Neighborhood highlights

Welcome to The Ranch at Castro Valley!

The home is rustic and stunning and has recently been renovated. It’s is an older home however, and has some idiosyncrasies common to older ranch homes.
It sits on a private forested ranch of nearly 150 acres. You will feel a 1000 miles away while just being around the corner from everything Central California has to offer.

The Wilderness:
The natural wildlife on the property can be dangerous if you wander into their path, so be aware when outdoors. You’ll see deer, and sometimes a bobcat, fox, snake, skunk, or a wild boar. So keep your distance and don’t hike into the woods. There are driveways, and pathways to walk and enjoy the views from a safe distance. The property has poison oak and poison hemlock. So if you happen to make contact with these always wash thoroughly with soap within about two hours. We provide Extreme poison oak soap in the basic First Aid Kit in the stairwell closet.

Cell phone Coverage/Internet:
The internet is reliable and adequate for most guests. Located in the East Bay Regional Parks area, however, regular cellphone service does not reach this canyon, but you may use your cellphone here by using the feature of “Wi-Fi calling”. Switch this feature ON before coming to the ranch so you can use the internet to make and receive cell calls and texts here. (Note: Wifi Calling must be set up on your phone while you’re still in range of your provider. See Settings, cellular, WiFi calling, ON.

Staying Warm:
The canyon is cooler than in town, so dress warmly in late autumn and winter. Other times of the year remain mild. The home has two electric log fireplaces for ambience, in addition to the ample heating and air conditioning system.

Outdoor heating:
There are propane fire pits and standing outdoor heaters located around the house outdoors and a propane BBQ grill. Propane tanks are provided and will be filled. Other open fires are not permitted.

Entertainment:
Smart TVs have Amazon Fire TV sticks unique to each TV, and have additional HDMI ports to plug in your own devices.

Water:
Our water is pulled from our own well and tests 100% safe with natural minerals. It is filtered and softened. Some prefer the taste of bottled water for drinking and cooking. In this beautiful wooded setting, naturally the water pressure can be low and it may take longer to warm up.

Toilets: The home uses a septic tank system, so it’s best to not use too much toilet paper in the facilities. We do not use bleach products down drains, due to septic.

Other Rules:

No smoking.

Pets are not allowed. We are trying to avoid bringing in poison oak/hemlock oils on fur and paws affecting guests, and also avoid dangerous interactions with wildlife.

Visitors are only allowed with prior consent and we may have additional costs and fees. Discuss the number of people you expect when making reservation.
