  • Hi airbnb,

I would love to make this review public. Here is my feedback on La Tropicale.

Subject: Be aware, Arno Demoy does not honor the cancellation policy and does not refund your money

I'm writing this review to warn everyone... on 12/23/13 at 8:55 AM I canceled the reservations I had for 12/24 and 12/25. As per his cancellation policy I should get a refund, I"m copying the policy at the bottom of the email. Instead a refund I got a rude message from Arno. I did send him a nice message reminding him of the cancellation policy but I never heard from him. Now I'm working with AMEX to stop the payment and writing reviews on AirBnB . I hope that AirBnB removes him from the listing.

Cancellation policy: "For a full refund, cancellation must be made a full 24 hours prior to listing's local check in time (or 3:00 PM if not specified) on the day of check in."

  • La Tropicale is a great little bed and breakfast -- if you want to be in Samara, however, it's not that close. Probably a 15 minute drive. But, the beach at Puerto Carrillo is really nice too (only there can be crocodiles!). Arno's place is a short walk from this beach.

The place itself is simple and looks home built, but it was clean and had everything we needed. Our cabina even had a small outdoor kitchen, which was perfect. The pool is outstanding, and Arno let us use his grill to cook some fish we bought from the local supermarket. We watched movies outside on his projector over the bar -- it was fantastic!

I wish we would have stayed here for an extra night for sure! The beaches in this area aren't rocky like others on the Nicoya Peninsula.

    Thanks Arno!

  • We had a great stay at La Tropicale and got a warm welcoming from Arno with a nice drink, which was needed after a long and hot drive. The house we lived in were nice and clean, and he has the best beds in CR. The beach that is just 200 m away is one of the most beautyfull we have seen in CR as well. Not so many people, and pure heaven. The sunset is worth millions. Thank you Arno for giving us a great experience in our last night at the beach.

  • First of all, Arnaud is a delightful guy who goes out of his way to share stories, advice, and do whatever he can for his guests. Even if you're hard-to-please, you can only do so badly if your host really cares about your well-being.

Secondly, for the price we got, we were happy. We had a room in a side casita, with two queen beds and a private bath. The right term here is "rustic". It looks like he put it together himself, maybe with some amateur help. Some examples: the shower isn't set apart from the bathroom by anything other than a curtain and a (fixed) lattice door panel. To turn the shower on, you twist a knob that's been exposed by the shower-wall tiles being cut away, to reveal the inner wall. There was lots of dust under the beds, no glasses (or hot-water knobs) by the sink, and the whole establishment was hard to find, with very minimal signage directing you once in town (we had to have a local guy at the deli drive us there leading the way himself).

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I can tell you what we enjoyed about our stay. My girlfriend and I had a rough drive down from Liberia and were met by Arnaud and Alain, who brought us each big tropical-fruit cocktails. The place has been made to feel like a jungle, with dense palm trees all around, and two beautiful house parrots running loose. I wish I could post pictures with this review. Breakfast was some *delicious* fresh tropical fruit, plus cereal, bread, and fresh jam. I've had much worse even at professional hotels - Arnaud clearly puts a high value on breakfast.

There were several beautiful pools, including one private to our casita, and lots of places to lounge, sit around and drink or smoke, or even cook. If you are bringing a car, they make room to park inside their gates. If you need to go somewhere, Arnaud is very ready with suggestions tailored to your tastes. And the best part - he got right back to me with our reservation request.

Conclusion: If you're looking for a "luxury" experience, this isn't it. But if you want an inexpensive stay in a place that's exotic and has all the necessities, La Tropicale is a good choice.
