Here is a unique private lodging experience in the Vieques residential countryside, a private apartment on a 1/2-acre fenced property, part of our home residence. We have lived here full-time for 6 years. You'll be our only guest(s) and have 400 square feet of your own living space with separate private entrance, plus a private terrace on the botanical garden level of our 3-level home. You will find peace here, and an authentic experience of how "regular folks" live together in Monte Carmelo, a historic Vieques residential community.

The efficiency apartment measures 20 by 20 feet; high on a ridge, it's naturally breeze-cooled (no AC), fully screened with mosquito net over the bed and fans in each room. You'll have an excellent queen bed, with fold-out futon-sofabed also available, a bathroom with hot water actually working well ( we promise!); also wifi; and for limited food prep a coffee maker, toaster, microwave, small fridge, ice chest, utility sink-- with full kitchen privileges upstairs for those inclined to cook more elaborately on vacation; located 1.5 miles from the north coast, in our bird-filled botanical garden (3 species of hummingbirds, plus about 50 examples of ornamentals and fruit!) with great views (from your private terrace with table and chairs) of Vieques and the surrounding islands/NE Caribbean, in a residential neighborhood, an easy 1/2-mile stroll to a country store and "locals'" restaurant on the main north-south road on our island (Rt. 997).
This lodging opportunity will be a lovely home-base hangout for you if you want a local-culture perspective in an informal casual country-lifestyle Caribbean setting with privacy; if you want to be quiet, left entirely alone until you want to do something out and about on Vieques. And if you want any assistance or suggestions, we can help you plan your activities around Vieques because we are live-here property owners on the floor above you. If you want your own casual tranquil private sanctuary to relax, in a fenced half-acre botanical garden neither remote nor secluded but "off the tourist path" and fairly close to everything, you'll find it here.

A little more about us....we're a knowledgeable & friendly married couple who moved to Vieques after several decades of travelling & guiding in about 80 different countries. We are French and American people with a combined total of about 30 years of living in Puerto Rico and all around the Caribbean. We are having active lives full-time in Vieques building a house of stone, a Tuscany-like adventure in the Caribbean with lizards everywhere, growing food, having fun in the tropics-- positive and proactive facilitators, happy to answer questions and help resolve challenges. This is our "give back" time to our community of world travelers, and we welcome all of you who believe in peaceful coexistence.

And again.....Please be sure to read our important notes and House Rules at the tabs above (you'll need a full-screen computer for this) before booking a reservation with us, so we'll all know we're on the same page of music and harmonizing from the start. This information will help you synchronize your vacation goals and expectations with "reality" in Vieques and at our home. Thanks & Travel well, travel smart!
Elisabeth & Chris

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Lovely ground floor apartment - plenty of space for the 3 of us. We enjoyed the great views from the patio for dawn, breakfast, and sunsets. We appreciated the fresh fruits and the coffee that awaited us. Chris and Elisabeth were friendly and informative.

High on a ridge, I highly recommend a rental car. (I'd thought about relying on bikes, publicos, and taxis - at best, it would have consumed too much time and energy.)

Due to biology and moonlight, bio-bay was not luminescent but at under half-price via Abe's, moonlight kayak tour and great tour guide were a good value.

  • Elisabeth & Chris were the most wonderful of hosts and truly incredible people. Their place is perfectly located between Isabel Segunda and Esperanza; and is clean, peaceful, and very beautiful. I would recommend this AirBnB to anyone traveling to Vieques & we certainly hope to return ourselves one day. (Thank you so sincerely.)

  • As a single traveler, I couldn't have picked a better place to stay. Elisabeth and Chris are very interesting people and were extremely accommodating. Their place was quiet and relaxing which was just what I was looking for. They helped orient me around the island, get groceries, and let me cook with them in their kitchen. I highly recommend staying!

  • Elizabeth and Chris were amazing hosts. Their home and their guest space are just incredibly lovely and tranquil. This was the perfect place to stay during our vacation. They were warm and welcoming, and very helpful in helping us get oriented on the island.

I saw dozens of hummingbirds and bananaquits in their flowering trees and vines, and when we came back at night with sunburns, Elizabeth gave us cuts of her aloe plant from the garden.

I honestly can't wait to get back. I can't imagine anything better. The view, their garden, and every single thing about it was just idyllic.

  • First of all, Chris and Elisabeth are amazing hosts. They're friendly without being intrusive and just genuinely wanted us to enjoy our stay, encouraging us to make ourselves at home. Like the house itself, they're unpretentious and welcoming-it helped that we bonded with Chris over Thomas Pynchon on the ride from the airport! They offered not only the use of their kitchen, but also their pantry of dried spices, limes, etc., and some homemade yogurt for the next morning.

While you're staying in rooms attached to their house, there is a separate entrance and we never felt too crowded. There is a private patio which is beautiful. The rooms themselves are quite comfortable - enormous bathroom - and have a relaxed and homey feel. The only inconvenience is that I found the bedroom a little hot at night, but nothing too bad if you're used to sleeping with a fan. Overall, Elisabeth and Chris give a really accurate impression of what to expect from their description. If you're deciding where on the island to stay as well, everything's so close together that it doesn't really matter you're not staying in one of the towns (in fact, we preferred being away from the more touristy Esperanza). We'd return in a second! Thanks again!

  • We had a fabulous time on Vieques Island and staying with Chris and Elizabeth was definitely part of it ! We highly recommend their sweet "room" for a lovely stay over while touring the island. It was clean and bright and sunny and just as they described it. They surprised us with a "kitchen" area with a small refrig and cutting boards on a table and coffee maker with complimentary Puerto Rican coffee and bananas from their own trees. Birds and hummingbirds and many fruit trees and lots of sky surrounded our quiet homey lodging.....which also included a sitting area inside and outside. Our hosts were pleasant and friendly and eager to share information about the island, it's history, and where to go.

  • This property is located in the hilly and picturesque Monte Carmelo neighborhood of Vieques. The accommodations were comfortable, clean and accurately described. I particularly enjoyed the outside private area adjacent to the unit, which includes a well-tended garden. The view of the surrounding area and out to the water from that area is amazing, and the comfortable table and chairs was a great place to read, take morning coffee, and enjoy an evening sunset.

I really enjoyed meeting Chris and Elisabeth. They are the type of folks I would want to hang out with here in Chicago -- friendly, wise, well-traveled and kind. Their recommendations as to how to get around the island and access the beaches were practical and welcome. My stay on their property exceeded all expectations. Without hesitation, I would stay with them again!

  • Elisabeth and Chris were fabulous hosts! The apartment was nestled amongst gorgeous gardens and was a lovingly decorated home. Don't miss the spectacular view from the top of the house! Elisabeth had fresh guava jam in our fridge when we arrived, and lent us the blender (along with frozen mango from their garden and homemade yogurt!!) so we could make smoothies. As it's mentioned, there is no kitchen and this was really helpful for our breakfasts. They went above and beyond to help us navigate the island the first day we didn't have a car. We felt fortunate to have a night we could all BBQ- it was great to get to know them a bit more as they both have wonderful life stories. We truly had a most wonderful stay here. Thank you both for all of your hospitality!! Besos to Lulu and Sweetie pie Suzy. Thanks again for everything.

  • Hard to add more accolades for Chris and Elizabeth and their place. The apartment has all you need for a wonderful, relaxing stay and they are perfect hosts; great people, with lots of local knowledge and a willingness to help you find and get to what you need. They nicely met us at the ferry and Chris took several opportunities to give us quick tours (even offering a trip to the dump and the nearby wonderful purple beach). The views from the patio are the best way to start the day, along with jelly and fruits from their garden. We hated to leave and hope they will have us back. While you can certainly get around by public buses, taxis and hitching, we found it was nice to have a car for a few days to explore some out of the way places.

Ooooh, wish you hadn't mentioned the dump run. Now everyone's going to want that!

Book i forvejen i højsæson. Sjovt at flyve til øen, men bådforfindelsen var også udmærket. Uden bil vil det også gå men vi anbefaler at leje bil/eller scooter.
