Frog song was a lovely house situated in a woodsy nook. My husband and furbabies had the best time walking the property and enjoying the local trails and vineyards. We had a wonderful easter break!
Ken was very accommodating and helpful with my last minute request to stay at Frogsong River House. The grounds were well kept and the house itself helps, if not, forces you to relax. Ken ensured I had everything I needed before checking in and provided several dining recommendations to ease the burden of figuring it out myself. The grounds are very close to everything in Nellysford and Roseland including the Wintergreen Ski Resort and Devils Backbone Brewery. I will definitely plan on returning to his home.
First off - Frogsong is a beautiful property with incredible views, and has an excellent location in relation to several breweries and cideries, as well as the Wintergreen resort.
My girlfriend and I got engaged here over Valentine's weekend. However, despite the importance the Frogsong House will always play in our lives, we never be returning. Ken is a warm and friendly host, but there are also many idiosyncrasies that really ruined our trip. On Valentine's night, the power went out in the house due to a snow & wind storm. I don't blame Ken for this - he doesn't control the weather. Throughout the night, we exchanged emails about where we could find candles and lamps. Valentine's dinner was obviously no longer in the cards, we could not use the bathroom since it operated on an electric pump, and with it being 5 degrees outside, staying warm was a serious concern. But we survived, and in the morning the power thankfully came back on. However, it wasn't until the morning that Ken emailed me and told me that there is a backup generator that I could have manually started to power up the house. He waited until the morning to tell us this. So we lost Valentine's night - on a weekend I was planning to propose - for no real reason.
The real problems came after we left Frogsong. Ken charges a $200 maid service (which I believe is absurd considering the price of the rental, but I paid it anyway) on top of the rent. When we left, I specifically told my now-fiance to not do the laundry because I paid good money for a maid service. As soon as we got home, we received an email from Ken stating that we used far too many towels and that he wanted to know how it was possible to use so many towels. I'm sorry, we like things clean? There were stinkbugs EVERYWHERE, and so we cleaned any surfaces we were planning to eat off of. But how is it his prerogative to determine what is and is not an acceptable number of towels? We took a lot of baths and showers (Valentine's weekend, after all). Tough.
I then made the mistake of telling him that we ran into friends and their 2 kids at a ciderery down the road and invited them over for dinner one night. Well, that was beyond occupancy so now I have to send him a $100 check. Absurd. I own 3 successful businesses, including a law firm, and yet his emails lectured me like I was a child: "You need to be more careful with a beautiful house like this."
I'm getting married because of a proposal that took place at this house, but I will never be returning. That should probably say enough.
Well Justin, That is kind of a tough & unfair review. I really am so sorry that you guys had a super wind storm on your big night! We all did! I did respond that night & told you where candles & oil lights were. I also told you about the whole house generator. Told you where it was & said it usually goes on automatically, but you could go out & turn it on!! I told you that & it is listed in the notes....The house has three fireplaces, with a ton of cut wood, plus radiant floors that stay warm for six hours. Just as you said when I talked with you that night....you said it's all fine, nice & warm! Actually, the stove is gas, so you could easily have cooked your meal even with no power. I completely emphasize for the hard luck of the timing of the storm, but you need to take responsibility for your lack of dealing with it. If you feel you are being talked to as a child....don't act like one! After seeing the enormous amount of garbage, used towels & bedrooms both used....I had to ask you if other people stayed at the house, that is when you told me about accidentally bumping into friends & having them for dinner.........I'm not sure why both beds were used & Q Tips etc in the spare (email hidden) just seemed clear that more people used the house than we were paid for. We don't charge extra for a dog & you had indicated your dog would not go on furniture, but there was an absolutely incredible amount of white hair on all couches, pillows & everywhere in the house! As far as stink bugs, as I am sitting here writing this, I can see not a one. They are in the house, a very little bit, as we are in the country, but it is winter & they are for the most part asleep & they are in EVERYONE'S house! I had offered to write a nice review if you wrote a reasonable one. All my communications were just with you.....& it would have stayed that way! I never asked for more money, you offered it!
"It never occurred to me that having friends over for dinner would be an issue, but let me know if you want me to add an extra fee for the added occupancy on Sunday." & I did ask for an extra one hundred, which I thought was pretty fair as an additional four people staying in the house for one night would have been 200................In any case, it was a difficult weekend & yet we would welcome you back & offer you a special deal since you got engaged here!! Love hopefully can triumph over all!
Ken was an amazing host, ringing the phone upon our arrival to welcome us and provide answers to any questions, giving detailed instructions on operations. We enjoyed Frogsong immensely! 7 days of peaceful relaxation, fires every day/night, ping pong, awesome theater with huge selection of movies, sounds from the Rockfish River seranading us, hiking trails and so close to everything, but so private! Our kids want to move there...we're already planning a return. What a magical, wonderful retreat!
Lights, windows, art, plants, cook's kitchen and nature...
Ken went out of his way to ensure my family and I were able to make the most out of our stay at the Frongsong River House. He is truly a gracious host. The house itself was/is a dream. Stunning views, heated floors, functional and attractive wood burning stoves throughout. We hiked, we visited local breweries and vineyards, and at night we watched all of our favorite movies on the home theater system in the basement complete with 1080p TV and blu-ray capable media center PC. We hope to visit Frongsong again. Thanks Ken!
Came here with my girlfriend, and what an amazing experience this was. This is what I love about AirBnB-- finding something very unique. Ken's house in Nellysford is really something special, and Ken was an absolute pleasure to deal with throughout. The short, 3-night trip met my expectations 100%.
- If you enjoy taking walks or jogs outside, there are plenty of well kept paths.
- On sunny days, there is a ridiculous amount of sunlight coming in with all of the windows. The atmosphere is incredible.
- Bumping sound system on the main floor; easily connect it with your phone via auxiliary cord.
- In floor heating was real nice. Takes a bit of time to heat up, but it works very well with 3 different thermostats, and you can use any of the 3 fireplaces to get warm quick.
- Pretty fun to play around with the lighting, turning these on, those off, dimming these, etc. Never had so many lighting options in my life.
- The Natuzzi couches on the main level were very comfortable.
- The bath/Jacuzzi was very legit. At least 3-4 very powerful jets. The dual showers worked out perfectly as well.
- We got some tastings of vodka and gin at the new Silverback distillery, which was about 5-10 mins away. They're in about 100 ABC stores. There's also multiple breweries and wineries within a 15 min drive radius. Right across from their neighborhood, there appears to be a pretty poppin' cidery/restaurant called Bold Rock. We never made it there. We did try the local Mexican restaurant, which was pretty solid if you're in the mood. Yelp was a big help.
We look forward to coming back soon!
What an amazing weekend! FrogSong is so peaceful and healing...it was just what our family needed. The hosts are so kind and helpful. Everything was beyond our expectations.
