This quiet and cozy house is located in the woods at the renowned Ten Apple Farm. Centrally located in Southern ME, we're just a short drive from Portland, lakes, ski areas, LL Bean and more! On the farm you can meet and interact with our herd of goats, sheep, pigs and chickens, learn to milk, collect eggs, and arrange on of our famous goat hikes!

The space
Welcome to the Woods House at Ten Apple Farm! The house is both a Maine woods getaway and a farm retreat. Nestled in 17 acres of woods, just down the hill from our farmhouse, this charming Cape was where Margaret's dad retired to after 40 years as an English professor. The decor is part literary lair, part Wes Anderson, with many touches that reference Professor Hathaway's idiosyncratic taste.

Set at the end of a 400-foot private drive, with a lawn that gives way to blackberry brambles and woods, The Woods House is quiet and private. Our second-growth woods are perfect for hiking and snow-shoeing, and are great for wildlife watching. Keep an eye out for Mr. Brown, our resident owl, and the family of deer who frequent the lawn at dusk. Guests are invited to visit the farm where we milk our herd of alpine dairy goats twice daily, make cheese, and keep chickens, woolly pigs, sheep, turkeys, a large garden and small orchard. The house comfortably sleeps six in 3 bedrooms. There are 2 double beds and a trundle bed that can be configured to one or two single beds. There is a futon in the living room that can sleep two more, and for very large groups a second futon mattress that can be put on the floor in the master bedroom could sleep 2 more.

Guest access
The house is completely private, and you will have total access. The well equipped kitchen includes Kitchen Aid mixer, heavy-bottomed cook's pans, and assorted gadgetry. Feel free to poke around the cabinets and use what you find. The kitchen is stocked with spices, coffee and tea, and some staples. Apologies for the electric stove—it’s on our list of future improvements.

All guests are welcomed with fresh goat milk and cheese from the farm, as well as eggs from our chickens. There's almost always preserves from the farm, and really lucky guests, who time their arrival to a baking day, might get treated to Margaret's delicious homemade scones or other baked delights.

Feel free to peruse the extensive library (heavily weighted toward masculine literary classics, many annotated by Professor Hathaway). Copies of our books about goats and the Maine food scene are available for sale -- check them out on our website, or the house coffee table.

In addition to the library, there is a collection of DVDs, old vinyl records, board games and puzzles. There is wifi. There is access to a washer and dryer for those guests staying more than a few days.

The house is not baby-proofed, but we do have many amenities for families with small children, such as a pack-and-play, a booster high chair, potty seat, and ergo carrier. We also have baby gates and a wrought iron fence that can be installed around the wood stove--just let us know in advance. If there's anything you need, please don't hesitate to ask!

Margaret Hathaway lives with her family on Ten Apple Farm, a homestead in southern Maine, where they raise dairy goats and poultry, tend a large garden and small orchard, make cheese, and give occasional workshops on basic homesteading skills. She is the author of The Year of the Goat, a memoir which chronicles her journey with husband Karl Schatz from New York City, where she was a manager of the Magnolia Bakery, to their home on the farm. The couple lives with their three daughters, Charlotte, Beatrice and Sadie; their dog, Godfrey; cat, truffle; rabbit, JT; and an ever growing group of animals. She is also the author of Living With Goats, The Food Lovers Guide to Maine, and Portland Maine Chef's Table Cookbook. Karl Schatz is the Director of Aurora Photos, an international stock photography agency based in Portland, Maine. He is a small-scale farmer and sustainable agriculture advocate. His photographic exhibit, American Goat, documents the goat industry in America and has educated thousands about the wonderful and diverse world of goats. He is President of the Board of Levey Day School, Portland's Community Jewish Day School where their daughters attend, and leader of Portland’s Slow Food Convivium.
