Here is a unique private lodging experience in the Vieques residential countryside, a private apartment on a 1/2-acre fenced property, part of our home residence. We have lived here full-time for 6 years. You'll be our only guest(s) and have 400 square feet of your own living space with separate private entrance, plus a private terrace on the botanical garden level of our 3-level home. You will find peace here, and an authentic experience of how "regular folks" live together in Monte Carmelo, a historic Vieques residential community.

The efficiency apartment measures 20 by 20 feet; high on a ridge, it's naturally breeze-cooled (no AC), fully screened with mosquito net over the bed and fans in each room. You'll have an excellent queen bed, with fold-out futon-sofabed also available, a bathroom with hot water actually working well ( we promise!); also wifi; and for limited food prep a coffee maker, toaster, microwave, small fridge, ice chest, utility sink-- with full kitchen privileges upstairs for those inclined to cook more elaborately on vacation; located 1.5 miles from the north coast, in our bird-filled botanical garden (3 species of hummingbirds, plus about 50 examples of ornamentals and fruit!) with great views (from your private terrace with table and chairs) of Vieques and the surrounding islands/NE Caribbean, in a residential neighborhood, an easy 1/2-mile stroll to a country store and "locals'" restaurant on the main north-south road on our island (Rt. 997).
This lodging opportunity will be a lovely home-base hangout for you if you want a local-culture perspective in an informal casual country-lifestyle Caribbean setting with privacy; if you want to be quiet, left entirely alone until you want to do something out and about on Vieques. And if you want any assistance or suggestions, we can help you plan your activities around Vieques because we are live-here property owners on the floor above you. If you want your own casual tranquil private sanctuary to relax, in a fenced half-acre botanical garden neither remote nor secluded but "off the tourist path" and fairly close to everything, you'll find it here.

A little more about us....we're a knowledgeable & friendly married couple who moved to Vieques after several decades of travelling & guiding in about 80 different countries. We are French and American people with a combined total of about 30 years of living in Puerto Rico and all around the Caribbean. We are having active lives full-time in Vieques building a house of stone, a Tuscany-like adventure in the Caribbean with lizards everywhere, growing food, having fun in the tropics-- positive and proactive facilitators, happy to answer questions and help resolve challenges. This is our "give back" time to our community of world travelers, and we welcome all of you who believe in peaceful coexistence.

And again.....Please be sure to read our important notes and House Rules at the tabs above (you'll need a full-screen computer for this) before booking a reservation with us, so we'll all know we're on the same page of music and harmonizing from the start. This information will help you synchronize your vacation goals and expectations with "reality" in Vieques and at our home. Thanks & Travel well, travel smart!
Elisabeth & Chris

  • Our stay with Chris and Elisabeth was more than we could have ever hoped for. The views from the house were beautiful, the apartment was adorable and clean, and the hosts were kind, informative, and caring. You might develop jealous sentiments of their beautiful life and surroundings but they're willing to share it and point you in all the right directions. They always offered their help and made us feel comfortable and confident to navigate our new surroundings. The neighborhood is more secluded but easy to get to wether your rent a car or take the publicos to right down the hill. Again, just perfect.

  • We had such a great time in Vieques. The Elisabeth and Chris were warm and friendly, very accommodating and went out of their way to make us feel at home. The place was clean and as described. STUNNING garden views, breakfast on the patio was such a treat each morning. Anxious to return ASAP!

  • My wife and I came Vieques for the first for a quick getaway for our wedding anniversary. Elizabeth and Chris not only picked us up, but surprised us by decorating the room and having a bottle of champagne waiting for us for our anniversary with a personalized note. These two were simply wonderful from offering suggestions (rent a car, where to go, what to see), to good conversations, to saying good morning, and providing tips on where to eat. This trip was a perfect balance between my wife and I having our own private time and socializing.

The apartment is just as described, well ventilated, airy and completely bug proof. We found the kitchenette to be completely sufficient to stay for a week (though we ate out a lot and enjoyed it). Small grocery store is within walking distance. We both highly recommend staying here.

Thank you Elizabeth and Chris for a wonderful stay.

  • Chris and Elizabeth were amazing before we even arrived. Chris went out of his way to answer any questions, pick us up at the ferry, and even secure us 2 scooters. Both hosts were knowledgable of their island home. Elizabeth even gave us her last ear candle when one of us ran into some eat trouble. Always willing to hang out, chat, help, and make sure our stay was the best it could be. From restaurant recommendations, to beach locations, to helping us navigate, they made us feel like we were at home. Very very thoughtful hosts. Also gave us space when we were ready for some independence. The best experience out of 6 airbnb rentals this trip!!!!!! Thanks again guys!

  • We had an amazing time in Vieques, and staying at Elisabeth and Chris' homestead was the perfect home-base for our little island vacation. The apartment is the bottom floor of their three story house, and has access to a gorgeous private botanical garden with lots of beautiful flowers and fruit trees, all cultivated with love by Lis and Chris. The apartment itself is great for two to three people. If you choose to stay here don't be surprised if your wonderful hosts leave you fresh cut flowers and fruit from their garden. Aside from the wonderful accommodations and the mountaintop view (which is perfect to watch the sunset), Elisabeth and Chris are thoughtful and caring hosts. You will not leave disappointed!

  • After researching the island and speaking with friends who have visited personally we were thrilled to begin our journey to Vieques; pictures never do justice to the beauty of any one place but we can say with confidence, Vieques is AMAZING and will not disappoint (more on the island to follow). Our trip was made all the more enjoyable by our incredible hosts, Chris and Elisabeth. Even in the early stages of planning our travels, Chris and Elisabeth were incredibly helpful, assisting us in ferry travel, food options, and even our choice of car rental (we highly recommend reserving a Jeep EARLY – there are limited quantities on the island and they sell out quick). Chris and Elisabeth were flexible and accommodating of our loosely planned itinerary, only asking for a heads up on our departure from Fajardo so that they could meet us at the ferry dock to welcome us to the island. After loading up the car, Chris jumped right (email hidden) to the island, pointing out the local spots and giving us our bearings. He also gave us a map which we used the entire week (now it exists in shambles but it will not be thrown away!). We grabbed our car rental and followed him back to the apartment to get moved in. (We used Coqui, which was a great experience and having a car allowed us full access to the island and was totally worth the crazy high rental price). Back at the apartment, Chris and Elisabeth gave us a tour of the property and got us settled in. Their house is located in the hills and the view of the ocean is absolutely incredible. The apartment was bright and clean, (wonderful smelling thanks to Elisabeth’s fresh flowers) and had the best private patio among the garden for morning coffee or evening drinks. Vieques is a magical island, and Chris and Elisabeth provided the perfect complement. They were quick to offer everything from advice on beaches, restaurants or activities, to water, towels, and fresh fruit from their garden. They always had a warm smile and a friendly greeting, whether they were having us up to their terrace for appetizers and a drink, or simply waving hello as we loaded up for the beach. We were looking for a quiet escape and Chris and Elisabeth could not have been more respectful of that. This was a very special place, and one that we hope to return to in the future.

  • We just returned home from a lovely stay at Elisabeth & Chris's awesome home! What a great place. First off, they accommodated us on short notice (thanks!) which was really appreciated. These hosts are some of the kindest we've met in our travels. They will go out of their way to make you comfortable and if your scooter breaks down, they will offer you a ride :) Elisabeth met us at the Ferry terminal and gave us a wonderfully detailed tour, pointing out landmarks so we wouldn't get lost, and even stopped at the grocery store so we could eat at 9pm! She then happily dropped us at the scooter rental the next day. Really, we didn't expect to have them go out of their way, but they are very happy to do it! About their place: It's really big, if you know anything about island living, this place is super sized compared to most. The bed is comfy, towels and sheets are clean, shower is hot, and the kitchenette is very useful! Since the house is up high, there's a fantastic breeze, you don't even think about a/c. The view from the terrace is just breathtaking, and peaceful. I could sit there all day... but no, there's so much exploring to do on their beautiful island! We never stopped "going". Our trip was not long enough to see all it has to offer. If you plan to visit Vieques, you will not be dissappointed by it's beauty. We've been all over the world, but this place is special. If you are passing through the listings, asking yourself if this is the one, IT IS! We highly recommend this place to travelers. It just doesn't get any better. A big thank you to our hosts, our appreciation couldn't possibly be expressed in this short note :) All Our Best, Pat & Michelle, Ft Lauderdale FL
Recommendations: Rent a scooter from Maritza's rental, they are very accommodating, even coming to replace our scooter on a sunday after 8pm.

  • Lovely ground floor apartment - plenty of space for the 3 of us. We enjoyed the great views from the patio for dawn, breakfast, and sunsets. We appreciated the fresh fruits and the coffee that awaited us. Chris and Elisabeth were friendly and informative.

High on a ridge, I highly recommend a rental car. (I'd thought about relying on bikes, publicos, and taxis - at best, it would have consumed too much time and energy.)

Due to biology and moonlight, bio-bay was not luminescent but at under half-price via Abe's, moonlight kayak tour and great tour guide were a good value.

  • Elisabeth & Chris were the most wonderful of hosts and truly incredible people. Their place is perfectly located between Isabel Segunda and Esperanza; and is clean, peaceful, and very beautiful. I would recommend this AirBnB to anyone traveling to Vieques & we certainly hope to return ourselves one day. (Thank you so sincerely.)

  • As a single traveler, I couldn't have picked a better place to stay. Elisabeth and Chris are very interesting people and were extremely accommodating. Their place was quiet and relaxing which was just what I was looking for. They helped orient me around the island, get groceries, and let me cook with them in their kitchen. I highly recommend staying!
