indigenous California wildlife is part of the landscape. We advise that you keep your dog on a leash while outside. Otherwise enjoy the utter gorgeousness! Incredible beaches are a 30 minute drive away and surfboards are available!
Please be sure to adhere to check-in/check-out times as we often are booked back to back and Kristy the housekeeper needs time to make the house sparkle:).
Please no smoking.
Please leave keys on counter upon departure.
Please wash dishes and leave to dry upon departure.
Please clean up all pet debris in yard upon departure.
If you bring dogs prone to barking, please do not leave them unattended for long periods of time.
Please do not let your dog off the leash while outside.
Please no electric musical instruments.
Please do not leave candles burning unattended.
Please remove excess traces of your pet inside and outside of the house upon departure.
Enjoy your stay!
Really cool place. One big room with really cool feel to it. If you needed a place to go write that "novel" this would be it. The AC worked well to cool the room down and the bed was comfy. The photos due the place justice but actually inside is bigger than I thought it would be. Nice "rustic" touches all around... Very escapist vibe to chill. No TV was actually a plus here.
This was the perfect refuge for a weekend away from Los Angeles. We were very happy to be able to drive up midday and enjoy the afternoon at the cottage shortly after check-in time. The space is beautiful and quiet and, as others have mentioned, this time of year there is a beautiful orange blossom scent in the air. We enjoyed sleeping in, reading and sitting out on the terrace, the beautiful bathhouse and being able to see out into the trees while still feeling very private in the house.
We also appreciated the restaurant recommendations- we tried the sushi place and Osteria, both of which we enjoyed very much.
Thank you for a lovely stay! I am sure we'll be back.
One tip-- Waze was wrong about which driveway to turn up- look for the driveway right after the Pepper Tree Lodge, I think it was called and work your way up there. It's much easier to find if there is still some daylight, so if you can arrive close to check-in time, we recommend that.
The Elegant Wabi Sabi was a dream. This place was surrounded by Orange groves and Avocado trees. At the time we went (in March), the orange blossoms were in bloom perfuming almost the entire city of Ojai.
Both the cabin and the bathroom were so tastefully decorated. It truly was the perfect little cabin for an escape. Thank you Caitlin!
Caitlin's place was a dream. This was my first visit to Ojai and I'm so glad I found this place to stay. It was exactly as described and just what I was looking for. My dog Bernie and I really enjoyed the beautiful hike that is easily accessible from the Wabi Sabi (read: no driving, just start hiking). That was a big part of the adventure. The bathtub/bath house was very relaxing, I used the outdoor fireplace each night and the kitchenette was perfect. Comfortable bed, plenty of clean towels, AC worked well during one of the hot days, overall very pleasant experience. I only have 2 regrets: my stay was too short, and I didn't take time to read Patti Smith's "Just Kids." Next time. :) I HIGHLY recommend this place!
I had the most wonderful, relaxing weekend at Wabi Sabi. Even though this was my first visit to the Ojai area, I loved the rustic charm of Caitlin's cabin so much that I didn't leave the premises at all the whole weekend. The cabin had everything I needed to cook, lounge and get some work done (not too much work, of course). I enjoyed the simple, thoughtful decor and the separate bath house, which was a lovely place to unwind and watch the sunset. As a solo traveler, I appreciated that I could hear the neighbors, but still enjoy complete privacy. It was a bit more rustic than I expected, and the flying insects were numerous, particularly after dark, but that didn't bother me. I look forward to returning the next time I need a peaceful, relaxing break from life in a quaint, comfortable setting.
LOVELY natural setting. Loved the smell of the bathroom (cedar?) - but didn't realize that it would be separate from the cottage. The weather was nice so it wasn't an issue to walk the few steps between the structures. I was surprised by the home that is across the driveway (the main house I think) - but got used to it. Would call the cottage's decor: artsy, quirky, rustic. Hot water heater holds enough for 12 minutes of running water time so not sure if that would fill up the bathtub for a soak or not. Sunset was pinky awesomeness. Hiked up Horn Canyon Trail for sunrise. Beautiful. Worth it. Loved that we could hear the goats a few homes away. The smells are fabulous as well. Would totally stay here again. Very calm and relaxing. Thanks for the Pellegrino!
We loved this sweet little one-room cabin with separate bathhouse. We had fun cooking on the mini two-burner stove and found enough room in the little refrigerator for three meals worth of ingredients. (No oven though!) As far as we're concerned this is the best neighborhood in Ojai - the air is fresh and full of the scent of orange blossoms, and just around the corner from the Krishnamurti library. We will stay here again next time we have the chance to come. Thanks for an amazing stay!

Hello! I am a creative professional..illustrator, interior designer and brand consultant, living in Los Feliz, CA. I just co-founded my own business, a Design/Art House called Zoe Bios Creative. Our showroom is located in Silverlake CA, and we offer art and home furnishings. Although I love my LA neighborhood, it is great to keep my home in Ojai as a vacation rental so that I can escape to it from time to time to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, to hike, and to enjoy small town life..:). I love the idea of sharing my place and the experience of Ojai with others! It is truly a great place to both relax and/or work, and recharge. I have completely redesigned it to let in lots of light and veiws...I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do! Cheers! Caitlin
