The Space

Serpentine Studio is a beautiful and quiet two room studio apartment located in the historic Woolen Mills neighborhood. It is a part of our 1830's brick home and is located only 1.5 miles from downtown Charlottesville and 2.5 miles from the University of Virginia (both can easily accessed by the nearby city bus line).

As a part of our property we offer a private dock with a hammock and deck chair overlooking the Rivanna River, a perfect spot to relax and watch the wildlife. The river setting offers a unique, peaceful environment where one is able to step back from the business of life, while simultaneously remaining close to the center of town. Our house is located near the Rivanna River Trail which winds along the river for 12 miles and offers wonderful opportunities for biking, hiking, birdwatching, and the possibilities of canoeing and fishing.

The studio apartment has its own private and easily accessed entrance, and is beautifully renovated with heart pine floors and exposed brick walls. There is an adjacent breakfast room overlooking the river with a water cooker, coffee maker and small refrigerator. We will provide tea, coffee, and a basic breakfast for your convenience. Both rooms are decorated with original artwork. The owner's nearby sculpture studio offers an artistic setting with sculptures in progress as well as original artwork placed throughout the house and large backyard. The bathroom offers a shower and an antique claw foot bath tub.

  • We had a great stay at the apartment and especially enjoyed the breakfast items they left for us and the decor in the apartment. The art is great! We didn't meet Ninni, but this was fine with us, as we were on a getaway and enjoyed time to ourselves. Great stay!

  • This was a lovely location and the hosts were gracious. the bed was comfortable and the hosts had provided all the amenities we needed. We lived in Charlottesville decades ago and was unaware of the Woolen Mills area when we lived there. I don't think it was being restored yet in mid-late 1980s. They allow guests to use the back yard area which they have arranged with chairs right on the riverbank. Unfortunately the weather was unseasonably cold for mid March & so we only walked out there briefly. Too bad.

  • Ninni's place is incredible. The location is quiet and picturesque, and the space warm and inviting. She seems to have thought of every last detail, from the breakfast food and tea accessories to a great list of restaurant and sightseeing recommendations. I've never seen so much beautiful art (most of it Ninni's, I believe) displayed so tastefully. We hope to stay at Ninni's again soon!

  • This is a really lovely, special place. It is near the river and in a quiet residential part of town. For us, that meant we felt much more relaxed and like we were experiencing the pretty countryside. It does mean it's best to have a car. The studio was beautifully presented, really nice bed, spacious, and the art decor made it unique.

  • Ninni has a unique, well-kept and charming garden-level one bed room apartment filled with art works. The back yard has a hammock and chairs by the river. The apartment is about 10 mins from downtown Charlottesville and a bit further from UVA. The host was prompt in response. There were fruits, yogurt, cereal and coffee for breakfast. We enjoyed our stay.

  • Staying with Ninni was fantastic. The room was great, clean, and had everything a traveler could want (even coffee and bananas). The Woolen Mills neighborhood is beautiful and the dock they have set up by the river would be worth the price alone. Ninni was very accommodating, so much so that we even stayed a third night.

  • This lovely place in Charlottesville was the perfect mix of city and country. Real close to all Charlottesville has to offer, including awesome bagels and great walking. And easy to get away into the country, to the breweries...or to the river right on the property. The hammock is a little slice of heaven, and the art around the studio makes it clear this is a one of a kind place. Ninni was a great host, made it easy as can be to stay. Recommended!

  • We stayed in the studio over our wedding weekend and it was the perfect place to run away to after our reception. The house is on a beautiful street, the backyard is huge and runs down to the river, and the studio itself is full of art.

I am Swedish and my husband is from Los Angeles. We have lived in Charlottesville for the past 25 years and love it. I work as a sculptor and an art instructor but have always dreamt of running a bed and breakfast. Now that our daughter has moved out, the lower part of the house is empty and I am excited to share our great house and yard with other people. We still travel extensively but when we are home, we are looking forward to meet our guests.
