Had the most amazing time. The villa was the perfect get away from everything at the end of the day. The villa is beautiful and comfortable. Bugs were not an issue in the home Gary and Mrs. Yanti took every precaution you can imagine to ensure bugs steer clear of the home. The location is the perfect distance from most of the big resorts and just close enough to the beach to walk to if you don't want to plan a specific trip that day. Thank you Gary and Mrs. Yanti for constantly being available at all times during our trip to answer any questions and letting us stay in your beautiful home. It really made our trip amazing.

Gary's villa is very clean and well-decorated. Lots of arts and pics of apes (Gary's passion). The bed is wide and comfortable. You have all the necessary equipment in the kitchen (even a blender to make your favourite smoothie!). You should know that wi-fi in the villa is pretty weak, especially if you are in the next room from where the router is. Unfortunately, the host was away from Bali and could not help himself. But he called his friend and the latter did his best to fix it. It is still weak but you can use it in the bedroom. The air con is only in the bedroom, too. So if you plan to work on your laptop or watch TV, you will have to stay in bed all day (not a good choice for me). The only table is in the dining-room but there you have only fans and weak internet. If you plan to spend most of your time on the beach, it is not a problem at all. The area is quite, which is good, but about 10-15 minutes from the main coffee shops and restaurants. If you don't ride a scooter, you will have to walk or call go-jek. In general the villa is really good and I enjoyed my stay there. Gary did his best to help with advice via email. I recommend the villa if you don't have a digital business and don't depend on internet like me.

Response from Gary:
Thank you Igor for your kind review and suggestion. Since Igor's visit, we have added a larger antenna and a WiFi repeater to boost the signal. Now our guests can get a good WiFi signal on the patio and side yards. Please note that on Bali, wireless internet fluctuates in bandwidth and signal strength during times of heavy usage. Even hotels with industrial grade internet experience fluctuations in signal quality and speed. The internet at this vacation home is not intended for visitors who are operating a digital business while at the villa. So if you are not streaming high speed data that demands consistency in speed and strength, the wireless internet will serve our guests well.

We are very happy we chose Gary's Villa for our first trip to Bali, it made our holiday just perfect! The villa is in a villa complex with 24h security service and nice staffs for cleaning. It is located in Kuta in a quite area but you can easily walk to the main tourist area of Kuta. There are 3-4 small supermarkets just in front of the entrance of the villa complex. The villa itself is very comfortable with everything we need, decorated with wonderful Balinese style. Highly recommended!!

I'm Chinese from Shanghai, stayed in the villa with my wife for 3 nights. It's really wonderful during our stay though it's not very long time. The house and the garden were well decorated and easy for live. We like the bathroom and the kitchen very much, comfortable and clean. The place is also very good, easy to go to kuta beach, shopping center in the downtown. Hope the next time in Bali and stay in Gary's villa again.

We rented the space for a full month. It will forever be some of the best memories for me and my family. Everything is neat and tidy in and around the house. Everything in Kuta is easily accesible from the Villa. There are some good cafes and salons right by the villa. The online support and house services during our stay was superb. I would go back to The Red Ape Retreat anyday.

A friend and I stayed in Gary's beautiful villa for 6 nights during our stay in Kuta. It was clean, comfortable and a true oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Kuta. The pool next door at the Best Western is very nice and often empty. With your purchase of a pool pass you receive a cold drink and fries, which is a nice bonus. Although we didn't love Kuta as much as other parts of Bali getting around via hire car/taxi to see other parts of Bali is quite easy and cheap. For example our car to the airport was about $3, and it's roughly $7 to get to Seminyak for the day or about $20 to go to Ubud (we used the app Grab, it's very similar to Uber, but just be conscious of where you use it as its not allowed in all areas of Bali). Gary's villa is well equiped. The washing machine, air conditioning, Internet and TV were all great bonuses and worked well. There's an awesome DVD and book library, both of which were used and enjoyed when we needed some down time. It's about a 10 minute walk to get into the heart of Kuta, although the (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps fastest route takes you down some very busy alleyways on which we didn't always feel 100% secure, I would recommend taking a slightly longer route if going on foot. The staff at the villa compound were lovely and very helpful, if ever we needed anything they were always able to respond within minutes. Overall I would definitely recommend Red Ape Retreat, it's a beautiful villa and really made us feel at home in Bali!

As former hosts ourselves, imagine our delight to find ourselves on the receiving end of Gary's proactive hosting, starting with thorough and helpful practical guidance on everything from directions to local smartphone sim card details. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Gary and his wife, as their visit (in the apartment on the top floor) coincides with ours. They are naturally hospitable and welcoming, and a great source of local knowledge and recommendations. The house itself was just as we envisaged, and perfect for the needs of my small family of two adults and one child. Hosts are rightly proud of recent refurb of bathroom and other areas of the villa. You'll find everything you need here for cooking, outdoor dining, relaxing and sleeping in the cool of an air conditioned bedroom. Plenty of storage. Proximity to the hotel next door was handy for us for good value breakfast and swim (the pool is lovely) and the little spa beside the pool does great massages and treatments. There are little grocery stores nearby, too, for essential cold drinks, snacks and supplies. You'll need mossie repellant everywhere in Bali and we probably didn't make as much use of the pretty outside space as we would have liked because we were cautious. Wifi is fast and reliable, for checking messages etc (it's not unlimited) and incredibly useful. We used the Blue Bird Taxi app to call taxis when we needed, as we found the dark blue Bali Taxis often overcharge and the blue bird ones are by meter. They wait for you at the entrance to the complex, which most drivers were familiar with. You'll love Igrianni's lovely touches to decor and practicalities - toiletries, fresh towels, flowers and plenty of guide books. We felt like we had an authentic experience rather than an overpriced noisy Kuta hotel. One to remember!

Response from Gary:
While we are not usually able to personally host in Bali, it was wonderful to be there when Clare, Gary and Gregory (their son), spent time at the Red Ape Retreat. They were delightful guests, and its always nice being able to share experiences and tips when I have a chance. We hope they will return in the near future to explore more of Bali.

That is a picture of me with my adopted, free-ranging orangutan daughter, Princess. She was an ex-captive, orphan orangutan who was brought to Camp Leakey, Tanjung Puting (Central Kalimantan, Indonesia) to be rehabilitated and released to live in the wild. I taught Princess sign language in the late 1970s as part of my doctoral dissertation project, which was the first and only such project where great apes were taught sign language in their natural habitat and returned to the wild. Princess’s ability to sign can be seen in various documentaries (such as BBC Nature’s “Kusasi: from Orphan to King”) and on Youtube (by searching for "Princess orangutan").

My initial two years of living in the forests of Borneo and my special connection to Princess promoted my commitment to saving wild orangutans. With my Indonesian wife, Inggriani, in 2004, we co-founded the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF). The mission of OURF is saving wild orangutans through education programs that we sponsor and co-sponsor. Our goal is to enroll and inspire local Indonesians to care about and take action in saving the wild orangutan and their natural habitat, the rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra. You can learn more about OURF by Googling "orangutanrepublik" on the web.

I am also passionate about Bali, durian, and diving. It is what keeps me coming back to this beautiful country. It was always in my dream to retire in Bali where I could be close to orangutans and exploring Indonesia’s magnificent archipelago with its abundant and diverse fauna and flora. To promote and in honor of Asia’s only great ape, the orangutan, we named our second home, Red Ape Retreat and made it available for others to rent. We provide a collection of books on orangutans at the villa where our guests can learn more about this majestic species. A portion of the rent will help support the education programs we sponsor and administer. Our goal is to provide our guests with the comfort of a "home away from home" while visiting Bali. We hope you will come as our guest, enjoy Bali living, learn about orangutans, and leave as one of our friends.
