Our beautifully decorated, fully equipped one bedroom villa is a comfortable & safe place to stay. It is strategically located in the heart of Kuta and in walking distance to the beach, mall, restaurants & places of entertainment.
Why stay in a small hotel room when you can rent a spacious vacation home? By staying at "Red Ape Retreat" you will enjoy the comfort of a "home away from home" while visiting Bali.
Red Ape Retreat is a non-smoking villa located in the quiet, gated Kuta Royal housing complex. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, mall, and restaurants. You can find small convenience stores, authentic Balinese restaurants and the Best Western Hotel (where we share our pool) just a few steps outside the gate.
This cozy first floor villa comes with twice weekly house cleaning service, 24-hr security, and a large, shared swimming pool (with Best Western Resort, Kuta).
We would like our guests to feel comfortable experiencing Balinese/Indonesian living. Thus we equipped the villa with modern amenities, healthy cookware, books that we brought from the USA, and authentic artwork we collected from different islands throughout Indonesia, including Bali, Kalimantan, Java and Timor.
The 800 sq. ft. vacation home has a fully equipped kitchen, microwave oven, refrigerator, washing machine, WiFi internet, satellite TV, flat screen TV, DVD player, books and DVDs. The spacious air-conditioned bedroom has 1 king-size bed with two twin-size pullout beds (i.e., 4-person maximum). The charming little house is decorated in Balinese style and surrounded by a tropical garden with a private side yard that has a Balinese cabana (Bale Bengong), outdoor cooking area, and patio furniture.
Local transportation (such as car and motorbike rental), tours, and professional laundry service can be arranged through the Kuta Royal management office on the premises.
Best Western Resort, Kuta swimming pool, located next door is available to our guests. Drinks, breakfast, lunch and dinner can be purchased at the restaurant by the swimming pool. There is a shallow pool for toddlers as well as a larger deeper pool for adults.
Best Western concierge can also help you arrange local transportation and tours.
Interaction with Guests
Most of the time we live in the USA and interact with guests via email. The management company handles the guest relations and customer service. Occasionally we may see our guests when we visit Bali (twice a year) as we stay in the upstairs unit as our private vacation home.
Red Ape Retreat is located in the Kuta Royal gated community that provides a quiet, friendly, safe and clean neighborhood with lush tropical Balinese gardens throughout the complex.
From the international airport, our guests can take a taxi with a published rate (around US$6-$8) by mentioning Jalan Kubu Anyar, Kuta Royal complex, next to Best Western Resort, Kuta; or we can arrange for the pickup when booking with an addition charge of US$10. Keep in mind, there are two (2) Best Westerns in Kuta. Always let your taxi driver know the Best Western next to Kuta Royal is located on Jalan Kubu Anyar.
You can walk to the beach through a small side street (about 10-15 minutes). As you walk outside the gate, carefully cross the street, pass Pak Man's Ayam Betutu restaurant (on the right side) and continue walking down to the end of the road, turn left to the end of the road, then turn right all the way to Jalan Kartika Plaza (the main street parallel to the beach). If you want to access the beach, through the Discovery Mall, turn right on Jalan Kartika Plaza where lots of restaurants, shops and entertainment, including the Waterboom Park entrance can be found.
To get around Kuta by taxi, our preference is Blue Bird. It is available by calling: (phone number hidden) or via the management office during office hours.
You can also walk to Best Western Resort (next door) to arrange daily local transportation (car and driver rental) and tours. Car including a driver will cost about US$40/8 hrs. Bike rental is available via Kuta Royal management office or the security guard on duty.
Other Things to Note
Please provide copies of passports for everyone who is staying at the Red Ape Retreat to the management office during check-in. The keys will be provided to you in exchange for the copies of all guest's passports and the signed rental agreement (that will be emailed to you upon booking the villa).
Absolutely no smoking inside the villa.
Please leave the villa in good condition upon departure. This will prevent any excess cleaning charges that might be incurred after our management company inspect the villa following your departure.
During our stay at the Red Ape Retreat, we had the pleasure of meeting our wonderful hosts- Gary and his wife, Inggriani. Although we stayed there for a relatively short period of time, I was pleasantly surprised by how well my family got along with Gary and Inggriani. They helped us get a driver, gave us tips on things to do and even went out of their way to ensure we had a comfortable stay. I think my family vacation wouldn't have been the same had we not had a chance to meet our wonderful hosts!
My mother really appreciated the fact that every nook and corner in the house had Inggriani's personal touch. It is exactly as in the pictures and has a wonderful mix of traditional Balinese and contemporary architecture. Everything in the apartment is labelled and easy to find. Additionally, it is very close to the airport and Kuta beach. Although the house is situated in a quiet area, in a couple of minutes you can walk out onto the main street which is strewn with local stores and places to eat.
I would definitely recommend this place. And I hope that most guests get to meet Gary and hear about his wonderful work related to orangutans and the environment.
Gary and his wife were so incredibly helpful during our stay. They just happened to be in town during that time, and they recommended a great spa, helped us get a taxi, had a driver meet us at the airport, and made the stay at the Red Ape comfortable and easy. We would love to go back. It was also nice to chat with them for a while and just get a sense of the area and the country.
Red ape retreat is a very practical home, everything is labeled, everything in place and it works. Nice layout, lots of books and a supernice bedroom. The neighborhood is ok, about 15 walk to kuta beach and that area, lots of local food places around and the pool at best western next door is very nice. For us traveling with a small baby kuta itself turned out to be too hot but that is of course nothing red ape can be blamed for :-)
The villa is really nice, well designed and very convenient to live in, the secured area is a must as it is not only safe but also quite with almost no trafic.
Everything was as described on the website. The villa was really clean, check in and out super easy. Through Gary was not physically present, he took care of our arrival by email and a comprehensive notice was available in the villa.
It's worth mentionning that the road to the beach is a little busy. If you have small kids, you shoud rather take a taxi than going by foot.
Quiet gated community, and perfect for what we wanted. Gary's vacation home was amazing -- with travel books, adapters for international travelers (oversight on our part for not bringing one), and a very comprehensive book about what the home provides. Everything about the home was perfect! Would definitely love to come back!
Overall wonderful experience! Gary was extremely professional, responsible, and helpful from the start. Any questions and he'll answer them within a few hours. The place itself is great - it's cozy, beautiful, and conveniently close to airport and other attractions. I would highly recommend booking here, and would do so again when I come back.
My wife and two children stayed at the villa. That is located in a guarded nabourhood. We really enjoyed the villa it had all the things we needed. It's clean and quiet with a huge comfy bed. It's close to kuta beach and a short walk to the mall and lots of resterants. We loved it
That is a picture of me with my adopted, free-ranging orangutan daughter, Princess. She was an ex-captive, orphan orangutan who was brought to Camp Leakey, Tanjung Puting (Central Kalimantan, Indonesia) to be rehabilitated and released to live in the wild. I taught Princess sign language in the late 1970s as part of my doctoral dissertation project, which was the first and only such project where great apes were taught sign language in their natural habitat and returned to the wild. Princess’s ability to sign can be seen in various documentaries (such as BBC Nature’s “Kusasi: from Orphan to King”) and on Youtube (by searching for "Princess orangutan").
My initial two years of living in the forests of Borneo and my special connection to Princess promoted my commitment to saving wild orangutans. With my Indonesian wife, Inggriani, in 2004, we co-founded the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF). The mission of OURF is saving wild orangutans through education programs that we sponsor and co-sponsor. Our goal is to enroll and inspire local Indonesians to care about and take action in saving the wild orangutan and their natural habitat, the rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra. You can learn more about OURF by Googling "orangutanrepublik" on the web.
I am also passionate about Bali, durian, and diving. It is what keeps me coming back to this beautiful country. It was always in my dream to retire in Bali where I could be close to orangutans and exploring Indonesia’s magnificent archipelago with its abundant and diverse fauna and flora. To promote and in honor of Asia’s only great ape, the orangutan, we named our second home, Red Ape Retreat and made it available for others to rent. We provide a collection of books on orangutans at the villa where our guests can learn more about this majestic species. A portion of the rent will help support the education programs we sponsor and administer. Our goal is to provide our guests with the comfort of a "home away from home" while visiting Bali. We hope you will come as our guest, enjoy Bali living, learn about orangutans, and leave as one of our friends.
