Lodging for travelers seeking a private, peaceful refuge, pleasant cozy apartment w/ private entrance, in a 1/2-acre orchard-garden sanctuary, in a historical rural residential community. with year-round owner-residents upstairs.
Hi & thanks for visiting our listing. Please read some of our guests' reviews and have a look at our photos, they say it better than we can! And Please read our 2 House Rules prior to booking with us--you agree to accept and abide by our House Rules by booking a rez with us.
This is a unique private lodging experience in the Vieques residential countryside, a private apartment on a 1/2-acre fenced property, part of our home residence. You'll be our only guest(s) and have 400 square feet of your own living space with separate private entrance, plus a private terrace on the botanical garden level of our 3-level home. You will find peace here, stress-free relaxation, a romantic hideaway, and an authentic experience with "regular folks" living harmoniously together in Monte Carmelo, a historic Vieques residential community.
The apartment measures 20 by 20 feet; high on a ridge, it's naturally breeze-cooled (no AC), fully screened & mosquito net over the bed, fans in each room. Excellent queen bed, with fold-out futon-sofabed also available on request; bathroom has hot water actually working well ( we promise!). For food prep the apartment includes a coffee maker, toaster, microwave, small fridge, ice chest, with a utility sink and a lovely 2-burner Weber propane grill right outside your entrance, for Caribbean cooking at its best! Located 1.5 miles from the north coast, in our bird-filled botanical garden with 3 species of hummingbirds, plus about 50 examples of ornamentals and fruit.... with great views --from your private terrace with table and chairs-- of Vieques and the surrounding islands/NE Caribbean; in a residential neighborhood, an easy 1/2-mile stroll to a country store and "locals'" restaurant on the main north-south road on our island (Rt. 997).
This lodging opportunity will be a lovely refuge/hangout for you if you want a local-culture perspective in an informal casual country-lifestyle Vieques setting with privacy; if you want peaceful personal space to unwind, left entirely alone until you want to do something "out and about" on Vieques. If and when you want any assistance or suggestions, we're living upstairs and happy to help you plan your activities around our island. If you want your own casual tranquil private sanctuary, to unwind in a fenced half-acre botanical garden neither remote nor secluded but "off the tourist path" and fairly close to everything, you'll find it here.
And again....Please be sure to read our important notes and House Rules before booking a reservation with us, so we'll all know we're on the same page of music and harmonizing from the start. This information will help you synchronize your vacation goals and expectations with "reality" in Vieques and at our home. Thanks!
Our "shared areas" include a flower and bird-filled patio on the level above your apartment, plus a covered terrace on our top floor, perfect for inclement weather outdoor lounging about-- two areas where close encounters with your hosts may occasionally occur.
Interaction with Guests
This is our full-time home, and you'll be aware of us upstairs from time to time, while your apartment and botanical garden will always be your own separate gated and private refuge.
We're in Monte Carmelo, a historic residential community on the high ground in the center of Vieques, with fantastic views of surrounding islands, sparkling water in all directions, and friendly people all around.
If you want to rent your own vehicle for transportation around Vieques, you'd better reserve that rental vehicle-- bike, scooter, compact auto or 4WD Jeep-- as far in advance as possible because these are all limited on Vieques and it may be impossible (especially Dec-May) to rent anything on short notice!
Note well: An automobile, however, is a personal choice & certainly not an absolute necessity here; several other easy & fun options exist on our small island: 125cc scooters; bicycles; walking and hitching are safe, easy and free in Vieques; and we have good reliable cheap island-wide taxi service plus semi-regular public van transportation along the primary roads.
We strongly encourage our guests to give your personal transportation desires some thought during your planning phase, prior to arrival.
Other Things to Note
Our goal as hosts is to reduce any potential misunderstandings and increase harmony for all of us in our future time together. We want our guests to enjoy your visit to Vieques, and with us. You'll find us informal, casual, definitely non-invasive, amiably flexible and open-minded about coordinating with you to enhance your vacation in Vieques within the framework of existing Laws.
We sincerely hope the following notes will interest you, help you make workable plans for your vacation, and help us all avoid unexpected surprises and potential disappointments.
1. Vieques is a small island in the tropical zone of our hemisphere, with a few small critters / bugs around, small lizards climbing the walls, oh My! and other such things we all need to be aware of, because they could be potentially scary or even dangerous. If you have any concerns related to these topics, please discuss them with us before booking!
2. Our country home is a Work In Progress...that is to say, we are maintaining and improving our Dream Castle as you read this and it is not entirely finished. Your apartment is on the lower level down in the orchard, and it is entirely finished and sweet as pie. We don't do any work on our property, while we are hosting our guests, that could possibly have any negative impact on your tranquil ambiance. Your gaze may fall upon some aspect of our entire home & garden project that seems "incomplete." We hope that isn't going to be a serious concern for you.
3. With the world's most expensive electricity, and being as Green as we can, we utilize the local design concept of open interior spaces to provide air circulation /ventilation for natural cooling, with supplemental fans. Thus the bathroom of your apartment has no solid door, but rather a sliding curtain to enhance both privacy and air circulation.
Tropical country living is different from urban life in temperate climates. We sincerely hope these notes enable you to anticipate our reality and to enjoy your stay at our home even more when you arrive here.
4. We welcome kids over 10 if they are closely supervised by attentive responsible parents/guardians who have read and understood these notes, but please discuss this with us prior to booking, if applicable.
5. The Official Hurricane Season down here in the eastern Caribbean is from June 1st through the end of October. We are experienced hurricane survivors and our home is a very solid and strong concrete structure. In the unlikely event of a serious storm during your stay in Vieques, you'll be safe here with us.
If you have wondered about living in the tropics, here is an authentic local-culture experience, an opportunity to live and wander in a friendly safe residential neighborhood and see the possibilities with your own eyes...talk about buying, building, etc with people who are actually living the Caribbean dream here in Vieques!
Booking a rez with us indicates you have read and understood our 2 House Rules and agree to follow them while you are with us.
1. Absolutely no "illegal substances" of any kind will be allowed onto our property.
2. We ask you to appreciate and respect our privacy: If you meet people during your vacation in Vieques, please join up with them elsewhere in Vieques, at the multiple available venues for socializing et al; do not bring them back to our property with you for any reason.
We enforce these two House Rules in order to protect the privacy, safety, and security of ourselves, yourselves, and all our future guests. Thanks!
We just got back from our four-night stay with Chris and Elisabeth in Vieques and we miss it already...deeply. As hosts, they made our stay better than we thought possible. Their ad very accurately portrays the apartment and property, and all the details that the other reviewers mentioned (fresh fruit from the garden, jam, flowers, rides to and from the ferry/airport) made us feel very much at home, yet we still had complete privacy. This property allows you to experience a rural, nature-filled side of the caribbean. The view from the garden is fantastic day and night...so many stars! We did NOT rent a car, it was a risk we decided to take, and we LOVED it!! Apparently many tourists had left by the time we arrived, but the locals went out of their way to give us rides to everywhere we wanted, from the far end of the beaches in the wildlife reserve to the mosquito pier. The longest we had to wait for a ride was 15 minutes and some drivers stopped to offer a ride even before we put our thumbs out. We never called a taxi and used a publico once. We saved money and met people from all over the world and got really great recommandations for local spots. If you are the least bit improvisational when you travel, I recommend hitch hiking! I made our experience unique and memorable! great snorkeling at the pier! all the beaches were mindblowing! El Resuelve is a lunch spot near this apartment where we had our best meal in Puerto Rico! I can't wait to come back and bring my whole family
We do try, Nathan, and it is so gratifying and heartwarming to hear from you (and you have a real WAY with words!) that our efforts to create a unique and special sanctuary on this barely-discovered jewel of an island where we live have been appreciated by kindred spirits. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us, and please know that nothing will make us happier than to welcome you back to our dream castle again in the always-a-mystery Future!
We stayed at Chris and Elisabeths for 4 nights. Amazing Place, fantastic vies and a warm, and very velcomming host couple!
Chris met us at the airport and took us around town before taking us to the apartment and Elisabeth had homemade ham and frugt from her wonderful graden ready.
We absolutely loved their place. One day we were supposed to to go to the Beach but decided to stay in the garden for a full day.
We did not rent a car. Coming back to Vieques i would. Although locals and turists alike were nice to pick us up when we were hitchhiking, the other option would have been easier.
I would HIGHLY recommend to give Vieques and especially Chris and Elisabeths Place a try. We were close to staying permanently!
We had a fantastic stay with Chris and Elisabeth. It was one of my favorite spots that I have stayed with Airbnb. We enjoyed eating breakfast outside with a gorgeous view of the hills of Vieques and the ocean too. The yard is full of fragrant plants and flowers with hummingbirds flying around. It was such a treat to be able to pick fresh papaya from one of their trees. We made sure to be back in time for sunset so we could watch them every evening from the porch upstairs. The apartment was cozy and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. They went above and beyond to make sure we felt at home and the extra little details were very much appreciated (fresh tropical flowers from the yard in the apartment, cutting aloe from their garden when we came back sunburned after a day at the beaches, homemade gooseberry jam in the fridge, etc). They were superb hosts and we would highly recommend them. If we ever find ourselves back in Vieques we hope to stay with Elisabeth and Chris again.
Beautiful home in a quiet Vieques neighborhood. Chris& Elizabeth were extremely accommodating and had a great depth of knowledge of the area. The house was beautiful and very clean. Would definitely love to come back!
Wow! We have traveled some...this place and our hosts are beyond great. The view is lovely and then we see our host skipping down the garden to share more with us. Homemade jam and jelly. passion fruit, papaya, african plum, cherries, this is care and love. Oh and there is the awesome new grill! We had a great stay!
We had a wonderful time at Chris and Elisabeth's tropical sanctuary. The apartment was immaculate and well-appointed and Chris and Elisabeth couldn't have been more attentive and hospitable. The setting/location is ideal: on a hill-top overlooking the sea and countryside and within striking distance to gorgeous beaches and both of the island's main towns. It is private and peaceful AND really convenient- a perfect combination! I recommend without reservation and look forward to our next visit.
We were welcomed with open arms and guidance to all the wonderful things we could do on Vieques! Map included with all the details of places to play! The suite was sweet. spacious and clean- and the birds and roosters, and horses, and pigs, and dogs, and coqui's were all a welcome to the senses! The location is convenient to all places, but a car is needed. Views are spectacular, and food is fabulous! Elizabeth provided home grown fruits that added a nice taste in our mouths! And we were lucky enough to experience her home made jam. When we needed anything, they were there to assist and advise.Very friendly and helpful, and hospitable. Their 2 dogs are friendly but not invasive. We will come again bien sur! Merci beaucoup.Rachelle et Gunter.
We're a knowledgeable & friendly French/American married couple who moved to Vieques after several decades of travelling & guiding in about 80 different countries; we also have a combined total of about 35 years of living in Puerto Rico and all around the Caribbean. Now we are having active lives full-time in Vieques building a house of stone, a Tuscany-like adventure in tropical America, with lizards everywhere, growing food, loving year-round water sports -- AND we're offering unique private lodging, Caribbean hospitality, assistance, and friendship to our worldwide community of fellow travelers, voyagers, and guests, while we hold in our thoughts all the people who helped and befriended us as we have wandered our planet individually and together.
This is our "give back" time to our community of world wanderers, and we welcome all of you who believe in peaceful coexistence.
