The Space

Charming oceanview farmhouse, off the grid getaway in Pahoa, Hawaii.

(PRICE INCLUDES 13.41% daily Hawaii Transient & Excise Tax.)

Located at the end of a private road, our Pohoiki farmhouse (pronounced locally as Po-iki) is a tastefully appointed, off the grid home with magnificent ocean view. The home sits on five cleared acres and is planted with a variety of tropical flowers, exotic fruit trees, and even a testbed for growing tea. This is an off the grid retreat for visitors looking for serenity and a soothing, entirely different sort of Hawai'i vacation.

The house features a full kitchen; separate bedroom; large bathroom with walk-in shower and hand-crafted acacia wood counter; cozy living room with TV/DVD player; a dining room that comfortably seats four to six; and a large lanai featuring magnificent ocean views during the day and sublime stargazing at night.

This is our home, and although work keeps us away from Hawai'i right now we’d like it to be your home as well. Sit on the lanai in the morning sipping coffee and eating papaya from one of the local markets while listening to the slow distant rumble of the ocean. Easily visit the many nearby wonders of Puna: Ahalanui Park warm pond, Pohoiki boat ramp, the Vacationland tide pools, the Kalapana lava flow, Pahoa Town, mystical Red Road...Wander the yard at sunset with a glass of wine while the sun paints the skies over Puna pink. Fall asleep to the nighttime rains…

Because the house is positioned on a hill 400 feet above sea level, the trade winds blow regularly and keep it almost exclusively mosquito-free, which is a bit of a marvel for east Hawai'i.

We are less than 10 minutes by car from old Pahoa Town (restaurants, gas, groceries, wonderful olympic-sized swimming pool) and a mere few miles from the Pohoiki boat ramp and the geothermally heated warm pond. Kalapana is 20 minutes south; the Hilo airport about 35 to 40 minutes north; Kilauea crater about 45 minutes. The location is ideal for exploring the eastern side of the island.

Sometimes it’s difficult to remember that our farmhouse is off the grid, but it is. We have plenty of county water, which is easily and quickly heated by an on-demand propane water heater. The stove and oven are propane as well, and the electrical is solar. The living is convenient and comfortable, however the experience is decidedly more detached – much less energy consumptive, much less plugged-in. Life on Pohoiki Road is in synch with the rythms of the day. Life is simpler here.

  • What a spot! Arvin and Jeff are great hosts and their home is lovely. It feels very private, and is in a great part of the island - not a lot of tourists, and so close to great snorkeling (tide pools) and swimming (black sand beach). We saw wild pigs, many geckos, and heard great frog and bird songs without leaving the property. And the house is very clean and very updated - the shower and porch were especially awesome. We can say enough great things - we hope to return!

  • Great view, privacy and newly renovated! Shower is amazing! It rains a lot on this part of the island but we were lucky to have mostly sunny days. Tidal pools are close and dont forget to look up on the main road as the trees enclose the road and we have never seen that! Only thing missing was a toaster. And dont expect wifi! Oh and the bakery in town is delicious! Its in a warehouse on a backstreet just off the main road.

  • The house was just as described and pictured. Everything was in perfect shape for our arrival including a beautiful vase of fresh flowers on the counter. Jeff knew we had limited time and gave us a ton of excellent suggestions for our stay.

The house is in a perfect setting, quiet and private without being far from home or all the activities we wanted to do. The gardens are beautiful and there are plenty of fruit trees around the property so you'll never go hungry!

We hope we have the good fortune to stay at the property again in the future. All around it was a great stay.

  • We just left Arvin and Jeff house, and we must say everything was perfect. The house is as described, and the view is really amazing.
The driveway is magical, the sunrise from bed was just incredible. We want to go back.
Solar electricity is not an issue if you follow the simple advice that Jeff and Arvin give, and actually we loved this way to be less energy consumptive (and less plugged-in as well !)
We strongly recommend Jeff and Arvin House.

  • We had a wonderful time working with Arvin & Jeff! They were totally welcoming from the very first time we contacted them, and were willing to give us information about the area and what their favorite things to do and places to eat are. They made the entire rental process from check-in to check-out exceptionally easy. Everything about them was laid back and it made our experience so much more relaxing.

I definitely plan to recommend them and their property to any friends and family who visit the area. I also hope that my husband and I will be able to make it back for another visit sometime and stay on their gorgeous property.

Mahalo for a wonderful vacation, Arvin and Jeff!

  • This was such an amazing place! These guys clearly have thought about everything you need off grid and it's a place of love. Also the beaches in this area are the best and most unvisited on the island!

  • This place is very special! It is in the middle of the jungle and really great! The jungle sounds during the night are fascinating and the sunrise in the morning gorgeous! A really great place!

    June 2013
  • The house was just as described and everything we had hoped for; off the beaten path, beautifully maintained, close to activities and most of all a fantastic place to relax. It's peaceful at all hours of the day and the views off the deck are amazing, the first night my wife and I watch a cruise ship sail along the coast as we relaxed with a glass (or two) of wine.

Jeff and Arvin were very nice and had plenty of recommendations to enjoy the area like a local. They pointed us in the direction of fun activities, great restaurants and sites that visitors don't normally get to see.

This is the perfect house to get away from the big cities and enjoy Hawai'i the way the locals do, we will definitely be back!
