The Captain’s Cabin -- Welcome

This is the upper unit of a two unit house. For larger groups we recommend renting both units This unit has a full kitchen, dinning room, large living room with a wood burning fireplace (with a fold-out full size air mattress), two bedrooms (one queen size bed and two singles), and two full bathrooms. Please note the two single beds are located in a room referred to as the sleeping porch (our personal favorite room of the house) directly off of the master bedroom. There is one parking spot included with this unit and additional parking available on the side of the house. There is a gas and a charcoal grill available for your use. This unit also has beautiful and large back deck with sweeping views of the bay.

This house reflects the lives of my grandparents. My grandfather was a master mariner by profession. He sailed in the American Merchant Marine from the 1920s to the 1940s, circumnavigating the globe more than 25 times. His wartime service was as captain of the Liberty ship, SS John Fiske, whose identifying plaque from the ship’s bridge is on the eastern exterior wall next to the steering wheel. When they retired in the 1970s, my grandparents chose this location so that he and my mother could have a quiet life in the woods, but at the same time could see the horizon and part of the sea.

The tree-top setting is just a half-mile from the town of Inverness with its store, post office, café, and restaurants; and a ten-minute drive from the restaurants, shops and weekend Farmers’ Market of Point Reyes Station. Beaches, hiking trails and the Point Reyes National Seashore are within walking distance or a short car ride, and the south-facing deck is sunny and warm all day. But don't take our word for it--read what the New York Times had to say about Salt Water, the local restaurant, and the delights of the wider area. '36 hours in Marin County', 27 Jan. 2013.

We hope that you enjoy our house, enter into its spirit enjoying the views of Tomales Bay, the hills, woods and beaches of western Marin and Elephant Mountain bathed in the ever- changing light of the Point Reyes Peninsula, a very special ‘Island in Time’.

Very nice spot with a great view. Amazing deck. Kitchen is well outfitted. Everything was clean and everything in good repair. Master bedroom and bath are large and comfortable. Second bedroom was really for kids, not really great for additional adults. Access from the 2nd bedroom is through the first bedroom or via the deck. Beds in 'the kids room' are not full length. 2nd bath is basic and on the opposite and of the house. Nice wood stove, BYOWood. Furnishings are nice but a little worn. White rugs so no shoes inside. No parties, but good for daytime visits from friends.

We loved staying at this house! It's not only a beautiful spot (the view from the living room and deck is spectacular) but also the perfect location for visiting the Point Reyes National Seashore and for sampling the local cuisine (be sure to try the oysters and the cheese!). If you like to cook, this house has a well-equipped kitchen with an entire drawer of spices and herbs. The host is super nice and helpful.

I am a wine broker living in San Francisco. This house has been in our family for my entire life, and I have grown up swimming in the bay, hiking the hills and surfing the oceans around this beautiful part of California.
