My husband and I live in a 1940s bungalow home in the hip and popular Bouldin Creek neighborhood 78704. We rent a large clean high-ceiling, bright and cheery 1BR/1BA studio apartment with private locked entrance via shared screened-in porch. Registered with an operating license through the City of Austin; we absolutely love hosting and are happy to offer suggestions based on your interests. It's been a beautiful journey for us to meet so many wonderful folks that have stayed here from all over the world!
Our location is super convenient; rated by Walk Score as very walkable, good transit and very bikeable.
• One block to Barton Springs Road and El Alma, a fabulous interior Mexican restaurant with outdoor patio overlooking the city and happy hour seven days a week. Walking distance to lots of other great restaurants and clubs too.
• Two blocks to Auditorium Shores and the ten-mile-long Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail where you can visit the famous Stevie Ray Vaughn statue and watch North America's largest urban bat colony fly out from the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset. Boat rental options available nearby for sunset bat tours and dinner cruises.
• Only 1.3 miles (short bus ride/walk) to the Austin Convention Center, especially great if you are coming in for SXSW or conferences.
Just a few blocks or 5 minute car ride to downtown businesses, Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Park (where ACL Music Festival is held), Palmer Events Center, and the Long Center.
• Equally close to the thoroughfares that "keep Austin weird" ... SoLa (S. Lamar Blvd.) with good restaurants and great music venues, SoFi (S. First Street) with eclectic restaurants and funky galleries and shops, and trendsetting SoCo (S. Congress Avenue) where hip shops, excellent restaurants, and the one-and-only Continental Club line the avenue.
About the apartment — eclectic Japanese-inspired decor. Perfect for two people. Curl up on a deluxe and comfortably firm queen box-spring mattress (upgraded for a futon frame) and drift off to sleep wrapped in luxurious high-thread count cotton bed linens and a down-alternative comforter.
And for an added treat, you can relax and rejuvenate in a Panasonic back and leg shiatsu massage recliner — a great start or end to your day. Many of our guests have commented that "they feel like they've gone to heaven!"
Enjoy the great outdoors in comfort in a shared screened-in porch which overlooks a beautiful garden and outdoor seating area. This is also the entrance to your studio-apartment. Fresh-brewed coffee and home-baked breakfast bread or muffins will be waiting for you there!
A welcome basket prepared for you with chocolates, snacks, and fresh fruit, plus a mini-fridge stocked with Texas-brewed Shiner Bock beer, OJ, yogurts, and water instantly take the edge off of a possibly long day of travel.
PLEASE NOTE: Behind an oriental screen in your apartment, my retired husband Jim has a tiny graphic art workspace. If you have no objections, he occasionally would like to be able to work on writing and design projects while you are gone for the day. To insure your privacy, we have devised a "HERE" and "GONE" hangtag system to use as you come and go. Your comfort is our highest concern, so please let us know if you are not comfortable with this arrangement. No worries.

Our guests enter through a shared screened porch and have their own private locked entrance to the studio apartment. We welcome our guests to enjoy the backyard garden and outdoor seating area.
Interaction with Guests
We live in the adjoining house and like to greet our guests if possible and offer a five minute tour and answer questions. We may touch base from time to time to make sure our guests are comfortable and having a good experience. We are also available if our guests would like suggestions about things to do and places to see.
Occasionally we are out-of-town, and our son Brendan oversees the property.
Bouldin Creek is an older neighborhood in Austin, Texas, originally created at the turn of the 20th century. With several historic homes remaining from that era, and countless more from the period of rapid growth in the 1920s and 30s that followed, this neighborhood has an undeniable historic charm. Bouldin Creek is also highly diverse, with a variety of cultures, backgrounds, and architectural styles blending together, resulting in a neighborhood that is uniquely Austin.
Bouldin Creek borders the South Congress area to the east, and the major commercial area centered around South First to the west, with its marked Hispanic influence, forms another backbone of the neighborhood. Given its proximity to these areas and to Downtown Austin, there are certainly areas of Bouldin Creek that have changed as result of gentrification, but the historic nature of the neighborhood and eccentricity of its residents mean it will always be a little bit different. For those who doubt the "weirdness" of South Austin, look no further than David Ansel, a famous resident who left his job in the tech sector to become The Soup Peddler; no one better captures the spirit of the neighborhood.
Bouldin Creek's diverse roots are visible everywhere. In just a quick walk around the neighborhood, one can find the historic Victorian mansion Green Pastures once belonging to famous activist John Henry Faulk, the St. Anne African Methodist Episcopal Church (originally constructed in 1916) on Newton Street, and the beautiful mission-style Holy Name of Mary Orthodox Church at South Third Street. In the South First area, the Mexican bakeries, tattoo shops, art galleries, and unusual shops reflect the diversity of the neighborhood and the resident's desire to support local business. Another integral part of the neighborhood is the Texas School for the Deaf; its enormous campus occupies the entire area bounded by South Congress, Elizabeth Street, Barton Springs Road, and South First. Originally created in the mid-19th century, the school underwent a massive renovation and expansion during the early 1990s.
Today, the spirit of the neighborhood is concentrated in the efforts of the Bouldin Creek Neighborhood Association (BCNA, (URL HIDDEN) which arbitrates development and city initiatives with the neighborhood's residents.
If our guests have a car, we provide a parking pass during their visit. Our street has residential permit parking and there are always spaces available.
Bus service is one block away. Enterprise car rental is four blocks away. Taxis and Ride-share options are readily available. Bicycle rentals are two blocks away.

FROM THE AIRPORT
Car rental is one option for getting from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to downtown Austin. The major car rental companies are conveniently located on the lower level of the airport, just down from the baggage claim area. The companies include Ace, Advantage, Alamo/National, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, and Thrifty.
Taxi: Taxi stands are located just outside the doors of the airport's baggage claim area. The city of Austin regulates taxi rates, and the current meter rate is $2 for the first 1/4 mile, 25 cents for each additional 1/8 mile, and a gas surcharge of 10 cents per mile (currently in effect). Waiting time is $22.50 per hour. Taxi rides that originate at the airport have a $1 surcharge. There's no additional cost for extra passengers, and as many as four passengers can ride for the price of one. As for tipping, it's encouraged for good service. Drivers are independent contractors and they work for themselves.
Public transportation: Capital Metro, the city's bus system, is another option to get from the airport to Austin. Go to the airport's lower level, where buses depart every 40 minutes. Most individual rides are 50 cents, but make sure to bring quarters because drivers can't make change. For an updated list of bus routes serving the airport, check the Capitol Metro website.

You can buy a $2.50 local day pass and $11.25 seven day pass. Buy passes and fare cards and pick up free bus schedules and route maps at the Capital Metro Transit Store (9th and Lavaca), and at most major supermarkets like H-E-B and Randall's.
Taxis, on foot, or by bike: With the recent downtown expansion of the Second Street District, plus Austin's Sixth Street Entertainment District and the Fourth Street Warehouse District, walking safely to restaurants and bars is very easy to do. Austin is a walkable city.
Taxis are a good idea if you're heading from one side of town to the other, say from dinner to drinks. A five-minute cab ride is often worth it to avoid blisters from high heels, and taxis are plentiful most days of the week. Car sharing: Car2Go has a fleet of cars all over the city that you can rent by the minute. Use an app or their website to find a car close to you, press your access card against the card reader on the windshield to unlock it, then get in and go. Current rates are $35 to sign up and 38¢ per minute (max $14/hr or $73/day), plus tax.
Bike rentals: Austin B-Cycle, Austin's bikeshare system. Check out a bike from any of several stations around town, and return it to any other station. (A check-out station is two blocks away.)

Pedicabs, or tricycles attached to a two-seat mini-carriage, also line the city's downtown streets, as do charming horse-drawn carriages; both are practical and even romantic options to get around downtown on the weekends. Catch a pedicab on 6th Street or in the Warehouse District. Licensed by the city of Austin, cyclists work for tips from customers. The pedicabs comfortably fit two people, but it's best to ask the driver if you want to add more.
Other Things to Note
We use all natural cleaning and laundry products. There is an allergy filter in the AC. As much as possible, the apartment has natural or organic fibers, low VOC paint, and products that don't out-gas.
Check-out time is by noon.
A form of ID is required for all guests at check-in. This is a residential neighborhood — no parties. Guns are not permitted. Smoke-free.
If you have any visitors, you must receive prior approval.
Make sure the front gate latch is put in a closed position when you come and go.
Lock the screen door to the screen porch when you come in for the night.
Please let us know if you would like to use the washer and dryer, which is available upon request.

I have been married for 30+ years and have two grown sons and a grandson. My husband and I have lived in the same home for the last 35 years in what is now the hippest, happening neighborhood. I've been the sole proprietor of a jewelry design company for 14 years and my husband is a retired graphic designer from the University of Texas. We love living in the center of Austin and enjoy the music, creativity, culture, cuisine, parks and everything else that Austin offers. We are dog lovers and have two well behaved Australian Shepherds who I've trained to be therapy dogs at the Dell Children's Medical Center. They also enjoy agility training in our spare time. I play tennis as much as I can. But, anything outdoors, I love!
