This house reflects the lives of my grandparents. My grandfather was a master mariner by profession. He sailed in the American Merchant Marine from the 1920s to the 1940s, circumnavigating the globe more than 25 times. His wartime service was as captain of the Liberty ship, SS John Fiske, whose identifying plaque from the ship’s bridge is on the eastern exterior wall next to the steering wheel. When they retired in the 1970s, my grandparents chose this location so that he and my mother could have a quiet life in the woods, but at the same time could see the horizon and part of the sea.
The tree-top setting is just a half-mile from the town of Inverness with its store, post office, café, and restaurants; and a ten-minute drive from the restaurants, shops and weekend Farmers’ Market of Point Reyes Station. Beaches, hiking trails and the Point Reyes National Seashore are within walking distance or a short car ride, and the south-facing deck is sunny and warm all day. But don't take our word for it--read what the New York Times had to say about Salt Water, the local restaurant, and the delights of the wider area. '36 hours in Marin County', 27 Jan. 2013.
We hope that you enjoy our house, enter into its spirit enjoying the views of Tomales Bay, the hills, woods and beaches of western Marin and Elephant Mountain bathed in the ever- changing light of the Point Reyes Peninsula, a very special ‘Island in Time’.

I had a great time with my family at Captain's Cabin ! It's conveniently located and it HAS great view, better than pictures !!
We thought the home itself, view, and all looked better than pictures shown. The windows are huge and offering stunning views, pretty much from everywhere. I especially loved the view from kitchen, as whichever I needed to face, I had great view of Bay or the beautiful garden.
It was very clean, even though I'm not that into carpet, it was very well cleaned, and had a very fresh airly feeling. Those are shoes-off area, so I enjoyed laying down in front of fire place and felt very comfortable doing so. Kitchen was super well equipped, impressive collections of herbs and spices. Mostly in good quality and higher end brands. When I forgot to bring my vinegars, I was happy to find something I would buy from the store.
Master bath room is very roomy. It's rustic luxury, so it shows some ages but very clean with huge tub which my parents enjoyed taking bath. 2nd Bathroom are small and very simple but very clean, well done and functional. I appreciated that they had a lot of hooks for towels in both bathroom.
Beds were comfy ! Two small beds were good size for an adult as well. I slept in it and I slept very well.
It totally felt like that we were visiting relative's home....Justinian's grand father's that was. It had that warmth and charm. I think it's wonderful that he is sharing his family history with us.
Only down side was, upon arrival, we immediately noticed that one of the toilet was not working properly. Justinian was very responsive, but was not able to fix immediately. Fortunately that my brother and father could do the quick yet very involved fix, but if I were by myself then it would have been a bit upsetting. I understand that happens although the cleaning crew should have informed Justinian prior to our arrival.
I wish we could have spent longer in the Captain's Cabin. It's an adorable, cozy house with plenty of space. We made lots of use of the fireplace and really enjoyed the views. Great place!
Great Place. Perfect location for exploring Pt Reyes National seashore. Wood stove is cool. Kitchen is stocked. Lots of nice Californiana stuff in the house. Neighbor lives below and can be heard occasionally. Not really a true 2 bedroom as 2nd bedroom is mainly accessed from main BR. Great for kids bedroom. Would love to come again.
Justinian was an awesome host and very flexible! Checkin and checkout were very easy and uncomplicated. The house is really nice and cozy with a beautiful look over the water. We also watched the most beautiful sunrises from our balcony!
I'm sure we'll come back to this amazing place soon!
Great place! Rustic, scenic, spacious!
Justinian's place is amazing. The view is stunning during the day, and the sky is even more beautiful during the night. This was one of the best Airbnb experiences I ever had. The area is amazing, and there's a really nice restaurant called 'Saltwater' that can be reached by foot.
We were just there for one night (coming from SF), but we'll be back for a long weekend as soon as possible. Can't recommend Justinian's Captain Cabin enough!
Hopefully, this is a fluke experience; I'm sure the host is a good person and that the home is lovely, but we can't judge that because we were never able to get into the place. We had a wedding to attend and were checking in around 11:30 PM but they keys were not where they were supposed to be. We looked around as best we could in the dark and we tried calling the host but didn't get through. Luckily, one of use was sober enough to drive and by the time the host called back, we were already on our way back to San Francisco. He apologized profusely and graciously offered a free night some other time as well as a refund. However, the refund inexplicably took nearly a week and needed my prodding to get the ball rolling.
The area is secluded with a beautiful view of the bay. Large living area with a full view of the bay. Really enjoyed our stay.
What a lovely stay we had :) The cabin is very comfortable and the view/deck is outstanding. We also found the location to be an easy distance to any place on the bay. I'd never spent time in Inverness, and even though it is considerably smaller than Pt. Reyes Station. It had everything we needed. The only reason this is not a 5 * is because the second bedroom is sort of tucked into the first one. It does have it's own entrance via the deck, and there is also a fold away bed in living room as an alternative. All-in-all a great gettaway in a home with a real sense of local history to boot!
On a trip from France to visit family and discover California, we were SOOO lucky to reserve this great place, to be seated on the terrace watching the view, looking at the birds (from humming birds to vultures) was an unforgettable experience. The place was extremly confortable with all amenities, and the personal touch of a family house , nice books to consult, and feel at home. Thanks to Justinian.
