Hostal Puerto Engabao is the only place in the Playas-Engabao area run by local surfers. The hostel features clean & spacious rooms with fans & mosquito nets. At the moment we do prefer that you pay upon arrival rather than over the internet.

The space
Hostal Puerto Engabao is the only place in the Playas-Engabao area run by local surfers. The hostel features clean & spacious rooms with fans & mosquito nets, a fully equipped kitchen, BBQ, WIFI, laundry, common area, garden & hammocks. Public transportation to nearby breaks & beaches.

Guest access
The rooms are spacious & clean, yet rustic in style, with mostly 100 % cotton linens. The kitchen is cleaned twice a day and is complete with a blender for those smoothie lovers. We have a BBQ outdoors & fresh fish & shrimp is readily available to buy, directly from the small artisanal fishing boats. If you don’t know how to clean fish we can show you! As for eating out there are several local restaurants close by that offer typical Ecuadorian dishes at an affordable price, as well as an unfinished rooftop terrace with a great view of the spectacular sunsets that Puerto Engabao has to offer.

The only hostel in Engabao run by surfers for surfers! Located in the small fishing village of Puerto Engabao and is along with General Villamil Playas the closest beach to Ecuador's biggest city Guayaquil. We try to interact with the guests as much as we can, and take them surfing to other waves around the area when there is enough swell for them to work. We can provide you with info on where to eat/buy food, in our village and in Playas where we do our weekly shopping.

Other things to note
Our family of four includes Daniel (a Playas local) and Nadija from the Swedish surf town of Varberg (yes, it exists), as well as two little ones. Daniel has been surfing Playas and its surroundings for plus 25 years, but has also traveled quite a bit. He is full of knowledge about the waves and will often take you on surf trips to surrounding waves as well as recommend other hostels owned by his friends throughout Ecuador and Peru.

Magic Seaweed is always wrong about tides so please don't quote them as your source, just ask. If you are shy INOCAR is way more reliable. :)

Location

Guayas, Ecuador

Puerto Engabao which is part of an indigenous ‘comuna’, is still an authentic rural Ecuadorian village yet it is close to the town of Playas, & Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil. Here you will experience the cows, horses, pigs, and donkeys wandering by the house at all hours. It’s a great place for surfing Mon-Fri because there is usually not a crowd and for the more inexperienced surfers there is a fun beach break further south of the point. Weekends may get quite crowded because of the Guayaquil surfers, but your best bet is always to surf at noon since the locals have lunch then.

It's a very safe little community and the neighborhood is comprised of a blend of indigenous people, Ecuadorians living there for a long time, weekenders from Guayaquil, and some foreigners.

Hostal Puerto Engabao is a surf shelter/hostel run by Nadija (Swedish/American) and Daniel (Local/Ecuadorian/American). Daniel has been surfing Engabao/Playas since his teens and is super passionate about sharing this gem with people all over the world. The couple met at the Ocean Beach International Hostel in San Diego where she checked him in 2009. They now have two rambunctious kids and live a fairly simple life filled with surfing, beach days, and good food. Come share their space and enjoy! The hostel, a small surf shelter located in the fishing village of indigenous Puerto Engabao has five rooms, a communal kitchen, BBQ, WIFI, movies, board rentals, surf lessons and hammocks available, but most importantly we are just a few blocks from the point and Daniel is an excellent surf guide and teacher! Thanks for staying with the locals!
