Carpenter's Cottage offers peace and relaxation in the heart of the countryside, yet being close to traditional seaside towns like Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich.

The Space

Carpenter's Cottage is easily accessed from the main road. It is secluded but not isolated, tucked away in a peaceful setting surrounded by hedgrows, 600-year-old oak trees and abundant wildlife and close to Stonehouse Farm house. The Farm is now run as an eco-project, with its own water supply, three-pond domestic waste system using reeds. The cottage was originally the carpenter's cottage when Stonehouse Farm was part of the larger Thorington Hall estate.

The cottage has been restored in keeping with its Grade II listing, using sensitive materials and original fixtures and fittings as far as possible. The entrance hall leads firstly to the sitting room with its working coal fire, comfortable sofa and arm chairs and views of greenery to the front and back. The dining room, which was the former kitchen, still has the old range, a lovely focal point for a family meal. Leading off the dining room are the kitchen, with its Aga and good range of storage cupboards, and the main bathroom for the cottage.

Upstairs the first double bedroom with double bed and wooden cot bed and has an ensuite WC. The second double bedroom has a king-size bed and single wooden child's bed. There is a little bedroom in between with a second wooden child's bed.

There are seating areas in front of the cottage, trees and greenery surround it, and beyond is pasture.

Interaction with Guests

We respect your privacy but we are on hand if you need anything.

The Neighborhood

Situated close to the Suffolk coast, Carpenter's Cottage is just 3 miles from the charming seaside towns of Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich, as well as the market town of Halesworth inland, which also has a golf course. At Dunwich there is access to both the beach and the forest. In July, the Latitude music festival is 10 minutes away. And a little further south are the attractions of the RSPB bird sanctuary at Minsmere and Aldeburgh. There are walks and cycle routes throughout the area and along the Blyth River valley to the nearby village of Wenhaston and its pub which serves good local food.

Getting around

The farm is minutes from the main A12 road which is a direct connection to London. There is plenty of parking in front of the cottage, which is set back behind trees off the main drive. If guests wish to arrive by train, the station at Darsham is less than 10 minutes away with a regular connection to London.

  • Me and my 5 friends had a wonderful time at Carpenters Cottage - the cottage itself was perfect and provided everything we needed for a 3 night stay and NYE celebration. Sophia was extremely helpful throughout and helped to provide all the information we needed. Fire wood and coal was also provided which helped us keep the open fire going! Thanks so much Sophia and a happy new year from myself and 5 other very happy customers!!

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this quaint, peaceful and cosy cottage. The surrounding area is very quiet and offers some nice walks. Our christmas stay was made very special by the joys of cooking on the Aga and the comfort of the open fire place. Everything was to our satisfaction and we certainly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a quiet break out of town.

  • This is the most delightful cottage in an exquisite setting and delightfully warm, despite bad weather. Sophia was prompt to communicate and helpful in every way. The cottage is well equipped, spacious and comfortable, but most important is its charm.

  • We had a great stay at the Carpenter's cottage, which is in a great location for Southwold, Walberswick and some great NT sites. The kitchen was well appointed with all the pots, pans and utensils we needed, the living room was comfortable with dvds, books and jigsaws to occupy and the whole place was comfy, clean and warm. Sophie was a pleasure to deal with during the booking and even came to the rescue (via her Mum) when we had a short powercut. The place really made the holiday and we'd have no hesitation in recommending to others.

  • The cottage has charm, in a peaceful rural location. The property
struck us as being rather unloved and with a little tlc could be very
    alluring.

  • The cottage is a beautiful quaint little house tucked away just off the A12 near Southwold, Suffolk. It is clean and comfortable and warm due to an AGA that took us only a day to get used to before we were having perfect pancakes for breakfast. It has a vast collection of DVDs and books in the living room to keep yourself occupied in the down time and the only thing I found a little off putting was the uneven flooring which made walking across the upstairs feel a little like we were drunk. All in all a good place to stay.

  • A lovely house in a great location. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, It fits 2 families perfectly, and there was enough space for everyone. You have to be a dab hand with the Arga though, which we became by the middle of the week, to make a cooked breakfast.

  • Lovely, secluded cottage not too far from Walberswick and Southwold and the Maize Maze and all the other delights of Suffolk. The people on the farm were friendly and charming and welcoming to the three children in our party - let them collect eggs and pat the horses and told them about the Little Owls and how to recognise their call. The cottage is tastefully converted with interesting features. Slightly 'distressed' but we didn't mind the dips in the brick floor. Nice, friendly touches such as children's books and board games and a few videos. We all decided we would like to go there again

  • A very clean and comfortable old cottage set in beautiful woodland away from busy roads but with easy access to A12.
